Note
To prevent damage to the toner cartridge, do not expose it to light for more than a few minutes.
Rotate the cartridge and gently

Note
If the tab separates from the tape, grasp the tape and pull it out of the cartridge.
6
Note
If toner gets on your clothing, wipe it off with a dry cloth and wash clothing in cold water. (Hot water sets toner into fabric.)

Note
The paper size setting is set to a default size at the factory. The default for the United States is letter-size, while in Europe it is A4. If you would like to use a different default paper size, reconfigure the paper tray setting.
Open Tray 2 until it stops.
1
Remove the packing spacer and
2
tape. If you wish to load paper that is
3
different than the default size, turn the paper guide to the mark that indicates the size of paper you are loading.

appropriate lines marked in the tray. Press the guide into the rear slot and then lower down into the front slot. Be sure the guide is not skewed.
7 Insert up to 500 sheets of paper into
the tray. Do not fill the input tray above the paper fill marks on the guide
Note
For single-sided printing, place the side to be printed facing down. For doublesided printing, the front side should be facing up.
8 Make sure the paper size tab is set
correctly. 9 Slide the tray back into the printer. If you wish to select your paper by type
rather than tray (source), see y our online user guide.
12 Printer Setup
If you wish to print on paper sizes larger than letter or A4, adjust the paper stop guide on the Standard Output Bin. (See your online user guide for instructions.)
Note
If paper curls or skews excessively during printing, open the tray and turn the stack of paper over. T o a v oid a paper jam, never open the tr a y while it is in use .
EN
Step 8 Load Tray 1 (Optional)
1
Tray 1 is a multi-purpose tray and holds up to 100 sheets of paper or 10 envelopes.
Tray 1 provides a conv enient wa y to print envelopes, transparencies, custom-size paper, labels, or other types of media without having to unload the other trays.
CAUTION
To avoid a paper jam, never add or remove paper from Tray 1 while the printer is printing. To avoid damaging the printer, print labels and transparencies from Tray 1 only. Send them to the Top Output Bin, do not print them on both sides, and remove them promptly.
Note
Paper loaded in Tray 1 will be printed first unless the Tray 1 setting is changed from the printer control panel. To change the order in which trays will be printed from, see your online user guide.
EN
Open Tray 1.
1
Pull out the tray ex tension, if needed
2
for the paper size you are printing.
Slide the paper width guides to the
3
appropriate size marked on the tray.
Place paper into the tray without
4
stacking it above the paperfill mark.
Continued on next page.
Load Tray 1 (Optional)
13
Note
For single-sided printing, place paper into the tray with the side-to-be-printed up. The top of the page (letterhead, for example) should be placed toward the rear of the printer. For tw o-sided printing, place paper with the front side down. For prepunched paper, always load with the holes toward the rear of the printer.
5 Load letter or A4 paper with the
longer edge of the page leading into
the printer. 6 Load envelopes, Executive, Legal,
11 x 17, ISO A3, JIS B5, or JIS B4
with the short edge of the page
leading into the printer.
Note
2
Paper heavier than 28 lb (105 g/m

Step 14 Install Printing Software
The printer comes with printing software on a compact disc. The printer drivers on this compact disc must be installed to take full advantage of the printer features. If your computer does not have a CD-ROM drive, but y ou ha v e access to one, y ou can copy the printing software from the compact disc onto diskettes for installation on your computer.
If you do not have access to a CD-ROM drive, a diskette is provided with the basic printer drivers. (The diskette does not have all of the software available on the compact disc.) The most recent drivers are availab le on the Internet. Depending on the configuration of Windowsdriven computers, the installation program for the printer software automatically checks the computer for Internet access to obtain the latest software.
See the HP Support pages at the front of the printer user guide and the Readme file on the diskette for additional information or to order diskettes if you do not have Internet access.

Step 15 Install Online User Guide
This printer comes with a CD-ROM that contains an online user guide. In fact, it contains copies of the user guide translated in many languages. The user guide contains useful information for using the HP LaserJet 8100 series printers, as well as additional troubleshooting and customer support information. This user guide requires Adobe Acrobat Reader 3.0 (or later versions) for viewing. If the system to which the printer is connected already has Adobe Acrobat Reader installed, skip step 1 and go to step 2 of the installation process.
Step 1: Installing Adobe Acrobat Reader

Step 16 Attach Holder for Ready Reference Guide
CAUTION
The Document Holder will be very difficult to remove once it is mounted; therefore, damage to the Document Holder or the mounting surface might occur during removal.
The Document Holder can be mounted on any flat, smooth surface. For example, mount the Document Holder on the exterior of a printer where the Document Holder does not span across two panels and does not obstruct cooling vents, access doors, or installed accessories (including those that might be installed in the future).
Clean the mounting surface with the alcohol wipe included in the

package. Once the mounting surface is dry, peel the tape off of the four

adhesive strips located on the back of the Document Holder. Position the Document Holder so that the open side is on top and

the adhesive strips are lightly touching the mounting surface. Press firmly on the Document Holder and apply even pressure to

Step 17 Verify Printer Setup
The easiest way to verify that the installation has been completed successfully is to print a document from a software application.

simple document.
2 Make sure the correct printer name appears. 3 Print the document.
If the document prints, installation is complete. If nothing prints or if the document does not print correctly, see the problem solving chapter in the printer’s online user guide.
