MAIN COMPONENTS
FUEL
WARNING
The fuel used for internal combustion engines is extremely inflammable and can explode in particular conditions. It is important to refuel and carry on the maintenance operations in a well-ventilated area and when the engine is off. Do not smoke while refuelling or near fuel vapours and avoid any contact with naked flames, sparks and any other heat source that can cause fires or explosions. Prevent the fuel from flowing out of the filler since it could catch fire when coming in contact with the red-hot parts of the engine. Should some fuel be accidentally spilt, make sure that the area is completely dry before starting the vehicle. As fuel expands due to heat and sun radiation, do not fill the tank to the brim. Close the cap carefully after refuelling. Avoid any contact of the fuel with the skin, vapour inhalation, ingestion and any transfer from one container to another by means of a pipe.
DO NOT DISPOSE OF FUEL IN THE ENVIRONMENT.
KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN.
Use only unleaded premium grade petrol, minimum octane number (91 – N.O.R.M.) and 81 (N.O.M.M.)
TANK CAPACITY (reserve included): – 16,5 l

BRAKE FLUID - recommendations
IMPORTANT This vehicle is provided
with front and rear disk brakes, with separate hydraulic circuits. The following information refers to a single braking system, but it is valid for both.
WARNING
Sudden resistance or clearance problems on the brake lever may be due to failures in the hydraulic system. In case of any doubt about the correct working of the braking system or should it be impossible to carry on the usual checking operations, please contact an aprilia Official Dealer.
WARNING
Pay particular attention to the brake disk and friction material: make sure that they are not dirty or oily, especially after maintenance or checking operations. Make sure that the brake pipe is neither twisted nor worn out.
KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN
DO NOT DISPOSE OF THE FLUID IN THE ENVIRONMENT.
DISK BRAKES
WARNING
The brakes are the parts that most guarantee your safety, therefore they must always work perfectly; check them before every trip.
A dirty disk soils the pads, thus reducing the braking efficiency. Dirty pads must be replaced, while dirty disks must be cleaned with a high-quality degreasing product.
The brake fluid must be replaced every two years by an aprilia Official Dealer.

-MIN-
IMPORTANT This vehicle is provided
with front and rear disk brakes, with separate hydraulic circuits. The following information refers to a single braking system, but it is valid for both.
When the pads are worn out, the brake fluid level in the reservoir decreases so as to automatically compensate for their wear. The brake reservoirs are placed under the handlebar cover, near the brake lever connections. Periodically check the brake fluid level in the reservoirs, see beside (CHECKING), and the wear of the pads, see page 48 (CHECKING THE WEAR OF THE BRAKE PADS).
WARNING
Do not use the vehicle if the braking system leaks fluid.
use and maintenance Atlantic 500
28
CHECKING
To check the brake fluid level:
IMPORTANT Position the vehicle on a
firm and flat ground.
Position the vehicle on the central stand.Turn the handlebar, so that the fluid in the
brake reservoir is parallel to the “MIN” mark on the glass gauge (1).
Make sure that the fluid in the reservoir
exceeds the “MIN” mark on the glass gauge (1).
MIN = minimum level.
If the fluid does not reach at least the “MIN” mark:
CAUTION
When the pads wear out, the fluid level decreases gradually.
Check the wear of the brake pads, see
page 48 (CHECKING THE WEAR OF THE
BRAKE PADS) as well as the disk wear. If the pads and/or the disk are not to be replaced:
Contact an aprilia Official Dealer, who will
carry on the topping up.
CAUTION
Check the braking efficiency. In case of excessive stroke of the brake lever or inefficiency of the braking system, contact an aprilia Official Dealer since it may be necessary to bleed the system.
COOLANT
1
CAUTION
Do not use the vehicle if the coolant is below the “MIN” level.
Check the coolant level every 2000 km (1250 miles) and after long trips: have the coolant replaced by an aprilia Official Dealer every two years.
WARNING
The coolant is noxious: do not swallow it; any contact with the skin or the eyes can cause irritations. Should the coolant get in contact with your skin or eyes, rinse with plenty of water and call a doctor. If it is swallowed, induce vomit, rinse mouth and throat with plenty of water and call a doctor immediately.
DO NOT DISPOSE OF THE COOLANT IN THE ENVIRONMENT
KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN
Avoid spilling the coolant on the red-hot parts of the engine; it may catch fire and produce invisible flames. In case of maintenance operations, it is advisable to use latex gloves. For the coolant change, contact an aprilia Official Dealer.
The coolant consists of 50% water and 50% antifreeze. Such mixture is ideal for most working temperatures and ensures a good protection against corrosion. It is advisable to use the same mixture in the hot season as well, since losses due to evaporation are reduced and frequent topping up operations are no more necessary. Consequently, mineral salt deposits left in the radiator by evaporated water are reduced and it is possible to keep the cooling system in good conditions. Should the outside temperature be below 0° C, check the cooling circuit frequently by increasing the antifreeze concentration (up to max. 60%), if needed.
Use distilled water for the coolant solution so as to avoid damaging the engine.
WARNING
Do not remove the expansion tank plug (1) when the engine is hot, since the coolant is under pressure and very hot. If coming in contact with skin or clothes, it may cause serious damages and/or burns.

