The instructions for use are part of the product.
They contain important information concerning
safety, use and disposal. Before using the product,
please familiarise yourself with all of the safety
information and instructions for use. Only use the
unit as described and for the specified applica­tions. If you pass the product on to anyone else,
please ensure that you also pass on all the
documentation with it.

Intended use

The Ultimate Speed ULGD3.8A1 is a multi-stage
car battery charger that is suitable for charging
and trickle charging up of 6V or 12V lead-acid
batteries (batteries) with electrolyte solution (WET),
electrolyte absorbent mats (AGM) or gel electrolyte
(GEL).

This appliance is not suitable for charging lithium-ion
batteries. The is not intended for commercial use
and is for indoor use only.

The manufacturer accepts no responsibility for
damage(s) arising out of usage contrary to the
instructions specified below.

This charger is suitable for indoor
use only.

■ This appliance may be used by chil-

dren aged 8 over and by persons
with reduced physical, sensory or
mental capabilities or lack of expe­rience and knowledge, provided
that they are under supervision
or have been told how to use the

appliance safely and are aware of
the potential risks. Children must not
use the appliance as a plaything.
Cleaning and user maintenance
tasks may not be carried out by
children unless they are supervised.

■ Do not use the charger for charging

non-rechargeable batteries.

■ Do not use the charger for charging

lithium-ion batteries.

■ Place the removed battery in a well-

ventilated location during charging.

■ The automatic mode of operation

and usage restrictions are explained
below in these operating instruc­tions.

DANGER OF ELECTRIC SHOCK!

■ Do not operate the appliance with

a damaged cable, supply cord or
mains plug. A damaged power cord
causes danger to life by electric shock.

■ If the supply cord is damaged, it must

be replaced by the manufacturer, its
service agent or similarly qualified
persons in order to avoid a hazard.

■ Before connecting to the power,

ensure that the power connection is
earthed, is 230 V ∼ 50 Hz, and is
16 A fused and equipped with an
RCCB switch (residual current circuit
breaker) in accordance with the cur­rent regulations!

■ Always connect the positive termi-

nal clamp (red)

Protect yourself from a highly explo­sive hydrogen-oxygen reaction!

■ Ensure that during charge and

charge retention procedures, there
are no naked lights (flames, cinders
or sparks)!

■ Ensure that the plus cable does not

come into contact with fuel lines
(e.g. petrol pipe)!

■ Ensure that there is no possibility of

ignition of explosive or flammable
substances, such as petrol or sol­vents, while using charger!

■ Ensure that there is adequate venti-

lation during charging.

before you make or break connec­tions to the battery.

DANGER OF CHEMICAL

BURNS!

■ Wear protective glasses! Wear

protective gloves! If eyes or skin has
come into contact with battery acid,
rinse the affected body region off
with a large amount of clean water
and consult a doctor straight away!

■ Avoid causing a short circuit when

connecting the charger to the bat­tery. Connect the negative pole
connector cable only to the nega­tive battery or to the body work.
Connect the positive pole connector
cable only to the plus pole of the
battery!

■ Do not place the charger close to fire,

heat or to places with long-term expo­sure to temperatures over 50 °C!

■ Ensure that no fuel lines,electric

cables, hydraulic or water pipes
are damaged by the screws during
assembly of the charger!

■ Do not cover the charger with any

objects!

■ Protect the electrical contact sur-

faces of the battery from short
circuiting!

■ Only use the charger for charging

and for charge retention of 6 V / 12
V lead batteries.
Do not charge frozen batteries.

Operation

Before use

♦ Before connecting the charger, the operating

instructions must be observed.

♦ Furthermore, the instructions of the vehicle man-

ufacturer regarding a permanently connected
vehicle battery must be observed. Secure the
vehicle, switch off the ignition.

♦ Clean the battery poles. Take care that while doing

so, your eyes do not come into contact with the dirt.

♦ Ensure sufficient ventilation.

Connecting

NOTES

► There are two options for connecting the charger.

Connect the negative terminal connecting cable
(black) either directly to the negative terminal of
the battery or to the bodywork. Please also bear
in mind the vehicle manufacturer’s instructions.

♦ Before starting the charging or trickle charging

procedure on a permanently installed battery in
a vehicle, first disconnect the negative terminal
connecting cable (black) of the vehicle from the
negative terminal of the battery. The negative
terminal of the battery is usually connected to
the vehicle’s coachwork.

