What Is the NoteFolio™ Application?
The NoteFolio appl ication (App) for t he TI - 8 3 Pl us lets y ou enter
and edit t ext w ith the TI Keyboard. Al t hough text may be ent er ed
and edited using t he unit’s key pad, the keyb oar d m akes entering
text easier, and gener ally im proves the sp eed and accuracy of
text entry and editing.
The NoteFolio App i s handy for t aking notes i n class, creat i ng todo lists, and jotti ng down assignments or ot her thi ngs to
remember. Like a basic word processor or text editor, t he
NoteFolio App l et s you:

Key Considerations
You can en t er and edit text in th e NoteFol io™ App with either t he
TI- 83 Pl us keypad or the TI Key board. I f you use t he NoteFolio
App without a TI Keyboard, you cannot use shortcut key
combinations using the 2 modifier key.
The diamond key ( 2) on the TI Keyboard acts as a m odifier key ,
similar t o Con t r ol , Al t , or Command keys on other keyboards. The
NoteFolio App uses keyboar d c om mands in w hich you hold down
the 2 key and then press another key. In this gu idebook, t hat key
combin ation is shown as the diamon d symbol fol l owed by t he
other k ey. For examp le, you can press 2Q to quit th e NoteFol io
App. The square key (0) is not used in the NoteFolio Ap p.

Insert Mode and Overwrite Mode
With t he NoteFolio™ App, like most text editors or word
processors, text i s i nserted when you p l ace t he cursor wi t hin an
existing text block and begin typing. Text you type is inserted in
front of the text followi ng y our cursor . This is cal led insert m ode,
which is the normal mode of editing.
Note For best p er form ance from you r handheld when inserti ng
new text t hat is more than a few w or ds , i t is
recommended t hat you typ e t ext at the bottom of th e
note. When you complete typ i ng the new text , you can
then copy an d paste the text wher e necessary.
Also lik e ot her text edi t or s or word processor appli cat i ons,
NoteFolio has an overwrite mode, in w hich t he text you typ e
replaces, or w r i t e s over, t he text follo w i ng y our cursor . To switch
between insert m ode and overwrite m ode, press y 6 or 2 Del.
When in insert mode, the cursor is a blinking underline. When in
overwrite mode, t he cursor i s a blinking rectangle.

Using the Application
Basics of Entering Text
You can u se t he TI Keyboard with the NoteFolio™ App to t ype
upp er case or lowercase text by using t he Shift k eys or Caps Lock
key in conjunction with the letter keys.
If you do not have a TI Keyboar d, you can al so use the handhel d
keyp a d t o enter either up percase or low er cas e t ext . As always,
you p r ess ƒ to place the TI-83 Plus i n uppercase alp ha
mode, and then y ou can ent er upper cas e al phabet ic character s.
Note Pressing ƒ has n o effect on text ent r y from the
keyb o ard, if connec t ed.
In t he NoteFolio Ap p, if you press ƒ a second time, you can

The size of a file is limited b y the amount of availab le free RAM
and archi ve memor y. I f mem or y is lim i t ed, you m ay not b e able to
open or save a lar ge file.
If the TI-83 Pl us automatically powers down wh i le you ar e r unni ng
the NoteFoli o App, p r es s É to turn the unit back on. Your open
file remain s as you left it , and you can resume y our work .
If you c hoose New, Op en, or Exit from t he File menu before you
have saved a new note or chang es t o an existing note, you w ill be
promp t ed t o save an d name you r note before y o u can cont inue.
The NoteFolio App w ill first at t em pt to save a not e fi l e to archive.
If ther e is not en ough Ar chive free to save the not e, the NoteFolio
App will display an Archive full warning message and will then
attempt t o s ave th e fi l e t o RAM. If there is enough RAM free, the
note file w ill be saved to RAM.

NoteFolio App will di splay a Low RAM w ar ning message foll ow ed
by an ot her warning m essage showi ng that the note was saved
under the file name of NOT ET EMp.
Since NOTETEMp is t he tempor ar y file th e NoteFol io App u s es t o
save a note to wh en memory i s fu l l, be su r e t o protect your n ot e
from bein g overwritt en by s avin g it to a new file. To do this , free
up mem or y, run the NoteFol i o App, op en the fil e NOTETEMp,
choose Save As
from the Fil e m enu, and save the file with a
different n am e.
After verifyin g that t he note has been saved to another fil e, the
NOTETEMp t em porary file can be del e t ed i n order to free u p
addition al m em or y if needed.

