About BlackBerry Protect

About BlackBerry Protect
BlackBerry® Protect provides a convenient way to wirelessly back up and restore BlackBerry device data as well as features to help you find your device and help protect your device's data if your device is ever lost or stolen.
You can use BlackBerry Protect to back up contacts, calendars, memos, tasks, text messages, and browser bookmarks. You can set BlackBerry Protect to back up your data regularly or only when certain types of network connections are available. You can also choose to back up your data manually.
BlackBerry Protect can restore data to the same device (for example, when you want to recover data that you have deleted) or to a different device (for example, when you need to replace a lost device with a new one).
If your device is lost, you can use the BlackBerry Protect web site to help you find your device by viewing its current location, making it ring, or displaying a custom message on the device Home screen. If your device is stolen, you can also remotely lock your device, change your device password, or delete all data from your device.
You can manage up to five BlackBerry devices from your BlackBerry Protect account. You cannot use BlackBerry Protect on a device that is configured to work with the BlackBerry® Enterprise Server, therefore there are no IT policies for BlackBerry Protect.

Backing up device data

Backing up device data

About backing up data automatically

You can use BlackBerry® Protect to automatically back up your data daily, weekly, or monthly. When you turn on automatic backups, BlackBerry Protect backs up your data at the specified frequency when your BlackBerry device is connected to the wireless network and not in use. If your device is turned off or not connected to the wireless network when a backup is due, BlackBerry Protect backs up your data the next time that your device is turned on and connected.
While BlackBerry Protect is backing up your data, you can use your device as you normally would. BlackBerry Protect pauses the backup process when you use your device and automatically finishes backing up your data when you are done.

Backup options

Backing up device data
Additional data charges might apply when you use this feature. For information, contact your wireless service provider.
Automatically Back Up
Set whether BlackBerry® Protect backs up your data based on a regular schedule. If you select this option, BlackBerry Protect backs up your data in the background only when you are not using your BlackBerrydevice. If a scheduled backup cannot be completed (for example, if your device is not connected to the wireless network at the scheduled backup time), BlackBerry Protect tries again until the backup succeeds. If you do not select this option, you can still back up your data manually.
Backup Frequency
Set how often you want BlackBerry Protect to automatically back up your data.
Only Back Up over Wi-Fi
Set whether you want BlackBerry Protect to back up your data only when your device is connected to a Wi-Fi® network. You can use this option to reduce data usage on your wireless service plan, but BlackBerry Protect might not be able to back up your data as frequently. If you select this option and a Wi-Fi network is not available when a scheduled backup time arrives, BlackBerry Protect backs up your data the next time that your device connects to a Wi-Fi network. If you do not select this option, BlackBerry Protect still backs up your data over a Wi-Fi network when one is available, but if a Wi-Fi network is not available, BlackBerry Protect backs up your data over the wireless network.
Allow Backup When Roaming
Set whether you want BlackBerry Protect to back up your data automatically when your device is outside your wireless service provider's coverage area. You can turn off this option to reduce roaming charges from your wireless service provider. If you turn off this option and your device is roaming when a scheduled backup time arrives, BlackBerry Protect backs up your data the next time that your device is within your wireless service provider's coverage area or the next time that your device connects to a Wi-Fi network.

Tracking your device's location

Tracking your device's location

About location tracking

When location tracking is turned on in the BlackBerry® Protect application on your BlackBerry device, you can use the BlackBerry Protect web site to view your device's approximate location on a map. This feature can help you find your device if it is ever lost.
Your device sends its location only when you request it through the BlackBerry Protect web site or when the battery power level is low; your device does not report its location on a regular basis. However, if you do not want your device to be able to send its location to the BlackBerry Protect web site, you can turn off location tracking in the BlackBerry Protect application on your device, but then you will not be able to view your device's location if it is lost.
If location tracking is turned on and you share your BlackBerry Protect account with another person, that person can view your device's location at any time through the BlackBerry Protect web site.
