Can you use a desktop PC as a server?
• While it’s
possible
to use a desktop PC as a server, keep in mind that desktop PCs are designed and optimized for
individual
productivity, not
network
productivity.
• Compared to PCs, servers are specially optimized and certified for Network Operating Systems, provide more room for expansion, and offer special server management tools and features to ensure data integrity, reliability, and security in a networked environment.
• For the same price, a dedicated server is the best value for the money.
Get up and running immediately
Setting up a server could be complex: Is everything compatible? How can performance be optimized without spending hours of valuable time fine-tuning it?
HP makes setting up a server easy by providing assistance every step of the way—from ordering to installation to configuration. With a smooth, fast setup, the HP NetServer E Series helps workgroups start boosting their productivity and efficiency almost immediately.
Optimized for the four leading Network Operating Systems (NOS)—Microsoft®Windows®NT
Server, SCO®OpenServer™, Novell®IntranetWare®, and MSDOS®—the HP NetServer E Series features automated hardware configuration and a preinstalled and configured network adapter card, streamlining and simplifying your setup.
Whether you’re setting up a server to share resources such as printers and scanners, or to share information and applications, the built-in HP NetServer Navigator will help you sail through the configuration process, including the NOS installation. You can be assured everything is set up correctly—and configured for optimum performance.

Safeguarding your business-critical information
From your confidential customer information to future product plans to financial documents—you can’t afford to lose information that gives you a competitive advantage. A solid backup system can give you peace of mind.
You have several backup choices with the HP NetServer E Series, beginning with the HP SureStore T4i, a low-cost tape backup system specially designed for use with the HP NetServer E Series. Dependability has never been so affordable.
For high-performance backup, choose the HP SureStore Digital Audio Tape (DAT) backup system and select a referenced backup solution such as Cheyenne™or Seagate
®
software: the HP NetServer E Series supports both.
A range of optional backup choices
When it comes to backup, you’ve got options. From the low-cost HP SureStore T4i to the highperformance HP SureStore DAT drive, there’s a solution to fit your needs.
An optimized solution
HP—the industry leader in backup solutions— specifically designed and optimized the HP SureStore T4i for use with the HP NetServer E Series, ensuring maximum dependability at a low cost.
HP dependability
With a mean-time-between-failures of 200,000 hours—that’s more than 22 years—you can be confident the HP SureStore T4i tape backup drive will be there when you need it.
Affordable
To help you minimize capital investment costs, the HP SureStore T4i is affordable: check out the price tag.
“I want a backup
solution that’s fast,
easy, and reliable,
so I don’t wake up at
3 a.m. worrying if our
customer database
is safe.”
HP NetServer E Series highlights
• Specially designed, optional, HP SureStore T4i tape backup solution providing 4GB native storage capacity and up to 8GB compressed (using data compression software)
• Optional, high-performance HP SureStore DAT backup solution
• Support for referenced solutions— Cheyenne and Seagate

Why is optimization important?
• While both servers and desktop PCs may offer comparable individual components (processor, memory, input/output systems), a real server delivers optimized performance of those components, ensuring all the parts work together to provide the highest server functionality.
• Designed to transmit data as quickly as possible to and from network users, servers are also optimized to work with network backup systems, allowing your important data to be stored and recovered quickly and reliably.

