Minimizing your printer's environm ental impact We are committed to protecting the environme nt and are continually improving our print ers to reduce their
environ mental imp act. By sel ecting ce rtain pr inter setti ngs or task s, you may be a ble to reduc e your print er's
environmental impact even fu rther.
Conserving ener gy
• Eco-Mode . This fe ature sets the scre en brig htness to low and sets the print er to change to Power Saver mode
after the print er is left idle for 10 minu tes. Eco-Mod e is enabled by default in y our printer.
• Selec t the lowes t Power S aver tim eout. The Po wer Saver feature puts the printer in a minimum-pow er standby
mode aft er the printer has been idl e for a set a mount of time (th e Powe r Save r timeou t).
• Share your printer. Wireles s/networ k printers allo w you to share a sin gle print er among multip le computer s,
thus conserving en ergy and other res ources.
Conserving pa per
• Print more tha n one page image o n one side o f the paper. Th e “Pages per s heet” feature al lows you to pr int
multiple pag es on one sheet. Y ou can print u p to 8 page i mages on one side of a shee t of paper.
• Print on both sides of the paper. Duplexing lets you print o n both si des of the pape r manual ly or a utomatica lly
(depending on your printer model) .
• Preview p rint jobs before prin ting. Use t he preview f eatures fo und in the Print Pr eview dialog or the prin ter
display (depending on your printer model).
• Scan and sav e. To avoid p rinting mul tiple copies , you can scan documents or photogra phs and sav e them to a
computer program, appl ication, or flash drive for presentatio n.
• Use recycled paper.
Conserving in k
• Use Quick Print or Draft Mode. Th ese modes can be u sed to print documen ts using less ink than norma l and
are ideal for p rinting documents that are m ostly text.
• Use High Yield cartridges. Inks in High-Yield cartri dges allow you t o print more page s with fewer cart ridges.

• Clean the printhead. Before repl acing and recyc ling your ink cartrid ges, try using the “Clean Printhead” and
“Deep Clean Print head” features. These feat ures clean the printhead no zzles to improve the qualit y of your prints.
Recycling
• Return empty ink ca rtridges for reus e or recycling t hrough the Dell Cartridge Collec tion Program. To return
an empt y ink c artri dge, g o to www.dell.com/recycling to request a postage-paid ba g.
• Recycle the product packaging.
• Recycle your old printer instea d of throwing it away.
• Recycle paper from discarded print jobs.
• Use recycled paper.

Connect the printer to an active telephone line (through a standard wall j ack, DSL filter,
or VoIP adapter) to send and receive faxes.
7 USB port Connect the printer to a computer using a USB cable.

removing a USB cable or installation cable.

after removing the old ones, or the ink remaining in the printhead nozzles may dry out.
1 Turn on your prin ter.
2 Open the prin ter.
Note: The printhead moves to the cartr idge installation position.
3 Press the release tab, and then remove the used ink cartridge or cartridges.

4 Remove the new cartridges from the foil, and then r emove the protecti ve cap from each of the ink car tridges.
Install the blac k ink cartridge an d then the color i nk cartridge. Use two hands to install each cartridge.

• Insert a three-second pause in a fax number to wait for an outside line or get through an
automated answering system. Enter a pause only when you have already begun entering the
number.
• Display the last number dialed. Press the left or right arrow b utton to view the last five n umbers
dialed .

Changing the Power Saver timeout The Powe r Saver time out is the time it tak es for the printer to sw itch to Pow er Saver m ode when th e printer i s left
idle. The Power Saver feature opti mizes energy efficien cy by reducing th e printer power c onsumption (as mu ch as
28 percent on some printer models) compared to the defa ult printer set tings. To save t he most energy, select the
lowest Pow er Saver time out.

Saving energy with Eco-Mode The Eco-Mode featu re optimizes energy eff iciency and saves mon ey.
When Eco-Mode i s enabled, the pr inter automati cally switches to the follow ing settings:
• The printer display is dimmed.
• The pr inter c hanges to Powe r Saver mode aft er ten minutes .
Notes:
• If you are us ing Eco- Mode, th en the Eco- Mode se ttings override any chan ges you may make t o individual set tings
that are par t of Eco-Mo de.
• Eco-Mode is enabled by default.

Printing Preferences
When you selec t File Print with a document open and then click
Properties, a Printi ng Preferences dialog appear s. The dialog lets you selec t
options for the print job, s uch as the following:
• Select the number of copies to p rint.
• Print two-sided c opies.
• Selec t the pape r typ e.
• Add a watermark.
• Enhance images .
• Save se ttings.
Note: Printing Preferences is installed automatically w ith the printer softwar e.

Updating the printer soft ware (Windows only) Checking for software updates

2 Click All Pro gra ms or Programs , and then select the printer program folder from the list.
3 Select Printer Home .
4 Choose your printer from the printe r drop-down list.
5 From the Supp ort tab, sel ect Check for up dates .
6 Follow the i nstructions on the computer screen .
Reinstalling the printe r software If you encountered problems wh ile installing, or if your printer does not appea r in the Printers folder or as a printer
option wh en you send a pri nt job, the n try removin g and reinsta lling the printer sof tware.
Uninstalling the printe r softwa re 1 Click or Start .
2 Click All Pro gra ms or Programs , and then select the printer program folder from the list.
3 Select t he uninst all opt ion.
4 Follow the i nstructions on the computer screen to remove the software.
5 Once the uninstall process in complete , restart your comp uter.
