1. Slide off the battery cover.
2. Insert the battery so that the connectors align.

Charge the battery

1. Connect the smaller end of the USB cable to the BlackBerry Smart Card Reader.
2. Connect the larger end of the USB cable to an available USB port on your computer.

About the BlackBerry Smart Card Reader driver

The BlackBerry Smart Card Reader driver is preinstalled on the BlackBerry Smart Card Reader.

Install the BlackBerry Smart Card Reader driver on your BlackBerry device

1. Close the BlackBerry Desktop Software if it is open.
2. Download the .exe file for the BlackBerry Smart Card Reader software from www.blackberry.com/ products/accessories/smartcard.shtml.
3. After the download is complete, double-click the file on your computer.
4. Complete the on-screen instructions.
5. Connect your BlackBerry device to your computer.
6. On the taskbar, click Start > Programs > BlackBerry >
Desktop > Desktop Manager.

7. Double-click the Application Loader icon.
8. Click Next.
9. Select the BlackBerry Smart Card Reader check box.
10. Click Next.
11 . Click Finish.

Update the BlackBerry Smart Card Reader driver on your BlackBerry Smart Card Reader

See “View BlackBerry Smart Card Reader status information” on page 13 for more information about checking the version number of the software that is currently installed on your BlackBerry Smart Card Reader.
You must reset the BlackBerry Smart Card Reader before you update the driver. BlackBerry Smart Card Reader” on page 8 for more information.
1. Close the BlackBerry Desktop Software if it is open.

Turn on or turn off the Bluetooth radio

To turn on the Bluetooth radio, on the BlackBerry Smart Card Reader, press the Action button.
To turn off the Bluetooth radio, on the BlackBerry Smart Card Reader, press and hold the Action button.

Reset the BlackBerry Smart Card Reader

With the Bluetooth radio off, press and hold the Action button. “rEsetInG” appears on the screen. Bluetooth pairing information and the secure pairing key are cleared from the BlackBerry Smart Card Reader.

Display the Bluetooth address

On the BlackBerry Smart Card Reader, press the Action button.

About pairing

Pairing can occur in the following situations:
initializing two-factor authentication
processing two-factor authentication

importing smart card certificates
performing private key operations, such as sending a signed or a signed and encrypted message, or opening an encrypted or signed and encrypted message

Pair with a BlackBerry device

1. On the BlackBerry Smart Card Reader, press the Action button.
2. On the BlackBerry device, click Options.
3. Click Bluetooth.
4. On the BlackBerry Smart Card Reader, press the Action button.
5. On the BlackBerry device, click the trackwheel.
6. Click Add Device.
7. Click Smart Card Reader.
8. In the Enter passkey for BlackBerry Smart Card Reader field, type the passkey that appears on your BlackBerry Smart Card Reader.

9. Press the Enter key.
10. Perform one of the following actions:
• If you are running BlackBerry device software
version 4.0 or 4.0.2, in your BlackBerry device options, click BlackBerry Smart Card Reader.
• If you are running BlackBerry device software
version 4.1, in your BlackBerry device options, click Security Options. Click Smart Card. Under Registered Reader Drivers, click BlackBerry. Click Driver Settings.
11 . On the BlackBerry Smart Card Reader, press the
Action button.
12 . Type the secure pairing key that appears on the
BlackBerry Smart Card Reader.
13 . Press the Enter key. Notes: After the first time that you pair your BlackBerry
Smart Card Reader and your BlackBerry device, pairing is designed to initiate automatically whenever a connection is required.

You are prompted when Bluetooth pairing exists but secure pairing is not complete, such as when secure pairing expires. On the BlackBerry device, type the secure pairing key that appears on the BlackBerry Smart Card Reader. Press the Enter key. On the BlackBerry Smart Card Reader, click the Action button.

Clear the secure pairing key

1. Perform one of the following actions:
• If you are running BlackBerry device software
version 4.0 or 4.0.2, in your BlackBerry device options, click BlackBerry Smart Card Reader.
• If you are running BlackBerry device software
version 4.1, in your BlackBerry device options, click Security Options. Click Smart Card. Under Registered Reader Drivers, click BlackBerry. Click Driver Settings.
2. Click Re-key. You are prompted to type the new secure pairing key.
3. On the BlackBerry Smart Card Reader, press the Action button.

4. On your BlackBerry device, type the number that appears on the BlackBerry Smart Card Reader.

View BlackBerry Smart Card Reader status information

1. Perform one of the following actions:
• If you are running BlackBerry device software
version 4.0 or 4.0.2, in your BlackBerry device options, click BlackBerry Smart Card Reader.
• If you are running BlackBerry device software
version 4.1, in your BlackBerry device options, click Security Options. Click Smart Card. Under Registered Reader Drivers, click BlackBerry. Click Driver Settings.
2. View the following status information:

IT Policy Name: specifies the name of the IT policy
that is applied to the BlackBerry Smart Card Reader
Policies Match: specifies whether the IT policy
that is applied to the BlackBerry Smart Card Reader matches the IT policy on the BlackBerry device
Cryptographic Kernel: specifies the version of the
cryptographic kernel that is running on the BlackBerry Smart Card Reader
Application Version: specifies the version of the
BlackBerry Smart Card Reader driver that is installed on the BlackBerry Smart Card Reader
Platform Version: specifies the version of the
operating system on the BlackBerry Smart Card Reader
Transaction Count: specifies the number of
transactions that have been completed during the current pairing

Set Bluetooth connection options

1. Perform one of the following actions:
• If you are running BlackBerry device software
version 4.0 or 4.0.2, in your BlackBerry device options, click BlackBerry Smart Card Reader.
• If you are running BlackBerry device software
version 4.1, in your BlackBerry device options, click Security Options. Click Smart Card. Under Registered Reader Drivers, click BlackBerry. Click Driver Settings.
2. Set the following options:
Connection Heart Beat Period: Set the maximum
connection heart beat period. Each period, the BlackBerry sends a signal (heart beat) that is acknowledged by the BlackBerry Smart Card Reader. If the heart beat is missed by either the BlackBerry device or the BlackBerry Smart Card Reader, the Bluetooth connection stops.
Disconnected Timeout: Specify the period of time
that passes after a Bluetooth connection ends before pairing information is cleared.

Long Term Timeout: Specify the period of time
that passes before pairing information is cleared.
Inactivity Timeout: Specify the period of idle time
that passes before pairing information is cleared.
Card Not Present Timeout: Specify the period of
time that passes after the smart card is removed before pairing information is cleared.
Number Of Transactions: Specify the number of
transactions that occur before pairing information is cleared.
Power Off Timeout: Specify the period of time that
passes without a Bluetooth connection before the BlackBerry Smart Card Reader is turned off.
Maximum Bluetooth Range: Specify the power
level for the Bluetooth radio on the BlackBerry Smart Card Reader. The power level ranges between 0 and 7, with 0 being the lowest power setting (shortest range).
Power Saving Mode: Specify the activity level of
the Bluetooth radio on the BlackBerry Smart Card Reader. In Full mode, the BlackBerry Smart Card

Reader is only active when performing smart card operations such as importing certificates. In Disabled mode, the BlackBerry Smart Card Reader is always active. In Partial mode, the BlackBerry Smart Card Reader is active when it is unlocked. Higher activity levels improve the performance of operations but use more battery power than lower activity levels.
3. Click the trackwheel.
4. Click Save.
