About switching devices

So, you're switching BlackBerry® devices? Likely, you have email addresses, contacts, and other data that you want to move from your previous device to your new one.
You will need the following components to complete this process: your device, the BlackBerry® Desktop Software, and any email accounts that you've added to the BlackBerry® Internet Service. You can use the process flow at the beginning of this guide as a checklist to make sure you've covered all of the steps that you need to transfer your data.
Some of the steps documented in this guide might differ slightly depending your versions of the BlackBerry Device Software and the BlackBerry Desktop Software. To find more information specific to your software version, visit
www.blackberry.com/go/docs.

Process flow: Switch BlackBerry devices

If you answer no to any of the questions below, skip to the next step in the process flow. If you answer yes, click the link that follows the question to see the steps that you need to complete.
1. Do you want to move your data (for example, contacts, messages, and appointments) from your previous BlackBerry® device to your new one? Select your version of BlackBerry® Desktop Software from the list below.

2. Does your device have a SIM card? Move your SIM card to a new device.
3. Does your device operate on CDMA networks? Contact your wireless service provider to switch devices.
4. Do you have an existing email account (for example Windows Live™ Hotmail®) that you want to move from your previous device to your new device? Move an email address to a new device
5. Will someone else be using your previous device? For example, are you preparing your device for resale? Delete
the data from your previous device

Move data to a new device using BlackBerry Desktop Software for Windows

Before you begin: Install the most recent version of the BlackBerry® Desktop Software from www.blackberry.com/
desktop.
1. Connect your new device to your computer.
2. Open the BlackBerry® Desktop Manager.
3. Click Device Switch Wizard.
4. Click Start.

5. Complete the instructions on the screen.

Move data to a new device using BlackBerry Web Desktop Manager
1. Connect your new BlackBerry® device to your computer.
2. Click Yes - Switch my BlackBerry services to this device.
3. Click Yes - Transfer the data.
4. Complete the instructions on the screen.
After you finish: Do not disconnect your device from your computer until the activation process on your device is complete.

Move data to a new device using BlackBerry Desktop Software for Mac

Back up device data

1. Connect your previous BlackBerry® device to your computer.
2. On your computer, in the Applications folder, click the BlackBerry Desktop Manager icon.
3. Click the Back Up icon at the top of the screen.
• To back up all device data, click All data.
• To back up specific data, click Selected data. Select the check box beside one or more databases.
4. If necessary, do the following:
• To encrypt the device data, select the Encrypt backup file check box.
• To back up on-board device memory, select the Back up on-board device memory check box. To perform
this task, on your device, mass storage mode must be turned on.
5. Click Back Up.
After you finish: If you encrypted your backup data, type a password when you are prompted.

Restore device data

Before you begin: To perform this task, on your BlackBerry® device, mass storage mode must be turned on.
1. Connect your new device to your computer.
2. On your computer, in the Applications folder, click the BlackBerry Desktop Manager icon.
3. Click the Restore icon at the top of the screen.
4. Do one of the following:

• Select a .bbb backup file. To restore all data in the backup file, click Restore all data. To restore specific
selected data in the backup file, click Restore selected data. Select the check box beside one or more databases.
• To restore data from a backup file that is not listed, click Open Another Backup File. Navigate to the .bbb
backup file. Click Open.
5. Click Restore.

Move your SIM card to a new device

Move your SIM card to a new device
In most devices that use a SIM card, the SIM card holder is located underneath the battery. For more specific information about inserting or removing the SIM card in the device model that you are using, visit
www.blackberry.com/go/docs and refer to the Start Here guide for your device model.
Before you begin: Depending on your BlackBerry® device model, your device might not use a SIM card.
1. Turn off both the new device and your previous device.
2. Remove the batteries from both devices.
3. Remove the SIM card from your previous device.
4. Insert the SIM card into the SIM card holder in your new device.
5. Replace the battery.

Move an email address to a new device

Before you can start receiving email on your new device, you'll need to move your email addresses.
1. In the Setup folder, click Email Settings.
2. Click Move.
3. When you are prompted, type the password for your email address. If you want to see your password as you type it, select the Show Password checkbox.
4. Click Next.
5. Repeat steps 3 and 4 for any remaining email addresses.

Delete the data from your previous device

CAUTION: If you have turned on encryption, the process for deleting all device data can take up to an hour to complete. You cannot stop the process after you start it. If you reset your device, the process begins again after the device restarts.
1. Using your previous device, on the Home screen or in a folder, click the Options icon.
2. Click Security Wipe.
3. Do any of the following:

• To delete data from the messages application, contacts application, and other applications, select the Emails,
Contacts, Etc check box.
• To delete all third-party applications that you have added, select the User Installed Applications check box.
4. Type blackberry.
5. Click Wipe.

Some airtime service providers might not offer Internet browsing functionality with a subscription to the BlackBerry® Internet Service. Check with your service provider for availability, roaming arrangements, service plans and features. Installation or use of Third Party Products and Services with RIM's products and services may require one or more patent, trademark, copyright, or other licenses in order to avoid infringement or violation of third party rights. You are solely responsible for determining whether to use Third Party Products and Services and if any third party licenses are required to do so. If required you are responsible for acquiring them. You should not install or use Third Party Products and Services until all necessary licenses have been acquired.