Otherwise:
Remove the front cover, see page 54 (REMOVING THE FRONT COVER)
Loosen the filler cap (1) anticlockwise with-
out removing it.
Wait a few seconds in order to release any
residual pressure.
IMPORTANT A breather pipe (3) is con-
nected to the filler cap (1). Neither force, nor disconnect the breather pipe (3).
Unscrew and remove the filler cap (1).
WARNING
The coolant is noxious: do not swallow it; any contact with the skin or the eyes can cause irritations. Do not use your fingers or any other object to check if there is enough coolant.
CAUTION
When topping up, never exceed the “MAX” level so as to prevent the coolant from flowing out of the tank during the engine working.
Top up with coolant, see page 74 (TABLE
OF LUBRICANTS), until reaching approx. the “MAX” mark.
Put back the filler cap (1).
CAUTION
In case of excessive consumption of coolant and if the tank remains empty, make sure there are no leaks in the circuit. To repair it, contact an aprilia Official Dealer .
Put back the front cover, see page 54 (REMOVING THE FRONT COVER).
TYRES
This vehicle is provided with tubeless tyres.
WARNING
Periodically check the inflation pressure of the tyres at room temperature, see page 70 (TECHNICAL DATA)
If the tyres are hot, the measurement is not correct. Carry on the measurement especially before and after a long trips. If the inflation pressure is too high, the unevenness of the ground cannot be dampened and is therefore transferred to the handlebar, thus compromising the driving comfort and reducing road holding during turns.
1
If, on the contrary, the inflation pressure is too low, the tyre sidewalls (1) are under greater stress, thus causing the tyre to slip on the rim or to come off, making you lose control of the vehicle. In case of sudden braking, the tyres could get out of the rims. In addition, the vehicle could skid while turning.
Check the surface and the wear of the tyres, because tyres in bad conditions can compromise the grip and the manoeuvrability of the vehicle.
Some kinds of tyres, homologated for this vehicle, are provided with wear indicators. Different wear indicators are available on the market. Ask your Dealer for information about wear checking operations. Visually check the wear of the tyres; change them if they are worn out .
If the tyres are old, even though not completely worn out, they may become hard and impair the roadholding. In this case, have the tyres replaced. Have the tyre replaced if it is worn out or in case of puncture on the tread side, if the puncture is larger than 5 mm. After repairing the tyre, carry on the wheel balancing. Use only tyres having the size suggested by aprilia, see page 70 (TECHNICAL DATA). Do not install tyres with air tube on rims for tubeless tyres and viceversa. Make sure that the inflation valves are always provided with their sealing caps in order to avoid a sudden deflation of the tyres.
