System Installation
Afterunpackingtheunit, and placingit on a solid surfacecapableof supportingitsweight, youwill needto makethe connectionsto youraudioand videoequipment.
IMPORTANTNOTE:Foryourpersonalsafety andto avoidpossibledamageto yourequipment andspeakers,it isalwaysgoodpracticeto turn off andunplugtheAVRandALLsourceequip- mentfromtheACoutputbeforemakingany audioor videosystemconnections.
Audio Equipment Connections
Werecommendthat you usehigh-qualityinter- connectcaneswhenmakingconnectionsto
sourceequipmentandrecordersto preservethe integrityof the signals.
1.Connecttheanalogoutput ofa CDplayerto
the CDInputs _.
NOTE:When the CDplayerhasbothfixedand variableaudiooutputs,it is bestto usethe fixed output unlessyoufind that the input to the
receiverissolow that the soundisnoisy, orso high that the signalis distorted.
2. Connectthe analogPlay/Outjacksof a cas- settedeck,MD,CD-Ror otheraudiorecorderto the TapeInput Jacks I_. Connectthe analog Record/Injackson the recorderto the Tape Output JacksO onthe AVR520.

adaptersuppliedwith the unitto makethecon- nection.
7. Connectthefront, centerandsurround speakeroutputs _ _ @ to the respective
speakers.
Toensurethat all the audio signalsarecarried to yourspeakerswithout lossof clarityor reso-
lution,we suggestthat youusehigh-quality speakercable.Manybrandsof cableare avail- ableandthe choiceofcablemaybe influenced bythe distancebetweenyourspeakersand the receiver, thetypeof speakersyouuse, personal
preferencesand other factors.Yourdealeror installerisavaluableresourceto consultin
selectingthepropercable.
Regardlessofthe brandof cableselected,we recommendthat youusea cableconstructedof
multistrandcopperwith agaugeof 14or smaller. Rememberthat in specifyingcable, thelower
the number,thethickerthe cable.
Cablewith a gaugeof 16 maybeusedfor short runsof lessthantenfeet.Wedo not recom-
mendthat youusecableswith anAWGequiva- lentof 18or higher, due to the powerlossand degradationin performancethatwill occur.

When connecting wires to the speakers, be cer-
tain to observe proper polarity. Note that the
positive (+) terminal of each speaker connection now carries a specific color code as noted on page 11. However, most speakers will still use a red terminal for the postive (+) connection. Connect the "negative" or "black" wire to the
same terminal on both the receiver and the speaker.
NOTE:Whilemostspeakermanufacturers adhereto an industryconventionof usingblack
terminalsfor negativeandredonesfor positive,
somemanufacturersmayvaryfromthis config- uration.Toensureproperphaseandoptimal performance, consultthe identificationplateon yourspeakerorthe speaker'smanualto verify polarity.Ifyou do not know the polarityof your speaker, askyour dealerfor advicebeforepro- ceeding,or consultthe speaker'smanufacturer.
We alsorecommendthat the length of cable
usedto connectspeakerpairs beidentical. For example, usethe samelength pieceof cable to connectthe front-left and front-right or surround-left and surround-rightspeakers, evenif the speakersarea different distance
from the AVR 520.
8. Connectionsto a subwooferarenormally
madevia aline-levelaudioconnectionfrom the
Subwoofer Output i_ to the line-levelinput of a subwooferwith a built-inamplifier.Whena
passivesubwooferis used,theconnectionfirst goesto a poweramplifier,whichwill becon-
nectedto oneor moresubwooferspeakers. If youareusinga poweredsubwooferthat does
not haveline-levelinputconnections,followthe
instructionsfurnishedwith the speakerfor con-
nectioninformation.
9. If anexternalmulti-channelaudiosource with 5.1outputssuchasan externaldigital
processor/decoder,DVD-Audioor SACDplayer
isused, connecttheoutputsof that deviceto the 6-Channel Direct Inputs _.
10. If an externalmulti-channelaudiosource

isused, first connectthe outputsof that device to boththe 6 ChannelDirectInputsasnoted above, andthen connectthe SurroundBackLeft andSurroundBackRightoutput channelsof
the sourcedevicetothe 8-Channel Direct

11. If a 7.1 channel source device is connected
as noted in the item above, you must use an optional audio power amplifier for those chan-
nels. Connect the SBL and SBR Preamp Outputs _ to the inputs of the amplifier feeding those channels' speakers.

