When using your telephone equipment, basic safety precautions should always be followed to reduce the risk of fire, electric shock and injury to persons, including the following:

1.Read and understand all instructions.

2.Follow all warnings and instructions marked on the product.

3.Unplug this product from the wall outlet before cleaning. Do not use liquid cleaners or aerosol cleaners. Use a damp cloth for cleaning.

INFORMATION FOR GENERAL TELEPHONES

1.This equipment complies with Part 68 of the FCC rules. On the bottom of this equipment is a label that contains, among other information, the FCC registration number and ringer equivalence number (REN) for this equipment. If requested, this information must be provided to the telephone company.

2.The applicable registration jack (connector) USOC-RJ11C is used for this equipment.

3.This equipment is designed to be connected to the telephone network or premises wiring using a compatible modular jack which is Part 68 compliant.

The FCC compliant telephone cord and modular plug is provided with this equipment.

4.The REN is used to determine the quantity of devices which may be connected to the telephone line. Excessive RENs on the telephone line may result in the devices not ringing in response to an incoming call. In most, but not all areas, the sum of the RENs. should not exceed five (5.0). To be certain of

the number of devices that may be connected to a line, as determined by the total RENs. contact the local telephone company.

Cietting started

Read this first

Before you use your phone, you must set it up. Here’s a quick way to set up your phone: Step 1,2 and 3.

Step 1 (page 7)

First, unpack the phone and the supplied accessories.

Step 2 (page 8 to 10)

Next, you need to do three things to set up the base unit, including finding the best location for the base unit.

About the cordless telephone

The first time you charge the battery pack, a random security code is automatically assigned between the base unit and the handset. Only a handset which has this unique security code can make calls through the base unit. This system prevents the possibility of other cordless telephone handsets making calls through your base unit. You can also reset the security code (see page 35).

Setting up the base unit

Do the following steps:

Caution: The cordless telephone operates at a frequency that may cause interference to nearby TVs and VCRs; the base unit should not be placed near or on top of a TV or VCR; and, if interference is experienced, moving the cordless telephone farther away from the TV or VCR will often reduce or eliminate the interference.

Notes

Use only the supplied AC-T42 AC power adaptor. Do not use any other AC power adaptor.

Connect the AC power adaptor to a continuous power supply.

Place the base unit close to the AC outlet so that you can unplug the AC power adaptor easily.

Tips

If your telephone outlet isn't modular, contact your telephone service company for assistance.

If you have two phone lines on a single jack with the first. phone line connected to center pair of w ires, and need to connect the second phone line (outer pair of wires), contact your telephone company for rew iring.

Preparing the battery pack for the handset

Insert the battery pack into the handset, then place the handset on the base unit.

1 Slide open the battery compartment lid of the handset.

Connect the cord of the battery pack correctly.

Insert the battery pack into the battery compartment.

Replace the battery compartment lid.

Charge the battery pack

Place the handset on the base unit.

The CHARGE lamp lights up. It takes about 12 hours to charge the battery pack.

Battery duration

A fully charged battery pack lasts for about:

6 hours when you use the handset continuously.

14 days when the handset is in standby mode.

You can save the handset battery power by setting the RING ON/ ВАТТ SAVE switch to ВАТТ SAVE. The handset won't ring (see page 17).

Notes

The battery pack will gradually discharge over a long period of time, even if iit>i in use.

The CHARGE lamp of the base unit is always lighted when the handsel is placed on the base unit, even if the battery pack has been fully charged.

As long as the handset is placed on the base unit after each call, the battery pack will be recharged continuously.

If the handset battery becomes weak

You will hear a beep every three seconds during the conversation.

The call will be disconnected in one minute.

When to purchase a new battery pack

If the battery lasts only a few minutes even after 12 hours of charging, the usable life of the battery has expired and needs replacement.

Contact your local Sony authorized dealer or .service center, and ask for Sony BP-T16 rechargeable battery pack.

Note

If the handsel battery is completely discharged, the digital security code will be erased

 

and all programmed numbers will be lost from memory.

1 Press (TALK) and wait until the TALK/BATT LOW lamp lights up. You then hear a dial tone. If you hear beeps, move closer to the base unit.

alert you that the number can't be dialed.

To erase the last phone number dialed

While the telephone isn't in use. press (R E D IA L /P A U S E ) twice.

The number will be erased from the memory, and you’ll hear a long confirmation beep.

Note

Make sure that the RING O.N/B.ATT SA'VE switch is set to RING ON for this

operation.

Tip

If you can hear the base unit ring on incoming calls, you can make the handset not ring by setting the RING ON/BATT SAVE switch to ВАТТ SAVE. You can still make or receive calls by pressing (TALK).

Speed dialing

You can dial with a touch of a few keys by storing phone number on

a dialing key.

Storing phone numbers

The TALK/BATT LOW lamp flashes.

2 Press one of the dialing keys (® to ®) for the phone number to be stored.

3 Enter the phone number you want to store.

You can enter up to 16 digits, including a tone and a pause, each of which is counted as one dicit.