♦ Connect the positive pole clamp (red)

charger to the positive pole of the battery.

♦ Connect the negative pole clamp (black)

♦ Connect the mains cable of the charger to

the mains socket.

♦ The battery voltage display shows the cur-

rent battery voltage.

♦ Should the connection of the clamps be swapped,

Measuring STANDBY /
Battery voltage

After connection to the grid, the appliance is on
STANDBY. The standby display lights up. When
the clamps are connected, the battery voltage is
shown in the LCD (voltage display

If the voltage is below 3.8 V or above 15 V, the
battery will not be charged. The display briefly
shows the error message „Err“.
The appliance goes on standby.

6 V battery:

If the voltage range of the battery is measured
as between 3.7–7.3 V, only program 1 can be
selected.

12 V batteries:

If a battery is recognised in the critical voltage
range of between 7.3–10.5 V, the appliance
checks whether a fully charged 6 V battery, or a
discharged 12 V battery is present. After pressing
the program selection button
the appliance carries out a control measurement
for about 90 sec.

NOTES

► If a battery is detected in the voltage range of

between 3.7–7.3 V, the programmes 2–3–4
can not be selected. The charging process takes
place automatically. Depending on the selected
program, the characteristic charge curve is
monitored for voltage, time and temperature.
Included are the diagnostics program, revitalis­ing mode and retention charge.

For charging 6 V batteries with a capacity of less
than 14 Ah.

♦ Press the program selection button

the LCD. During charging, the charge display
flashes and shows the progress of the charge
procedure (1–4 bars). When the battery is fully
charged, the condition display shows 4 bars.
The flashing stops and the appliance automati­cally switches to retention charge.

If after about 90 sec. between 7.3–7.5 V are
detected, the 12 V battery is defective.

The appliance goes on standby.

Revitalising

If after about 90 sec. between 7.5–10.5 V are
detected, a 12 V battery is present.

Charging starts with a pulse charge for revitalis­ing. The voltage display flashes. Once 10.5 V
are reached, the appliance switches to the other
charge steps.
Revitalising is the same for all the 12 V charge
programmes.

for charging AGM batteries.

Retention charge

As described under programmes, this appliance
features the automatic retention charge. Depending
on the voltage drop of the battery, caused by
selfdischarge, the appliance reacts with different
charge currents.
The battery can remain connected to the charger
for longer periods of time.

Appliance protection function

The charger switches the electronics off and switches
the system instantly to the basic setting, as soon as
there is an abnormal situation, such as short circuit,
critical voltage drop during charging, broken circuit
or swapped connection of the connector clamps is
detected.
Should the appliance become too hot during charg­ing, the output current is automatically reduced. This
protects the appliance from damage.

Maintenance and care

WARNING! Before you carry out any

work on the battery charger always
pull the mains plug out of the mains
socket.

The appliance is maintenance-free.

♦ Do not under any circumstances use solvents or

other aggressive cleaning agents.

♦ Clean the plastic surfaces of the device with a

dry cloth.

Warranty

The warranty for this appliance is for 3 years
from the date of purchase. The appliance has
been manufactured with care and meticulously
examined before delivery. Please retain your
receipt as proof of purchase. In the event of
a warranty claim, please make contact by
telephone with our Service Department. Only
in this way can a post-free despatch for your
goods be assured.

The warranty covers only claims for material and
manufacturing defects, but not for transport dam­age, for wearing parts or for damage to fragile
components, e.g. buttons or batteries. This product
is for private use only and is not intended for com­mercial use. The warranty is void in the case of
abusive and improper handling, use of force and
internal tampering not carried out by our author­ized service branch. Your statutory rights are not
restricted in any way by this warranty. The warranty
period will not be extended by repairs made under
warranty. This applies also to replaced and repaired
parts. Any damage and defects extant on purchase
must be reported immediately after unpacking the
appliance, at the latest, two days after the purchase
date. Repairs made after the expiration of the war­ranty period are subject to payment.

■ Irrota laturi sähköverkosta lataa-

misen jälkeen. Irrota vasta sitten

liität laturia akkuun. Liitä miinusna­van liitäntäkaapeli ainoastaan akun
miinusnapaan tai ajoneuvon run­koon. Liitä plusnavan liitäntäkaapeli
ainoastaan akun plusnapaan!