TheAVR520 will accepteitherstandard
composite,S-VideoorY/Pr/Pbcomponent
video signals. However, it will not convert composite or Ssignals to component video.
Component or composite video signals may only be viewed in their native formats.
System and Power Connections
The AVR 520 is designed for flexible use with
multiroom systems, external control compo- nents and power amplifiers.
Main Room Remote Control Extension If the receiver is placed behind a solid or
smoked glass cabinet door, the obstruction may
prevent the remote sensor from receiving com- mands. In this event, an optional remote sensor may be used. Connect the output of the remote
sensor to the Remote IR Input jack _.
Ifother componentsarealsopreventedfrom receivingremotecommands, onlyone sensoris needed.Simplyusethis unit's sensorora remoteeyeby runninga connectionfromthe Remote IR Output jack _ to the RemoteIR Inputjack on HarmanKardonor other compati- bleequipment.
Multiroom IR Link
The remote room IRreceivershould be connected to the AVR 520 via standard coaxial cable. Plug
the IRconnection cable into the Multiroom IR
Input jack 1_ on the AVR 520's rear panel.
If other Harman Kardon compatible source equipment is part of the main room installation, the Remote IR Output jack _) on the rear
panel should beconnected to the IR INjack on source equipment. This will enable the remote
room location to control source equipment func- tions.
NOTE:Allremotelycontrolledcomponents
mustbe linkedtogetherin a "daisy chain".
Connectthe IR OUT jackof one unit to the IR
IN of the nextto establishthis chain.
Multiroom Audio Connections
Depending on the distance from the AVR 520 to the remote room, two options are available
for audio connection:
Option 1: Usehigh-quality,shieldedaudio
interconnectcablefrom the AVR520'slocation to the remoteroom.Inthe remoteroom,con-
nectthe interconnectcableto a stereopower amplifier.Theamplifierwill be connectedto the
room'sspeakers.At theAVR520,plugthe audiointerconnectcablesintothe Multiroom
Output JacksO onthe AVR520'srearpanel.
Option 2: Connectthe Multiroom Output JacksO onthe AVR520to the inputs of an
optionalstereopoweramplifier.Runhigh-quali- ty speakerwirefrom the amplifierto the speak-
ersin the remoteroom.
NOTE:In bothoptions,youmayconnectan optionalIRsensorinthe remoteroomto the
AVR520via anappropriatecable.Connectthe sensor'scableto the Multiroom IR Input i_
onthe AVR520andusethe Zone IIremoteto controlthe roomvolume.Alternatively, youmay
installan optionalvolumecontrol betweenthe output ofthe amplifiersandthe speakers.
ACPower Connections Thisunit isequippedwithtwo accessoryAC
outlets.Theymaybeusedto poweraccessory devices, but they shouldnot beusedwith high-
currentdraw equipmentsuchaspower ampli- fiers.Thetotal powerdrawto eachoutlet may
not exceed100watts.
TheSwitched ACAccessoryOutlet _ will receivepoweronlywhen the unit ison.Thisis
recommendedfor devicesthat havenopower switchor a mechanicalpowerswitchthat may beleft in the "ON" position.
NOTE:Manyaudioand videoproductsgointo aStandbymodewhenthey are usedwith switchedoutlets, and cannotbefullyturnedon usingthe outlet alonewithout aremotecontrol
command.
TheUnswitchedAC AccessoryOutlet will receivepoweraslong asthe unit is pluggedinto a poweredACoutlet.
Finally,whenall connectionsarecomplete,plug the powercordinto a nonswitched1lO-voltAC walloutlet.You'realmostreadyto enjoythe
AVR520!
