1.5 Descriptions and symbols of documents and paper

The descriptions and symbols used in this manual for documents and paper
are explained below.

Output side and feed direction

Paper is fed through this machine along the right side, positioned with the
side to be copied or printed on facing down, then fed out into the output tray
at the top of the machine. The direction in which paper is fed (indicated by
arrows in the following illustration), is called the feed direction.

"Width" and "length"

Whenever paper dimensions are
mentioned in this manual, the first value
always refers to the width of the paper
(shown as "X" in the illustration), and the
second value refers to the length (shown
as "Y").

Paper orientation

Lengthwise (w)
If the length (Y) is longer than the width (X),
the paper orientation is indicated by w.
Crosswise (v)
If the length (Y) is shorter than the width (X),
the paper orientation is indicated by v.
