STARTING THE ENGINE

Turn the ignition key to MAR and position the gear lever in (P) or (N).

STARTING OFF

With car at a standstill, idle the engine and press the brake pedal, select the required position and accelerate gradually: the car will start off and the gear ratios will be selected according to the selected gear lever position.

USING THE DUALOGIC GEARBOX

The engine can only be started with the gear lever at either (P) or (N).

The following gear shifts (P-R; R-P; N-R) are protected from accidental engagement by means of a safety lock. Consequently, these positions can only be engaged as follows:

car at a standstill;

ignition key at MAR;

press the brake pedal;

press button (A) while you are shifting the lever.

4

SEQUENTIAL OPERATION

From (D) shift the lever to the left:

shift the lever towards + to engage a higher gear;

shift the lever towards – to engage a lower gear.

Each gear shift and driving mode selected is shown on the display. The

sequential gear shift is similar to that of a fixed ratio gearbox controlled

in sequence: 6 ratios are provided.

The electronic control system intervenes by varying the ratios when the

F0I0029m

engine ratio exceeds or drops under a certain rpm threshold.

AUTOMATIC OPERATION

(D) from position (L) and from sequential operation can be selected in

any conditions without pressing button (A).

The gearbox will select higher gears when the demand for engine power

is low, thus ensuring lower consumption. The gearbox will hold the

lower gears as the request for power is gradually increased to offer

good pick-up and acceleration.

F0I0174m

The electronic control unit will cut out sequential operation activating automatic operation only if the gearbox oil temperature is excessively high. Sequential operation will be restored as soon as the regular working temperature is reached.

Kick-down

For fast pick-up, press the accelerator beyond the hard point. This will operate the kick-down feature to obtain top performance (pick-up and acceleration).

IMPORTANT Avoid using the kick-down function on snow and ice.

Drive (D)

Use (D) on normal roads, in and out of cities.

F0I0174m

ECO function

This function enhances driving comfort and curtails exhaust emissions.

To turn the ECO function on, press button (B) on the gear stick frame.

Message (E) will appear on the reconfigurable multifunction display.

The ECO function is cut out in sequential operation. It will be automatically restored when switching back to automatic operation (D).

F0I1199g

Only shift the stick from (P) to (D), from (N) to (D) and from (R) to (D) when the car is at a standstill, with the engine idling and the accelerator pedal fully released.

6

Low (L)

In (L) the gearbox mainly engages low forward gears to optimise the engine brake and to offer the possibility of sporty driving up or downhill.

(L) can be selected also when the car is moving. Consequently, it can be used to slow down from any speed. Top engine brake effectiveness is obtained at speeds lower than 90 km/h. Using the car at (L) and exploiting the sporty driving that this feature offers will increase fuel consumption.

Neutral (N)

This position corresponds to the neutral position of a normal mechanical gearbox.

The engine can be started with the lever at (N).

Reverse (R)

You cannot start the engine with the lever at (R).

A buzzer will sound to warn the driver that reverse is engaged and the reversing lights will come on when reverse is engaged and the ignition key is at MAR.

SPEEDGEAR AUTOMATIC

GEARBOX

USING THE

To shift the lever from (N), remove your foot from the accelerator pedal and wait for the engine to stabilise at idle. Follow the instructions and important notes given in the "Starting off" paragraph above.

Only engage reverse when the car is stationary, the engine is idling and the pedal is fully released. Follow the instructions and important notes given in the "Starting off" paragraph above.

Parking (P)

In (P) the drive wheels are mechanically locked. Engage this position only when the car is stationary. Pull the handbrake as required. Follow the instructions and important notes given in the "Starting off" paragraph above.

In an emergency, you can shift the lever from (P) by manually disengaging the locking device.

Use the screwdriver provided to release the lock (see the figure) located F0I0175m near the ignition key under the steering column upholstery and remove

the ignition key at the same time.

STOPPING THE CAR

Release the accelerator pedal and press the brake pedal. Keep the car still when on a slope and the engine is running with the brake pedal only. Do not press the accelerator pedal.

For longer stops, shift the lever to (P) and follow the instructions and important notes given in the "Starting off" paragraph above.

The ignition key can only be removed from the switch in STOP position with the gear stick at (P).

WARNING Put the lever in position (P) to change a wheel safely.

8

PARKING

Pull the handbrake, select position (P) and follow the instructions and important notes given in the "Starting off" paragraph above. Leave the wheels steered. Block the wheels with a wedge or a stone if the car is parked on a steep slope.

BUZZER

A buzzer sounds in the following cases:

when the lever is shifted to (R);

when the ignition key is turned to STOP and the lever is not at (P);

when the driver’s door is opened with the key at MAR and the lever not at (P).

SPEEDGEAR AUTOMATIC

GEARBOX

USING THE

When stationary with the engine running and the gear stick at (D), (L), (R) and set WARNING for sequential operation, hold the brake pedal pressed to prevent the car from

moving.

WARNING

Never remove the ignition key when the car is moving since the steering wheel will

lock automatically at first steering.

TOWING THE CAR

Lift the car from the front for towing to avoid damaging the gearbox. Make sure the gearbox is in neutral (N) (checking that the car moves when pushed) and proceed as for towing a normal car with mechanical gearbox following the instructions given in the Owner Handbook.

Should it be impossible to set the gearbox to neutral, do not tow the car and contact a Fiat Dealership.

TOWING A TRAILER

Versions with Speedgear gearbox fit an electronic clutch control system to ensure a gradual pick-up even when towing a trailer.

IMPORTANT Take the lever to (L) when driving downhill instead of using the brake constantly.

MAINTENANCE SERVICE SCHEDULE

The Service Schedule envisages Speedgear automatic transmission oil level check every 20,000 km and oil change every 40,000 km (or every 3 years, without replacing the filter).

CHECKING OIL LEVEL

CHECKING THE SPEEDGEAR AUTOMATIC

GEARBOX OIL LEVEL

Check the gearbox oil level with the specific dipstick in the engine compartment. The dipstick hole is the filler to be used for topping up, if required. Make sure that the oil level is always included between the two reference lines MIN and MAX (H and C), on the dipstick. Frequent topups possibly indicate a leak. Have the car checked by a Fiat Dealership.

Cold check

Before starting off, with the engine idling and the car on level ground, the oil level on the dipstick should reach the reference line next to the word C.

Hot check

Check the oil level on the dipstick after driving at least 10 km with the engine idling and the car on level ground. The level should reach the reference line with the word H.

F0I0176m

Check the oil level on the dipstick after driving at least 10 km with the engine idling and the car on level ground. The level should reach the reference line with the word H.

WARNING

Before checking the automatic gearbox oil level, position the gear lever at (P).
