Getting Started

Welcome to Mac OS X Server version 10.2. This guide will help you install the software and
get your server up and running quickly.

Setup Overview

If you’re new to servers, you may want to review the setup example in Chapter 2 before you

begin.

If you are currently using an older version of Mac OS X Server, AppleShare IP, or Macintosh

Manager, and you want to retain your current server configuration, review

Mac OS X Server.

You’ll find a copy of this document at www.apple.com/macosx/server/

migration/

If you are setting up a remote server or a server with no display attached (a “headless” server

such as Xserve), set up an administrator computer from which you can set up the server. See
“Setting Up an Administrator Computer” on page 11.

Setting Up Your Server

Follow the instructions in this chapter to install the Mac OS X Server software, configure your
server using the setup assistants, and get basic services up and running.

Server System Requirements

You can install Mac OS X Server on any of these computers:

m

Xserve

m

Macintosh Server G4

m

Power Mac G4

m

Macintosh Server G3

m

Power Macintosh G3

iMac

eMac

The server must have

m

at least 128 megabytes (MB) of random access memory (RAM)

m

at least 4 gigabytes (GB) of unused disk space

A display and keyboard are optional. You can set up a server that has no display using an
administrator computer. See “Remote Installation” on page 8.

Overview of Installation and Setup Options

The Mac OS X Server software installer and setup assistants allow several approaches to
setting up a server. The approach you follow can depend on several factors.

If the server has a display and keyboard attached, you can install and set up locally. See
“Local Installation” on page 8 and “Local Setup” on page 10.

If the server has no display or keyboard, you can use an administrator computer to install
and set up the server remotely. You can also install remotely on servers with displays. See
“Remote Installation” on page 8 and “Remote Setup” on page 10.

If you are deploying servers to different locations, you can install the software and finish
the first part of the setup with the servers in one convenient location, and then move
them to their permanent locations and finish the setup process remotely. See “Moving
the Server After Installing the Software” on page 11.

Installing the Server Software

You can install Mac OS X Server locally (directly on the computer you are using) or remotely
on a computer that has no display or is in another location.

Important

Be sure to review the Read Me document on the Mac OS X Server Installation
CD for important updates to the information in this guide and special recommendations for
owners of certain hardware and software configurations.

Local Installation

Follow these instructions to install Mac OS X Server directly on a computer with a display and
a keyboard.

To install Mac OS X Server locally:

Turn on the computer and insert the Mac OS X Server Installation CD.

Restart the computer from the CD (hold down the C key on the keyboard while you restart
the computer).

Follow the onscreen instructions to install the software.

When the server restarts, the Server Assistant opens so you can finish basic setup. See “Using
the Setup Assistants” on page 9.

Remote Installation

To install Mac OS X Server on a computer that has no display attached, or any time you want
to install without working at the target computer, use an administrator computer to install
the software remotely. If you haven’t set up an administrator computer, see “Setting Up an
Administrator Computer” on page 11.

Important

During remote installation, the administrator computer and the server must be
connected to the same IP subnet. You can connect a portable administrator computer to the
server’s subnet during installation, or install the software over the administrator computer’s
subnet, and then move the server to its permanent network location to finish setting it up.