Highlighting Text
You must high ligh t a block of text before you can cut, copy , or
delete it. You can also replace th e highlighted text by typin g over it
or pasting over it. The size of a block of text c an rang e from one
character t o the ent i r e t ex t file.
1. Use the arrow keys to place the c ursor at the begi nning of the
text that you want to highlight.
2. Using t he TI Keyboard, press and hold down t he Shift key,
and then use the arrow k eys to hi ghli ght the text.
3. Release the Sh i ft key and ar r ow key.
Note To highlight text using the TI-83 Plus keypad, press
y ~ or y |, press an ar r ow key to high ligh t t ex t , and

The NoteFolio™ App lets you cut or copy text from one note and
paste it i nto anot her, as lon g as you do not qu it the applic at i on
between editing sessions. When you quit the NoteFoli o App, the
contents of the Clipboard is discarded.
The TI-83 Plus uses RAM memory to store t ext that has been cut
or copied t o t he clip board or to stor e an action t hat you m ay want
to undo. If you r unit has low RAM mem or y available, you may
encoun ter difficul t i es w i th th e Cu t , Copy, Paste, and Undo
commands, in wh i c h case you will rec ei ve a low RAM er ror
message.

Finding Specific Characters or Words
The Find command w ill stop searching when it r eaches the end of
the not e fi l e. The Fin d c om mand searches for t ext from the
curren t cursor pos i t ion to the end of the note file. Therefore, for
best search result s , st ar t t he search at t he beginni ng of the fi l e.
1. Place the cursor wh er e you want to begin your search
(typically at the beginning of the file).
2. Open the
EDIT menu and select 5:Find.
3. In t he dialog box, ty pe the characters or w or ds you want to

As with other ap plicati on variables on the T I-83 Plu s, you can
combin e the NoteFoli o™ App note files. G r oupin g files tog ether
helps you org anize, st or e, and share them wit h others ea si l y. For
example, a t eacher might want t o send one group of notes t o
Engli sh1 students and an o t her group of notes t o Engli sh2
students.
Group i ng all ows you t o m ake a copy of tw o or m or e fi l es r esiding
in RAM and t hen stor e t hem as a group in user data archive
memory. The files m ust be in RAM before th ey can b e group ed. In
other wor ds, archived data cannot b e i ncluded i n a grou p.

Ungrouping Notes
Ungrou ping makes a cop y of the NoteFolio™ App fil es i n a grou p
stored in user data arch i ve an d places th em ungr ouped in
RAM.
During the ungr oupin g action , i f a duplic at e variable name is
detected in RAM, t he
DUPLICATE NAM E menu is displ ayed.
To ungroup a group of variables:
1. Press y L to display the MEMORY menu .
2. Select 8:Group to displ a y the GROUP UNGROUPmenu.

3. Press ~ to display the UNGROUP menu.
4. Press } and † to highlight the number next to the group
variable you want to ungroup, and then press Í.
The ungroup action is completed.
Note Ungrou ping does not rem ove th e group from user data

When you are done grouping/ungrouping notes, it is important to

Installation Error Messages
Low Battery
Do not attem pt to down load a Flash ap plication if th e l o w - battery
message appears on t he Home screen. Low batter y indi cat ion is
shown on the initial sc r een. If y ou receive this error dur ing an
instal l ation, change the bat t er i es before starting the installation
again.
Invalid Signature or Certificate
Electrical i nterferenc e m ay have caused a li nk to fail . Try t o i nstall
the application again.
Error in Xmit
This probl em is usually associ at ed with t he unit-to-unit cable and
its connection between t he han dhelds. Mak e sure the cable is
firmly i nserted in the li nk p or t of each handheld.

Archive Full
This er r or occurs wh en the T I-83 Plu s does not have suffici ent
memory for t he appl ication. In or der t o m ake room for anot her
application, you m ust delete an appl i c at i on or archived variables
from the T I-83 Plu s. Before you delete a n appl i c at i on from the
TI-83 Plus, you can save it on your computer using TI Connect™
or TI - G RAPH LI NK™ softw ar e for t he TI - 83 Pl us. You can r el oad
it to the TI -83 Plus later using the TI-GRAPH LINK or TI Connect
software.
