2 Getting to know your c omputer
Your c omputer features t op-rated components. This chapt er provides details about your componen ts, where
they're located, and how the y work.
Right side Table 2-1 Right -side components and their descriptions
Component Description
(1) Power light ● On: The computer is on.
● Blinking: The computer is in the Sleep stat e, a power-saving state. The
computer shuts o power to the displa y and other unneeded components.
● O: The computer is o or in Hibernation. Hibernation is a power -saving state
that uses the least amount of pow er .
(2) Drive light ● Blinking white: The hard drive is being acc essed.
(3) Memor y car d reader Reads optional memory cards th at enable you to store, man age, share, or access
information.
To insert a car d:
1. Hold the card label-side up, with connect ors facing the computer .
2. Insert the card into the memory card reader, and then pres s in on the card
until it is rmly seated.
To r emove a card:
▲ Pull to remove the card from the memory card reader .
(4) USB por t Connects a USB device, such as a cell phone, camera, activity track er, or
smartwatch, and provides data transf er .
(5) Optical driv e Depending on your computer model, re ads an optical disc or reads and writes to an
optical disc.
(6) Optical driv e eject button Releases the optical drive disc tr ay.
(7) Security cable slot Attaches an optional security cable to the computer .
NOTE: The security cable is designed to act as a deterrent, but it may no t prevent
the computer from being mishandled or s tolen.

(1) Power connector Connects an AC adapter .
(2) AC adap ter and battery light ● White: The AC adapter is connect ed and the battery is fully
charged.
● Blinking white: The AC adapter is disconnect ed and the
battery has reached a low batt ery level.
● Amber: The AC adapter is connected and the battery is
charging.
● O: The battery is not charging.
(3) R J-45 (network) jack/ status lights Connects a network cable.
● White: The network is connected.
● Amber: Activity is occurring on the network.
(4) HDMI port Connects an optional video or audio device, such as a high-
denition television, any compatibl e digital or audio component,
or a high-speed High-Denition Multimedia Interface (HDMI)
device.
(5) USB SuperSpeed ports (2) Connect a USB device, such as a cell phone, camera, activity
tracker, or smartwatch, and pro vide high-speed data transfer .
(6) Audio-out (headphone)/Audio-in (microphone)
combo jack
Connects optional powered st ereo speakers, headphones,
earbuds, a headset, or a television audio cabl e. Also connects an
optional headset microphone. This jack does not support
optional standalone microphones.

Component Description
(1) WLAN antennas* (1 or 2 depending on model) Send and receive wireless signals t o communicate with wireless l ocal
area networks (WLANs).
(2) Camera light On: The camera is in use.
(3) Camera Allows you to video ch at, record video, and record s till images. Some
cameras also allow a facial rec ognition logon to Windows, instead of
a password logon..
NOTE: Camera functions vary depending on the camera hardware
and software installed on yo ur product.
(4) Internal microphone Records sound.
*The antennas are not visible from the o utside of the computer . For optimal transmission, keep the areas immediatel y around the
antennas free from obstructions.

(1) Power button ● When the computer is o, press the butt on to turn on the
computer .
● When the computer is on, press the butt on briey to
initiate Sleep.
● When the computer is in the Sleep state, pr ess the button
briey to exit Sleep.
● When the computer is in Hibernation, press the butt on
briey to exit Hibernation.
CAUTION: Pressing and holding down the power butt on results
in the loss of unsaved information.
If the computer has stopped r esponding and shutdown
procedures are ineective, pr ess and hold the power button
down for at least 5 seconds t o turn o the computer .
To l earn more about your power settings, see your po wer
options:
▲ Right-click the Power icon , and then select Power
Options.
(2) Speakers (2) Produce sound.
(3) Vent Enables airow to cool internal c omponents.
NOTE: The computer fan starts up automaticall y to cool
internal components and preven t overheating. It is normal for
the internal fan to cycle on and o during r outine operation.

(1) esc key Displays system information when pre ssed in combination with
the fn key .
(2) fn key Executes specic functions when pressed in combin ation with
another key .
(3) Windows key Opens the Start menu.
NOTE: Pressing the Windows ke y again will close the Start
menu.
(4) Action keys Execute frequently used sys tem functions.
NOTE: On select products, the f5 action key turns the k eyboard
backlight feature o or on.
(5) num lock key Alt ernates between the navigational and numeric functions on
the integrated numeric ke ypad.
(6) Integrated numeric k eypad A separate keypad t o the right of the alphabet keyboard. When
num lock is pressed, the ke ypad can be used like an external
numeric keypad.
NOTE: If the keypad function is active when the comput er is
turned o, that function is reinstated when the comput er is
turned back on.

Action keys An action key performs the function indicated b y the icon on the key . To determine which k eys are on your
product, see Special keys on p age 12.

connected to the computer, r epeatedly pressing this k ey alternates the scr een image from the computer
display to the monitor display to a simul taneous display on both the computer and the monit or .

NOTE: To c onserve battery power, turn o this feature.
Mutes or restores s peaker sound.
Decreases speak er volume incrementally while y ou hold down the key .
Increases speak er volume incrementally while y ou hold down the key .
Plays the previous track of an audio CD or the pr evious section of a DVD or a Blu-ray Disc (BD).
Starts, pauses, or resumes playback of an audio CD, a D VD, or a BD.
Plays the next track of an audio CD or the next section of a DVD or a BD .
Turns the airplane mode and wireles s feature on or o.
NOTE: The airplane mode key is also referr ed to as the wireless button.
NOTE: A wireless network must be set up befor e a wireless connection is possible.

Vent Enables airow to cool internal c omponents.
NOTE: The computer fan starts up automaticall y to cool internal
components and prevent ov erheating. It is normal for the internal fan
to cycle on and o during routine operation.

Labels The labels axed to the computer pr ovide information you may need when you tr oubleshoot system
problems or travel in ternationally with the comp uter . Labels may be in paper form or imprinted on the
product.
IMPORT ANT: Check the following l ocations for the labels described in this section: the bottom of the
computer, inside the battery bay, under the service door, on the back o f the display, or on the bottom of a
tablet kickstand.
● Service label—Provides important inf ormation to identify your computer . When contacting support, you
may be asked for the serial number, the pr oduct number, or the model number . Locate this information
before you c ontact support.
