1 Safety
This chapter points out the safety concept of the instrument and contains general rules of behavior
and warnings from hazards concerning the use of the product.
The safety of users and personnel can only be ensured if these safety instructions are strictly observed
and followed.
1.1 Proper use
The instrument has been designed and built for laboratories. It serves for nitrogen determination
according to Kjeldahl. The AutoKjeldahl Unit K-370 as stand-alone instrument may also be used for
distillations of steam-volatile substances.
In order to guarantee proper function of the transfer process, all sample particles must be smaller than
1.5 mm.

Applications not mentioned above are improper. Also applications which do not comply with the technical data are considered improper.
The operator bears the sole risk for any damages caused by such improper use.
The following uses are expressly forbidden:
Use of the instrument in rooms which require ex-protected instruments.

Use on samples which can explode or inflame (e.g.: explosives, etc.) due to shock, friction, heat or

spark formation.
1.3 Instrument-related hazards
Warning
Surface temperature exceeds 60 °C.
WARNING
Risk of injury.
Never operate the instrument when glassware is damaged.

Fundamental dangers arise from
hot acids and lye

flammable gases or solvent fumes in the direct vicinity of the instrument

damaged glass parts

insufficient distance between the instrument and the wall

burns caused by contact with hot glass parts

burns caused by contact with steam at the waste-outlet

defective transfer tube: escape of steam and/or sulfuric acid

1.5 General safety measures
Always wear personal protective equipment such as protective eye goggles, protective clothing and
gloves when working with the instrument.
1.6 Safety measures prior to maintenance work
WARNING
Electrical hazard:
•
Prior to all maintenance work on the instrument switch off the power supply and remove all
sources of flammable vapor.
WARNING
All maintenance and repair work requiring the opening or removal of instrument covers may only be
carried out by trained personnel and with the tools provided for this purpose.

Hot surface. The steam generator heats up during operation.
Always let the instrument cool down after operation before opening the service door.

1.7 Safety measures concerning transport and shipping
WARNING
At least two people must be involved in the manual transport of the Autosampler K-371 due to its
heavy weight of 42 kg. Watch your fingers when putting the instrument down.
WARNING
Biohazard:
Remove all dangerous substances from the instrument and clean it thoroughly.

2.1 pH electrode
Rinse the pH electrode and place it into the receiving vessel.
2.2 Calibrating the pH electrode
NOTE
It is recommended to use buffer solutions pH 4.00 and 7.00.
Discard buffer solutions after usage. Work with fresh solutions every day.
Select Operator > pH Calibration. Press
[Run], and follow the SOP given by the software.
2.3 Priming
Priming is used to prepare the entire system. Prior to the priming procedure check the chemical level
and switch on the cooling water. Priming includes distillation and titration with a clean and empty
sample tube. It is recommended to perform a priming at least once a day, before starting analysis. The
priming method can be modified.
Prime the system as follows:
Select Operator > System Preparation >
Priming.
Activate Proceed via Sampler if an Autosampler
K-371 is connected.
Prime the system 1 - 3 times by pressing [Run]
before starting the analysis.

2.4 Preheating
The glass parts of the distillation system have to be preheated prior to analysis (holding time > 10 min).
This is done by means of a clean and empty sample tube. It is recommended to perform a preheating,
when the glass (splash protector) has cooled down. The preheating time is predefined.

Select Operator > System Preparation > Preheating.
Activate Proceed via Sampler by pressing the
Enter key if an Autosampler K-371 is connected.
Start the preheating process by pressing [Run].

The methods described in the following just show one of various possibilities. Other procedures are
described in the Operation Manual.
3.1 Defining blanks using the express rack
Select Configurator > Rack and press [New]. Select the Group and User to which you want to
assign the new Rack (for Group definition see chapter 4.1.1).
Press [Page] twice and enter a name for the rack with the blanks.
Select Express by pressing the Tab key
Press the Enter key .
Press the Tab key again.
Press the Enter key .
Enter the information for Blank 1 and press [Save] and then [Next].
Enter the information for Blank 2 and press [Save] and then [Next].
Enter the information for Blank 3 and press [Save].
Press [Close].

3.2 Defining a sample rack and adding sample information to this rack
Select Configurator > Rack and press [New]. Select the Group and User to which you want to
assign the new Rack.
Press [Page] twice and enter a rack name.
Press [Save]. Press the Tab key and then press the Enter key .
Enter the sample information for Sample 1, then press [Save].
Press [Next] and enter the sample information for Sample 2.
Continue until you have entered all samples.
Press [Save], then press [Close].
3.3 Measuring blanks
Place the blanks for the measurement into the Express rack.
Select Operator > Determination > Rack with sampler and search for the rack you have defined
with the blank samples.
Press the Enter key .
Press [Run] to start the measurement of the blanks.
3.4 Blank consideration for samples in a rack
Select Operator > Determination > Rack with sampler. Search for the Rack with the samples
for which you like to use the blanks and press the Enter key , then press [Blank]. Select [Assign blanks manually], press the Enter key .

Select the blank to be considered and press
[Set].
Select the sample(s) with the Tab key and activate it/them by pressing the Enter key .
Press [Set] and then 4 times [Close].
3.5 Measuring samples in a rack with blank consideration
Place the samples for the measurement into the 20 rack.
Select Operator > Determination > Rack with sampler and search for the rack you have defined
with your samples. Press the Enter key .
Press [Run] to start the measurement of the samples.

4.1.1 Group definition
Use the Group Default or define a new Group.
Select Configurator > Group and press [New].
Enter a Group Name (e. g. Meat 1006).
Press [Save] then press [Close].

Enter the definition for the calculation of the mean

Select Configurator > Data Manager > Result > Group. Press [Print] to print out all results
summarized in the selected group.

6.1 Cleaning the instrument
At the end of the day, the system should be rinsed thoroughly by carrying out a cleaning. The splash
protector and the condenser are rinsed with water to remove sodium hydroxide residues. With regular
cleaning, the lifetime of the glass parts can be extended.
Select Operator > System preparation > Cleaning and press [Run] to start the cleaning process.
6.2 pH electrode
Rinse the pH electrode and store it in 3 mol/l KCl solution.
