Electrostatically Sensitive (ES) Devices. Examples of typical ES devices are integrated circuits and some field effect transistors and
semiconductor "chip" components.
The following techniques should be used to help reduce the incidence of component damage caused by static electricity.
1. Immediately before handling any semiconductor component or semiconductor-equipped assembly, drain off any electrostatic charge on
your body by touching a known earth ground. Alternatively, obtain and wear a commercially available discharging wrist strap device,
which should be removed for potential shock reasons prior to applying power to the unit under test.
2. After removing an electrical assembly equipped with ES devices, place the assembly on a conductive surface such as aluminum foil, to
prevent electrostatic charge build-up or exposure of the assembly.
3. Use only a grounded-tip soldering iron to solder or unsolder ES devices.
4. Use only an anti-static solder removal device. Some solder removal devices not classified as "anti-static" can generate electrical charges
sufficient to damage ES devices.
5. Do not use freon-propelled chemicals. These can generate electrical change sufficient to damage ES devices.
6. Do not remove a replacement ES device from its protective package until immediately before you are ready to install it. (Most replacement
ES devices are packaged with leads electrically shorted together by conductive foam, aluminum foil or comparable conductive material.)
7. Immediately before removing the protective material from the leads of a replacement ES device, touch the protective material to the
chassis or circuit assembly into which the device will be installed.
CAUTION :
8. Minimize bodily motions when handling unpackaged replacement ES devices. (Otherwise harmless motion such as the brushing together
or your clothes fabric or the lifting of your foot from a carpeted floor can generate static electricity sufficient to damage an ES devices.

Processor Reset
In the rare case where the unit’s operation or the displays seem abnormal, the cause may involve the erratic operation of the system’s memory or microprocessor.
To correct this problem, first unplug the unit from the AC wall outlet and wait at least three minutes. After the pause, reconnect the AC power cord and check the unit’s operation. If the system still malfunctions, a system reset may clear the problem.
To clear the AVR’s entire system memory including tuner presets, output level settings, delay times and speaker configuration data, first put the unit in Standby by pressing the System Power Control button the Tone Mode button then release the button.
The unit will turn on automatically. Note that once you have cleared the memory in this manner, it is necessary to re- establish all system configuration settings and tuner presets.

NOTE: Resetting the processor will erase any configuration settings you have made for speakers, output levels, surround modes, digital input assignments as well as the tuner presets. After a reset the unit will be returned to the factory presets, and all settings for these items must be reentered.
If the system is still operating incorrectly, there may have been an electronic discharge or severe AC line interference that has corrupted the memory or microprocessor.
If these steps do not solve the problem, consult an authorized Harman Kardon service depot.

Erase a macro as follows:
1. Simultaneously press and hold the Mute Button and the Macro Button containing the macro until the LED flashes.
2. Press the Surround Button to erase the macro.
Resetting the Remote
To reset the remote to its factory defaults, simultaneously press and hold any Input Selector and the “0” Numeric Key. When the Program LED flashes in amber, enter the code “333”. When the green LED goes out, the remote will have been fully reset.
Processor Reset
There may be instances when you wish to fully reset the AVR 154 to its factory defaults, or the unit may behave erratically after a power surge. To correct erratic behavior, first try turning the Master Power Switch off and unplugging the AC power cord for at least three minutes. Plug the cord back in and turn the receiver back on. If this doesn’t help, try a system reset.
NOTES:
A system reset erases all user configurations, including video resolution, speaker and level settings, and tuner presets. After a reset, you will need to reenter all of these settings.
To reset the AVR 154, place the receiver in Standby mode (press the front­panel Standby/On Switch so that the Power Indicator turns amber). Press and hold the front-panel Surround Mode Button for 5 to 10 seconds until the RESET message appears in the display.
Follow the directions in the owner’s manual on page 32 to restore the picture if necessary.
Memory
If the AVR 154 is unplugged or experiences a power outage, it will retain user settings for up to four weeks.

DEVICE OPERATION
The device supports the I2C protocol. This is sum­marized in Figure 5.. Any device that sends d ata on to the bus is defined to b e a transmitter, and any device that reads the data to be a r eceiver. The device that controls the data transfer is known as the bus master, an d the ot her a s the sl ave de ­vice. A data transfer can only be initiated by the bus master, which will also provide the serial clock for synchr oniz atio n. Th e M24C xx de vice is alwa ys a slave in all communication.
Start Condition
Start is identified by a falling edge of Serial Data (SDA) while Serial Clock (SCL) is stable in the High state. A Start condition must precede any data transfer command . The device continuou sly monitors (except during a Write cycle) Serial Data (SDA) and Serial Clock (SCL) for a Start condition, and will not respond unless one is given.
Stop Condition
Stop is identified by a rising edge of Serial Data (SDA) while Serial Cloc k (S CL) is s tab le a nd d ri v­en High. A Stop condition t ermi nate s co mm uni ca ­tion between the device and the bus master. A Read command that is followed by NoA ck can be followed by a Sto p condition to force the device into the Stand-by mode. A S top condition at the end of a Write command triggers the internal Write cycle.
Acknowledge Bit (ACK)
The acknowledge bit is used to indicate a success­ful byte transfer. The bus transmitter, whether it be bus master or sl ave device, releas es Serial Data (SDA) after sending ei ght bits of da ta. During the

Data (SDA) Low to acknowledge the receipt of the eight data bits.

Memory Addressing
To start communica tion between the bus master and the slave device, the b us mas ter m u st ini tia te a Start condition. Following this, the bus master sends the Device Select Code, shown in Table 3. (on Serial Data (SDA), most significant bit first).
The Device Select Code consists of a 4-bit Device Type Identifier, and a 3-bit Chip Enable “Address” (E2, E1, E0). To address the memory array, the 4­bit Device Type Identifier is 1010b.
Up to eight memory devices can be connected on a single I

C bus. Each one is gi ven a un ique 3-bit code on the Chip Enable (E0, E1, E2) inputs. When the Device Select Code is received, the de­vice only respond s if the Chip Enabl e Address is the same as the value on the Chip Enable (E0, E1, E2) inputs.

The 8
bit is the Read/Write bit (RW). This bit is
set to 1 for Read and 0 for Write operations. If a match occurs on the Device Select code, the
corresponding device gives an acknowledgment on Serial Data (SDA) du ri ng the 9

bit time. If the device does not match the Device Select code, it deselects itself from the bus, and goes into Stand­by mode.