■ Älä altista laturia tulen tai kuu-

muuden läheisyydelle tai pitkään
kestävälle, yli 50 °C:n lämpövaiku­tukselle!

■ Varo laturia asentaessasi vahingoit-

Ennen käyttöönottoa

♦ Tutustu akun käyttöohjeeseen ennen laturin

liittämistä.

♦ Jos akku on jatkuvasti liitettynä ajoneuvoon,

huomioi myös ajoneuvovalmistajan määräykset.
Varmista auto, kytke virta pois päältä.

♦ Puhdista akkunavat. Varo, ettei likaa joudu

silmiin.

♦ Pidä huoli riittävästä tuuletuksesta.

Liittäminen

OHJE

► Laturi voidaan liittää kahdella tavalla. Miinus-

navan liitäntäkaapeli (musta) voidaan liittää
suoraan akun miinusnapaan tai vaihtoeh­toisesti ajoneuvon runkoon. Noudata lisäksi
ajoneuvon valmistajan määräyksiä.

♦ Jos akku on jatkuvasti liitettynä ajoneuvoon, irrota

ennen latausta ja ylläpitolatausta ajoneuvon
miinusnavan liitäntäkaapeli (musta) akun mii­nusnavasta. Akun miinusnapa on yleensä liitetty
ajoneuvon runkoon.

♦ Liitä laturin plusnapaliitin (punainen)

plusnapaan.

♦ Liitä miinusnapaliitin (musta)

tai ajoneuvon runkoon.

♦ Liitä tätä varten laturin verkkojohto
♦ Akun jännitenäyttö

VALMIUSTILA /
akkujännitteen mittaus

Virtalähteeseen liittämisen jälkeen laite on VALMIUS­tilassa. Valmiustilan merkkivalo palaa. Kun liittimet
on liitettynä, akkujännite näytetään LC-näytössä
(jännitenäyttö

Jos mitattu jännite on alle 3,8 V tai yli 15 V,
akku ei lataudu. Näytössä näkyy lyhyesti
virheilmoitus "Err". Laite kytkeytyy valmiustilaan.

6 V:n akku:

Jos akun mitattu jännite on jännitealueella 3,7–
7,3 V, valittavana on ainoastaan ohjelma 1.

12 V:n akut:

Jos akun havaitaan olevan 7,3–10,5 V:n kriittisellä
jännitealueella, laite tarkastaa, onko kyse täyteen
ladatusta 6 V:n akusta vai purkautuneesta 12 V:n
akusta. Valitse ohjelma painamalla ohjelmanvalin­tapainiketta
mittauksen. Näytössä näkyy:

Jos jännite n. 90 s:n jälkeen on alueella 7,3–7,5 V,
12 V:n akku on viallinen.

Ohjelmien valitseminen

OHJE

► Jos laite havaitsee 3,7–7,3 V:n jännitealueel-

la olevan akun, ei voida valita ohjelmat 2, 3
ja 4. Lataus etenee automaattisesti. Valitusta
ohjelmasta riippuen latauskäyrää valvotaan
jännitteen, ajan ja lämpötilan mukaan.
Mukana diagnoosiohjelma, elvytystila ja
ylläpitolataus.

Lataustapahtuman aikana latausnäyttö vilkkuu

ja näyttää, kuinka pitkälle lataustapahtuma on

edistynyt (1–4 palkkia). Kun akku on ladattu

täyteen, tilanäytössä näkyy 4 palkkia. Vilkku-

minen loppuu ja laite kytkeytyy automaattisesti

ylläpitolataukselle.

Elvyttäminen

Jos jännite n. 90 s:n jälkeen on alueella 7,5–10,5 V,
kyse on 12 V:n akusta. Latausprosessi alkaa pulssi­käytöllä elvytystä varten.

Jännitenäyttö vilkkuu. Kun 10,5 V on saavutettu,
laite kytkeytyy seuraaviin latausvaiheisiin.
Elvyttäminen tapahtuu samalla tavalla kaikissa
12 V:n latausohjelmissa.

Kapasiteetiltaan alle 14 Ah:n, 12 V:n akkujen
lataamiseen.