You hear a long confirmation beep. The TALK/BATT LOW lamp goes off and the number is stored.

Before entering a phone number in Step 3 on the previous page, do as follows:

1 Enter the outside line access digit (e.g. 9).

iZ Press ( REDIAL7PAUSE ) to enter a pause.

To change a stored number

Store a new number, as described on the previous page.

Making calls with speed dialing

1 Press (TALK) and wait until the TALK/BATT LOW lamp lights up.

2 Press C SPEED DIAL/PGfyQ.

3 Enter the desired speed dialing number ((0) to (D).

The phone number stored in the speed dialing number will be dialed.

Paging

You can page the handset from the base unit.

Press ( PAGE).

The paging signal is heard from the handset.

When you press (PAGE) for a moment, the paging signal sounds for one second. Or the paging signal sounds continuously as long as you keep pressing C PAGF).

Notes

It' a call comes in during paging, paging is canceled.

You cannoi page when the handsel is engaged in conversation.

It’ the RING ON/BATT SAVE switch on the handsel is set to ВАТТ SAVE, the paging signal doesn’t ring.

Setting up the answering machine

As you proceed the operation, you will hear the operation guidance.

Setting the time and the day of the week

1 Press (REMOTE).

The REMOTE lamp lights up. The day of the week, time and new message number are announced.

2 Press ®.

3 Set the day of the week using the dialing keys. Sunday - 03, Monday - (D,

Tuesday - (3), Wednesday - ®,

Thursday - (5), Friday - d),

Saturday - CZ)

4 Set the hour using the dialing keys ((0)QI)

Make sure that the RING ON/BATT SAVE switch is set to RING ON.

If two minutes have passed during operation, the setting is canceled. Try again from the beginning.

During the power interruption, the clock stops. So if this happens, reset the lime.

Recording the greeting

You can record your own greeting for the “normal” and

“annoucement only” mode.

1 Press CREMOTE).

The REMOTE lamp lights up.

2 Press GREETING/®.

You will hear an operation guidance from the handset.

3 Speak into the handset.

You can record up to one minute.

4 To stop recording, press STOP/®.

A long confirmation beep sounds, and your greeting will be played back.

Notes

Make sure thal ihe RING ON/BATT SAVH switch is set to RING ON.

If the greeting is shorter than 2 seconds, five short error beeps sound and the greeting is not recorded.

This answering machine has also prerecorded greeting. You can use following greeting. ifyt)u don't record your ow n greeting.

To change the greeting

Do in the same way as described on the previous page. The new greeting replaces the old one, if you record the greeting shorter than 2 seconds, five short error beeps sound and switch to the prerecorded greeting aulomalically.

Selecting the ring time (on the base unit only)

You can select the number of rings before the phone answers to take a message.

There are three modes. ?>, 5, and TS (Toll saver).

1 Press (RING SET ) twice.

2 Press or (2D select “?i times”, "5 times", or "Toll saver”.

To answei' after 3 rings, .select "3 times". To answer after 5 rings, select ‘‘.3 times". Select "Toll saver” to answer after 3 times when there is a new message and after 5 times when there is no new message.

Press (RING SET).

You will hear a long confirmation beep.

Selecting the answering mode

You can set the answering machine to record incoming messages (Normal mode), or just to make an announcement without recording messages (Announcement only mode).

In the normal mode, you also have the option of having a beep to tell you if you have received any new incoming messages.

Turning on the answering machine

Notes

If the remaUiiiig recording time becomes less than 4 minutes and 30 seconds, the remaining recording time is announced.

If 4 minutes have passed while recording the incoming message, the line is d isconnected automatical I y.

If the message is shorter than 2 seconds, the message is not recorded.

Tip

The answering machine will automatically answer a call alter 10 rings even if the answering function is off.

The answering function will remain on for all subsequent calls.

To turn off the answering machine

Pre,s.s (ANSWER ).

The answering machine is turned off and the message counter goes

off.

Tip

You can turn the answering machine on/off using the handset, too (see page 31).

Listening to the messages

If there are new messages, the number of new messages flash. You will hear beeps in the AUDIBLE ON mode.

To play back the messages

Press (PLAY/STOP). The unit plays back from the first new messaue.

(SKIP/QUICK)

Note

If a call comes in during (he playback, the playback stops.

Tip

You can also listen to the message by using the handset (see page 31)

To play back the message from a touch-tone phone, see page 33.

To skip the current message

Press ( SKIP/QUICK ) during playback.

To repeat the current message

Press ( REPEAT/SLOW ) during playback.

If \ ou press the button again within two seconds after the current message has started, you go to the previous message.

To stop playback

Press ( PLAY/STOP ).

To play back quickly

Keep pressing (SKIP/QUICK) during playback.

Release (SKIP/QUICK) to return to normal playback.

To play back slowly_______________

Keep pressing ( REPEAT/SLQW ) during playback.

Release CREPEAT/SLOW ) to return to normal playback.
