Tandberg Data FC420 Fibre Channel Bridge Quick Reference Guide
FIBRE CHANNEL BRIDGE
This Quick Reference Guide explains how to:
QUICK REFERENCE GUIDE
-- Install up to three FC420
bridges into a Tandberg Data M2500 tape library
tasks have been integrated in this document into one easy-tofollow procedure. As you perform the procedure, watch for instructions that specifically address a first-time installation or field replacement.
The Tandberg Data Web site (www.tandberg Data.com) also has a complete set of M2500 documents in PDF format.
STEP 1: PREPARE FOR INSTALLATION/REPLACEMENT
a. If this is a first-time installation (system upgrade), make sure you
have the following system requirements:
-- Point-to-point/fabric or arbitrated public or private loop topology.
-- For fabric configurations, a Fibre Channel switch approved by
Tandberg Data.
-- Network management software package approved by Tandberg
Data.
®
-- Windows
7 and 8, or other operating system approved by Tandberg Data.
Note: For a complete list of Tandberg Data-approved networking
hardware, software, and operating systems, contact the Tandberg Data Help Desk or an authorized Tandberg Data sales representative.
b. Make sure you have the tools recommended for this procedure:
-- #1 Phillips® screwdriver.
NT 4.0 SP6 or later, Windows 2000 SP2 or later, Solaris®
Note: Adobe Acrobat Reader software is required to view and print these documents. You can download a free copy of Adobe Acrobat Reader software at www.adobe.com.
-- Flat-blade screwdriver.
c. Take precautions to prevent electrostatic discharge (ESD). These
precautions include:
-- Wearing a properly grounded antistatic wrist strap.
-- Wearing other antistatic apparel (smock, footwear, etc.).
-- Keeping the FC420 Fibre bridge in its antistatic packaging until you
are ready to configure and install it.
Caution: Failure to take adequate antistatic precautions may
result in damage to the FC420 bridge or other library components.
STEP 2: INSTALL FC420 BRIDGE(S)
a. Turn off the library.
SCSI adapter
b. To install/replace the first FC420 bridge,
loosen the captive screws securing the primary electronics module, and then slide the module out using the handle.
c. If you are installing/replacing a second
or third FC420 bridge, remove the six screws that secure the auxiliary electronics module to the library back panel. Save the screws.

d. Prepare the expansion slot(s) required
for the installation.
If this is a first-time installation,
remove the hold-down clamp from the top of the primary electronics module.
Auxiliary electronics module
Save this clamp for reinstallation later. Also remove the cover plate from each slot required for the installation. If desired, save the cover plate(s) for future use.
M-2500 Library Back Panel
If you are replacing an FC420 bridge,
note the location of all cable connections, and then remove all cables from the defective FC420. Then, remove and set aside the hold-down clamp. Finally, remove the screws that secure the FC420 to the card cage and lift the FC420 out of the library expansion slot. Save the hold-down clamp for reinstallation.

e. Insert the FC420 bridge(s) into the expansion slot(s) prepared in step 2d
. Press down gently on the card edge
until each card is securely seated.
f. Repeat step 2e
until all FC420 bridges have been installed.
g. Secure each FC420 bridge to the electronics module frame using the screws provided.
h. To secure the primary electronics module, reattach the hold-down clamp and then slide the module back into the
library, securing it by tightening the captive screws.
i. To secure the auxiliary electronics module, insert the module into the library and secure it to the back panel
using the six screws removed in step 2c
.
STEP 3: CABLING THE FC420 BRIDGE(S)
Each FC420 Bridge has 2 SCSI ports and 1 Fibre Channel port. Follow these guidelines to establish SCSI and Fibre cabling:
-- The FC420 bridge can accommodate up to four DLT8000 tape drives per SCSI port, up to two SDLT or LTO
tapes drives per port when the bridge is set for 2 GB data transfers, and only one SDLT or LTO tape drive per port when the bridge is set for 1 GB data transfers. To maximize data throughput, reduce the number of tape drives per FC420 SCSI port.
-- The open connector on each drive must be terminated.
-- Because of the physical characteristics of the SCSI cable connectors, attach a SCSI cable from the upper SCSI
port on the SCSI controller in the primary electronics module to a SCSI connector on drive 1 first, and then attach a SCSI cable from SCSI port 0 on the FC420 Bridge (the left VHDCI connector) to the lower SCSI port on the library SCSI controller.
-- To ensure access to the library robot, all Fibre Channel cables from the library should connect to a switch or
similar device serving the storage area network (SAN).
For complete cabling instructions, refer to the Tandberg Data FC420 Bridge Option User’s Guide (PN T6423053).
STEP 4: CONFIGURE FC420 BRIDGE FIRMWARE
A command-line interface (CLI) is available to assist with FC420 Bridge configuration and maintenance as well as system diagnostics. Specifically, the CLI can be used to do the following:
-- Configure the Ethernet, Fibre Channel, and SCSI ports
-- Create device maps
-- Obtain FC420 Bridge status information
-- Log FC420 Bridge events
-- Report SCSI and Fibre Channel device information
For complete configuration instructions, refer to the Tandberg Data FC420 Bridge Option User’s Guide (PN T6423053).
STEP 5: RETURN THE DEFECTIVE BRIDGE
If you replaced an FC420 Bridge, the defective bridge must be returned to Tandberg Data within three business
days of receiving the new FC420 Bridge.
NOTE: If this is a first-time installation, this step is not necessary and may be skipped.
To return the defective bridge:
a. Locate the bill of lading shipped with the field-replaceable unit (FRU). The bill of lading should list Tandberg
Data’s shipping address and a unique return-material authorization (RMA) number. If you cannot find the shipping address or RMA number, contact Tandberg Data to obtain them.
b. Place the defective bridge in the FRU Kit packaging.
c. Seal the packaging properly and place it in a new shipping container.
d. Address the shipping container using the shipping address on the bill of lading. Be sure to write the RMA
number on the shipping container.
e. Ship the defective bridge.
