•Energize and de-energize system
hydraulics (hydraulic power unit, hydraulic
service manifold, or both)
•Monitor sensor signals
•Perform auto offset on selected signals
•Manually control the actuator
•Run/Stop/Hold the test program

About Exclusive Control
You can control hydraulic pressure and actuator movement with the interface of
the Station Manager application. This is referred to as station control.
Some systems are equipped with a portable device (such as the handset) that has
an interface that also allows you to perform station control.
For safety reasons, the system limits station control to only one interface at a
time. That interface is said to have “exclusive control.”
You assign exclusive control to one interface or the other, giving that interface
exclusive control of hydraulics and actuator movement, while disabling those
functions in the other interface.
Exclusive control
functions
The interface that has exclusive control controls the following functions:
•Manual Command (for positioning the actuator)
•Interlock Reset/Override
•Program Run, Stop, and Hold
•Hydraulics Off
NoteThe Hydraulics Off and Program Stop functions are always functional,
regardless of which interface has exclusive control.

MTS Model 494.05 Handset
About Exclusive Control and the Handset
Access Level control set
to Operator. By default,
this is the level required
to assign exclusive
control to the handset.
Exclusive Control selector
for the Handset interface
enabled. When the handset
has exclusive control, an
asterisk (*) is displayed
before the display page
code. In this example, the
display page is Manual
Command, shown as “*MC.”
Exclusive Control selector
for the Station Manager
application interface is
disabled when the handset is
assigned exclusive control.
It is also disabled when you
open Station Manager
application, as neither the
handset nor the PC interface
is assigned exclusive control
by default.
The Model 494.05 Handset is a portable device that provides station control. It is
typically used to facilitate specimen installation, and because it is mobile, it is
more convenient to use in close proximity to the specimen than the PC interface.
NoteWhen you open a station that includes a handset, neither the handset
nor the Station Manager application has exclusive control.
Handset Setup Procedures
Using exclusive control
at the Operator access
level
Your access to Station Manager application controls is determined by your access
level, which is password protected. Access levels include Operator, Tuning,
Calibration, and Configuration.
By default, you can assign exclusive control to the handset only when the access
level is set to Operator. This prevents anyone from making tuning or calibration
adjustments while the handset has exclusive control because those adjustments
require Tuning and Calibration access levels.
MTS Model 494.05 Handset
13
Handset Setup Procedures
By default, this control is
disabled.
To enable this control, you
must attain the
Configuration access level
in the Station Manager
application.
Best practice for this control:
-Enable (check) this control only to facilitate tuning and calibration.
-Disable (click to clear) this control for normal operation.
This is important because it prevents anyone from changing tuning and
calibration settings at the PC while the operator is using the handset to move the
actuator. While you do not use tuning and calibration controls to move the
actuator directly, they do affect actuator response.
The “Allow exclusive control at any level” Control
A control on the Handset Options page of the Station Options window (Station
Manager > Tools > Station Options > Handset) allows you to assign exclusive
control to the handset at any Station Manager application access level.
14
MTS Model 494.05 Handset
Handset Setup Procedures
WARNING
CAUTION
Allowing exclusive control of the handset at any access level allows tuning
and calibration adjustments to be made while the handset has exclusive
control. This may result in unexpected system response.
Unexpected system response may cause injury and damage equipment.
Ensure that all personnel are properly trained and are aware of the state of the
“Allow exclusive control at any access level” control when using the equipment.
Using this control to
facilitate tuning and
calibration
Hazard considerations
when enabling this
control
This control is provided to facilitate tuning and calibration. While performing
these operations, it is convenient to have access to the Station Manager
application tuning and calibration controls at the PC interface while the Handset
has exclusive control. This allows you to quickly iterate between control
adjustments and position adjustments of the actuator, specimen, and fixturing.
When the “Allow exclusive control at any level” control is enabled, tuning
and calibration adjustments may be made at the PC interface while the
handset has exclusive control. This may result in unexpected system
response.
Unexpected system response may cause injury and damage equipment.
This control is disabled by default. MTS recommends that you do not enable this
control for normal use, and that you disable (click to clear the checkbox) when
tuning and calibration are complete.
When this control is enabled, an operator at the PC interface may make changes
to the tuning and calibration controls while another operator is using the handset.
This means the PC operator can make adjustments that affect the response rate of
the actuator while the Handset operator is using the handset to position the
actuator. This is potentially unsafe.
Requirements to enable
MTS Model 494.05 Handset
and disable this control
For example, if the PC operator makes a large adjustment to the P Gain control
while the handset operator is positioning the actuator, the actuator may instantly
and forcefully clamp shut.
To enable this control, you must attain the Configuration access level.
To disable this control, you may be at any access level.
15
Handset Setup Procedures
Once this control is disabled, you must attain the Configuration access level to
re-enable it.
Default access level
when this control is not
enabled
If the “Allow exclusive control at any access level” control is not enabled, and
you assign exclusive control to the handset, the access level automatically
changes to Operator.
How to Assign Exclusive Control to a Handset
1. If necessary, assign a handset to the station.
On the Tools menu, click Station Options and use the Handset Options tab
to select a handset.
NoteIf the handset is assigned to another station, a “Could not connect to...”
error message appears. In this case, you must use the Station Options
window in the other station to change the handset assignment of that
station to None.
2. In the Station Manager window, clear the Exclusive Control check box.
3. On the handset, press (Exclusive Control).
•An asterisk (*) appears on the handset display to indicate that the
handset has exclusive control.
•The Exclusive Control check box in the Station Manager window is
unavailable (dimmed).

WARNING
Allowing exclusive control at any access level can result in unexpected
actuator movement.
Unexpected actuator behavior can cause equipment damage, serious injury,
or both.
Ensure that all personnel involved in test design, operation, tuning, and calibration
are properly trained. Be aware of the current user access level and exclusive
control assignment at all times, especially when working in close proximity to an
actuator.
•If “Allow exclusive control at any access level” is not checked in the
Handset Options tab, and access level is not already operator, the
access level is switched to operator.
NoteA message is written to the message log each time exclusive control is
switched to the handset or the Station Manager application.
How to Return Exclusive Control to the Station Manager Application
1. On the handset, press (Exclusive Control).
•The asterisk (*) on the handset display is removed to indicate that the
handset does not have exclusive control.
•The Exclusive Control check box in the Station Manager window is
available.
2. In the Station Manager window, select the Exclusive Control check box.
The Station Manager application now has exclusive control of the system.
