Long-Term Data Storage Capability
NEC Storage HS8 can safely store data that needs to be stored over the long term,
even decades. If you switch from an old node to a new one, data is automatically
migrated to the new node. By replacing old nodes, one after another, you can
avoid problems with aging hardware, and can store data over the long term. This

greatly reduces costs, relative to creating a whole new system and then migrating
data, and also results in an excellent return on investment (ROI).
Reduced Operating Costs Through Disk-Based Backup
With NEC's unique high data compression technology, backup data is compressed, on
average, to one-twentieth of its original size*. By improving efficiency in this way, per-unit
capacity costs, lower than those of tape, can be achieved. Furthermore, the manual work of
replacing the media for tape-based backup is eliminated, as are the costs associated with
storing tapes, while the expense of the lines required for remote backup is reduced. Thus,
the costs associated with backup can be reduced in a comprehensive manner.

Highly Reliable Data Protection
With its Distributed Resilient Data, NEC Storage HS8 achieves a level of robustness capable of tolerating
simultaneous faults on three disk drives, and with its automatic recovery function, rebuild processing is done
promptly. With these advanced technologies, HS8 minimizes the risk of data loss, achieving a high level of
reliability surpassing that of RAID6. HS8 also offers an encryption function for preventing data leakage, a
falsification prevention function for protecting data from malicious falsification and erroneous operation, and
a function for completely erasing unnecessary data from an area in such a way that it cannot be restored.

To store day-to-day backup/archive data efciently and safely, NEC Storage HS8 incorporates three core technologies.
Easy, Non-Disruptive Expansion of Capacity and Performance
If you want to add more capacity and improve the level of
performance, you can easily add Hybrid Nodes and Storage
Nodes without stopping the system. When connected to an
internal network, added nodes are autonomously incorporated
into the storage pool, so that load balancing and data relocation
can be performed automatically and thus make the nodes
usable instantaneously, without requiring the storage
administrator to consider the data storage position or perform
any kind of configuration. This makes it possible to increase the
capacity and performance without having to worry about the
occurrence of bottlenecks, thereby contributing to improved
operational efficiency and simplified system administration.

Falsication Prevention for Data Protection
NEC Storage HS8 provides a Write Once Read Many
(
WORM) feature, which protects data from illegal
falsification and erroneous operation. You can specify
a protection period for each file, and once that
protection has been set, even the administrator cannot
update the file until the set period has ended. A
protected file can be deleted after the protection
period has ended. Even when replication is applied,
the WORM protection will be inherited, so the data at
the backup site is also protected. Also provided is a
function for completely erasing unnecessary data from
an area in such a way that it cannot be restored.

Vastly Improved Capacity Efciency for Reduced Cost
The data compression technology
(DataRedux) checks the data blocks to be
newly written against data that is already in
storage, and then eliminates any duplicate
data, thereby improving the data storage
efficiency and writing performance.
To maximize the detection of duplication
relative to the existing data, DataRedux
applies intelligent variable-length division to
the data. This achieves a further improvement
in the storage efficiency and performance for,
specifically, multi-generation backup.
Data Compression
Fault Tolerance that Surpasses RAID
NEC Storage HS8 offers a high level of
redundancy surpassing that of conventional
storage. By dividing the backup data into
multiple blocks, adding special parities to
those blocks, and then distributing them to
disks on multiple nodes, NEC Storage HS8
enables data restoration even if faults occur
in multiple storage locations. It can
accommodate up to 6 simultaneous faults
not only with disk drives but also with nodes*,
preventing data loss if a fault should occur.

Synthetic Backup for Increased Efciency
As the amount of data increases, backup takes
more time. NEC Storage HS8 eliminates the need
for conventional regular full backup, and instead
requires only incremental backups. Once you have
performed one full backup, you subsequently only
have to make daily incremental backups, and a full
backup is automatically synthesized internally at
high speed.
This greatly reduces the time required for backup.
Encrypted Replication Packets
NEC Storage HS8 encrypts the replication
packets, providing higher security than
conventional systems and protecting user
data from being tapped into by third parties.
NEC Storage HS8 lets you specify whether
to enable or disable encryption for each
remote system, so you can select whether to
apply encryption according to your
environment. The encryption method used is
AES* (256 bits), which is highly regarded for
its safety and is commonly used in the
storage industry.

The media management and tape replacement of tape-based
operations demand a large staff and considerable amounts of labor,
while tape transportation and storage are costly. Furthermore, as
the amount of data increases, tape-based operation will become
more and more cumbersome. These issues with tape operation
can be solved by NEC Storage HS8. Through the application of
deduplication, NEC Storage HS8 can store large amounts of data
with a high degree of efficiency, eliminating the need for tape
storage space. Because the operation is automated, the amount of

discouraged by the potential cost. NEC Storage HS8, through
the use of its deduplication feature, achieves low-cost and
secure remote backup. Data is transferred only after
deduplication, so that it can be transmitted over a low-cost

rapidly, including backups of accounting data and archives of
e-mails to and from customers and business partners. NEC Storage
HS8 lets you increase your storage capacity easily as the amount of
data grows, thanks to its "automatic optimal configuration". Because
of its "Distributed Resilient Data", NEC Storage HS8 provides safe,
long-term storage for your data. Data is automatically migrated from
a node that has reached the end of its service life to a new node.
This makes it possible to replace old nodes with new nodes one at a
time, without inconveniencing the users of the system, at much less
