1Description
The Microprocessor pH Meter CG 839 can be used to make pH-value, redox voltage and temperature
measurements. The measured temperature is shown in the display parallel to the pH or mV value.
The calibration data for pH measurements are preserved when the Microprocessor pH Meter CG 839 is
switched off.
For adjustment to match the electrode function, the data for three buffer solutions, including their
temperature characteristics, are stored in the Microprocessor pH Meter CG 839.
2Commissioning
The Microprocessor pH Meter CG 839 is delivered ready for operation. A warning appears in good time in
the display when the batteries are nearly exhausted.
Connect the electrode type no. N 2042 A combination electrode with integrated temperature sensor
(resistance thermometer Pt 1000).
Switch-on the Microprocessor pH -Meter CG 839: Hold the <on/off>- key, the <pH>- key or the <mV>- key
depressed until the message <<WAIT>> appears in the upper left corner of the display. The
Microprocessor pH Meter CG 839 is ready to measure, when <<WAIT>> disappears.
3Calibration of the Microprocessor pH Meter CG 839 ("Calibrate")
The simplest procedure is to use a combination pH-electrode with integrated temperature sensor, e. g.
type no. N 2042 A. The buffer solutions whose data are stored in the Microprocessor pH Meter CG 839
have the following pH-values at 25 °C: pH = 4.00, pH = 7.00, and pH = 10.00. The call-up sequence of the
buffer solutions is arbitrary.
Dip the electrode into the first buffer solution used and press the corresponding <cal>-key. The messages
<<CAL>>, <<WAIT>>, <<P1>> and the corresponding pH-value appear in the display. <<WAIT>> flashes
when the buffer solution has been identified and disappears when the reading has become stable. The
message <<P2>> flashes as request to continue the calibration procedure.
Rinse the electrode with distilled water and then repeat the procedure with the second buffer solution. The
corresponding indication is <<P2>>. Actual temperature differences of the buffer solutions are
automatically normalized to 25 °C.
When the Microprocessor pH Meter CG 839 has automatically taken-over the calibration, the messages
<<CAL>> and <<OK>> appear in the display, and then the electrode zero-point pH-value and the slope in
%. The Microprocessor pH Meter CG 839 with electrode is now ready for making measurements. To
display the slope and zero-point again, press one of the <cal>- keys and thereafter the <pH>- key.
4Single-point calibration
A simplified calibration can be made as described under chapter 3 "Calibration of the Microprocessor
pH Meter CG 839" with only one buffer solution. When the flashing message <<P2>> appears in the
display, terminate the calibration procedure by pressing the <pH>- key. This single-point calibration
corrects the electrode zero-point and keeps the slope value from the previous full calibration.
5pH-measurement with combination pH-electrode
type no. N 2042 A(with integrated temperature sensor Pt 1000)
Press the <pH>- key to switch to the <<pH>>- function. The function displays <<pH>> and <<°C auto>>
light up.
Dip the electrode into the sample solution. The temperature-compensated pH-value reading appears in
the display after elapse of an adequate temperature equilibration time.
10
6pH-measurement with combination pH-electrode and
separate temperature sensor Pt 1000
pH-measurement with automatic temperature-compensation is possible too using a combination pHelectrode and a separate Pt 1000 temperature sensor. In this case, connect one plug of the temperature
sensor to the socket marked Pt 1000 and connect the other plug to the reference electrode socket.
7pH-measurement with manual temperature compensation
When using an electrode without integrated temperature sensor (e. g. combination pH-electrode type
no. N 62), the manually set temperature is shown in the display together with the message <<°C man>>.
This temperature value can be adjusted with the keys <> and <> to correspond to the actual
measuring temperature. Manual temperature adjustment is not possible in the <<mV>>-function and no
temperature is indicated in the display.
8mV-measurement
Press the <mV>- key to switch the Microprocessor pH Meter CG 839 to the <<mV>>-function. The
<<mV>>- function display lights up.
Dip the electrode combination (e. g. the combination Pt-electrode, type no. Pt 62, for redox voltage
measurements) into the sample solution. The digital display shows the resulting reading directly in mV.
9Temperature measurement
Dip the Pt 1000 temperature sensor or the combination electrode type no. N 2042 A (with integrated
temperature sensor) into the sample medium.
The display shows the temperature reading. The simultaneously displayed pH- or mV-value is of no
significance if only the temperature sensor is connected.
10Hold function
Press the <hold>- key to hold the readings. The message <<HOLD>> appears in the display. Press the
<on/off>- key to switch the Microprocessor pH Meter CG 839 back to the normal measuring mode.
11Automatic switch-off
The Microprocessor pH Meter CG 839 switches itself off automatically 60 minutes after the last keypress.
To override this automatic switch-off function, switch-on the Microprocessor pH Meter CG 839 with the
<on/off>- key whilst simultaneously holding the key <cal 7.00> and <hold> depressed. Only the message
<<HOLD>> appears in the display as acknowledge. The Microprocessor pH Meter CG 839 is ready for
making measurements after pressing the <on/off>- key again. The automatic switch-off function is always
disabled in <<HOLD>> mode of the Microprocessor pH Meter CG 839.
12Reset function
If the Microprocessor pH Meter CG 839 gives incorrect readings or displays for no apparent reason, the
Microprocessor pH Meter CG 839 must be switched-off. Then press the <hold>-key and the <on/off>- key
at the same time. Only the message <<HOLD>> appears in the display. The Microprocessor pH Meter
CG 839 is ready for making measurements after pressing the <on/off>- key again. After switching-on in
this way, the Microprocessor pH Meter CG 839 is set to 98 % slope and zero-point pH = 7.00. A new
calibration with the electrode is necessary if the actual electrode characteristic differs from these values.
11
13Error messages
<<Err1>>:Overshoot of the measuring range. This error message disappears again automatically
when the reading returns to within the measuring range.
<<Err2>>:The response time of the electrode is too long (greater than 1 minute). This error message
appears during the calibration procedure. Usually the cause is that the electrode has not
been watered properly or is too old. <<Err2>> also appears when no electrode is
connected.
<<Err3>>:A buffer solution which does not correspond to the pressed <cal>-key has been used. To
cure this error, press the correct key.
<<Err4>>:The temperature during calibration lies below 0 °C or above 100 °C. Correct the
temperature to lie within this range.
<<Err5>>:The same <cal>- key has been pressed twice. This error message disappears after
pressing the correct <cal>- key.
<<Err%>>:The slope of the electrode is less than 85 % or more than 105 % of the theoretical value.
<<ErrpH>>: The zero-point of the electrode lies below pH = 5.5 or above pH = 8.0. Change electrode.
14Battery replacement
Changing of batteries may be done only by the manufacturer.
15Safety warnings and instructions
The Microprocessor pH Meter CG 839 may be used only for the purposes described in these operating
instructions.
The nominal pH-values of the buffer solutions used for calibration must correspond exactly to the pHvalues marked on the <cal>-keys.
The warranty becomes void in the case of unauthorised tampering inside or damage to the
Microprocessor pH Meter CG 839.
The repair of the Microprocessor pH Meter CG 839 may be done only by the manufacturer.
Please also observe the operating instructions for the units to be connected.
Please take note of the enclosed certificate of conformity from Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt
PTB Nr. Ex-90.C.2012 (a german administrative body).