Easy to troubleshoot
“I want a server so
dependable it doesn’t
need troubleshooting.
Avoiding problems
before they start is
my idea of
troubleshooting.”
Friendly and dependable for maximum peace of mind
When you have little or no dedicated support, time spent tending your server is time spent away from your business: You need a server you can rely on for maximum uptime—and that’s exactly what you’ll get with the HP NetServer E Series.
From extensive self-tests to Error Checking and Correcting (ECC) memory to Automatic Server Restart (ASR), the HP NetServer E Series is designed to monitor and correct itself. If your attention is needed, the HP Support Anywhere Auto Alert will notify you via an onscreen message and suggest potential issue resolutions using easy-to-understand language.
Need more information? The innovative HP Support Anywhere Web Interface lets you easily view and monitor key server information. From configuration to alert history to server status, it’s all there for local or remote access. Going one step further, HP Support Anywhere Remote Console enables your authorized support provider to remotely manipulate your server, performing hands-on troubleshooting as if they were sitting right beside you. You enjoy immediate results, while saving the expense of on-site visits.
What do ASR and ECC do?
• Industry experts estimate that 80 percent of server stoppages are caused by hangs in the Network Operating System (NOS). Automatic Server Restart (ASR) and Error Checking and Correcting (ECC) memory—valuable server reliability features not found on desktop PCs— help ensure maximum availability.
• ECC memory helps minimize system hangs in the first place, and ASR automatically reboots a server when a stall does occur, getting the system back up and running immediately.
HP NetServer E Series highlights
• Built-in Automatic Server Restart (ASR)
• Error Checking and Correcting (ECC) memory
• HP Support Anywhere Auto Alert using a friendly user interface provides proactive warning of problems and advice on quick resolution
• HP Support Anywhere Web Interface for easy access to key server information
• HP Support Anywhere Remote Console for remote server management and troubleshooting
Self-monitoring and correcting
Constantly monitoring your server’s “pulse,” the built-in Automatic Server Restart will automatically reboot your server should the Network Operating System (NOS) stall. And Error Checking and Correcting memory will help minimize stoppages before they happen.
HP Support Anywhere Auto Alert
Relax, your server is on autopilot. The simple, friendly HP Support Anywhere Auto Alert software will notify you if there’s an issue, and recommend alternatives for resolving it—fast.
Easy Web access to key server information
Use the friendly HP Support Anywhere Web Interface to view key server information via a custom, secure Web page internal to your organization.
“Remote control” management
Using the innovative HP Support Anywhere Remote Console capability, you can authorize your support provider to remotely monitor, manage, and troubleshoot your server as if they were sitting beside you.
Wide range of HP support options
A broad choice of hardware and software support options are available—up to 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Easy to expand
Flexibility and expandability for the future
In today’s fast-moving business environment, staying competitive means being able to adapt quickly to change and opportunity. For longterm maximization of your server investment, you need a server that can change and grow with your network needs—from adding more memory and storage to adding new users and applications.
HP NetServer E 45 servers have plenty of room to grow, starting with six mass storage shelves (four of which are free for additions), six expansion slots, and an optional external disk array.
Upgrading applications or adding more users to your network? These activities can place greater demands on your server, calling for more memory for optimal performance. No problem: the HP NetServer E 45 can be expanded up to a maximum of 384MB of Error Checking and Correcting (ECC) memory and comes standard with 2MB of video memory.
Best of all, because the built-in HP Support Anywhere Auto Alert is constantly monitoring your server, it will let you know automatically when more storage is needed. What could be easier?
Lots-o’-slots
Six mass storage shelves and six expansion slots give you plenty of room to grow.
Expandable memory
Installing a memory-hungry application? Expand the Error Checking and Correcting (ECC) memory up to 384MB maximum and the video memory to a maximum of 2MB.
Up to 36.4GB internal storage
Plug 4.2GB of storage into each of the four free mass storage shelves for a maximum of 16.8GB in our Pentium Pro systems. Pentium II systems support a maximum of 36.4GB (4 x 9.1GB HDD) of internal storage.
Optional external storage
Future growth is easy. The optional HP NetServer Storage System/6 allows maximum expansion.
Automatic capacity planning
Not sure if your server needs more storage? The HP Support Anywhere Auto Alert will continuously monitor your hard disk capacity and automatically tell you when the time is right.
What will your network needs be tomorrow?
• Servers are specially designed for expansion, offering much more room to grow. As your network needs change, you may want to add more memory and hard disk capacity to ensure optimum efficiency.
• With more free expansion slots, larger hard disks, and the ability to add external storage, servers are uniquely designed to accommodate your changing needs and leverage your capital investments.
HP NetServer E 45 highlights
• Six mass storage shelves: four front-accessible (two preinstalled: CD-ROM and flexible drive), two internal
• Six expansion slots: two PCI, two PCI/ISA combination, two ISA
• Expandable RAM to a maximum of 384MB
• 2MB video memory standard
• Optional external disk array
• HP Support Anywhere Auto Alert provides automatic notification when more hard disk capacity is needed
“I need a server that
can grow right along
with me. Even better—
I’d like one that could
tell me when it needs
to grow!”
