KNOWING YOUR
SEWING MACHINE
IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
When using this machine, basic sa fety precautions should always be tak en, including the following:
Read all instructions before using.
DANGER - To reduce the risk of electric shock:
1. The machine should never be left u nattended while plugged in. Alwa ys unplug the machine
from the electrical outlet immediately after using and before cle aning.
WARNING - To reduce the risk of burns, fire, e lectric shock, or injury to persons:
1. Do not allow this machine to be used as a toy. Close attention is necessary when the machine is
used by or near children.
2. Use this machine only for its int ended use as described in th is manual. Use only accessories
recommended by the manufacturer as contained in this manual.
3. Never operate this machine if it has a damage d cord or plug, if it is not working properly, if it has
been dropped or damaged, or dropped into water. Return the machine to the nearest authorized
dealer or service center for examination, repair, electrica l or mechanical adjustment.
4. Never operate the machine with any air openings blocked. Keep ventilation openings of the
machine and foot control free fro m the accumulation of lint, dust, and loose cloth.
5. Never drop or insert any object into any opening.
6. Do not use outdoors.
7. Do not operate where aerosol (spray) products are being used or where oxygen is being
administered.
8. To disconnect, turn the main switch to the symbol “{ ” position which represents off, then
remove plug from outlet.
9. Do not unplug by pulling on cord. To unplug, grasp th e plug, not the cord.
10. Keep fingers away from all moving parts. Special care is required around the machine needle.
11. Always use the proper needle plate. The wrong plate can cause the needle to break.
12. Do not use bent needles.
13. Do not pull or push fabric while stitching. It may deflect the needle causing it to br eak.
14. Switch the ma chine to the symbol “{ ” position when making any adjustments in the needle
area, such as threading needle, changing needle, threading bobbin, or changing presser foot, and
the like.
15. Always unplug the ma chine from the electrical outlet when removin g covers, lubricating, or
when making any other user serv icing adjustments mentioned in the instruction manual.
16. This sewing machine is no t intended for use by young children or infirm person s without
supervision. (For Australia and New Zealand only)
17. Young children should be supervised to ensure th at they do not play with this ma chine.
18. If the Light unit is damaged, it must be replaced by authorized dealer.

IMPORTANT
If the available socket out let is not suitable for t he plug supplied with this equipment, it should be cut
off and an appropriate t hree-pin plug fitted. Wi th alternative plugs an a pproved fuse must be f itted in
the plug.
NOTE
The plug served from t he main lead must be de stroyed as a plug with ba red flexible cords is
hazardous if engaged in a live socket outlet. In the event of replacing the plug fuse, use a fuse
approved by ASTA t o BS 1362, i.e. carry ing the mark, rating as mar ked on plug.
Always replace the fus e cover, never use plug s with the fuse cover om itted.

The wires in this main lead are coloured in accorda nce with the following code:

Brown Live
As the colours of the wiring in the m ain lead of this ap pliance may not c orrespond with th e coloured
markings identifying the te rminals in your plug, pr oceed as follows.
The wire which is colo ured blue must be connec ted to the terminal which i s marked with the letter
‘N’ or coloured blac k or blue.
The wire which is col oured brown must be con nected to the termina l which is marked with the letter
‘L’ or coloured red or br own.

PLEASE READ BEFORE USING THIS MACHINE
For safe operation
1. Be sure to keep your eye on the needle while sewing . Do not touch the hand w heel, thread take-
up lever, needle, or other moving par ts.
2. Remember to turn off the power switch and unplug the cord wh en:
• Operation is completed
• Replacing or removi ng the needle or any other parts
• A power failure occurs dur ing use
• Maintaining th e machine
• Leaving the ma chine unatt ended
3. Do not store anythi ng on the foot control ler.
4. Plug the machine direct ly into the wall. Do not us e extension cords.
For a longer serv ice life
1. When storing this mach ine, avoid direct sunlight and high humidity loca tions. Do not use or
store the machine near a space heat er, iron, halogen la mp, or other hot obje cts.
2. Use only neut ral soaps or det ergents to clean t he case. Benzene, thinner, and scou ring powders
can damage the ca se and machine, and should never be used.
3. Do not drop or hit the ma chine.
4. Always consult the op eration manual when repla cing or installing any assemblies, the pres ser
feet, needle, or other p arts to assure correct inst allation.
For repair or adju stment
In the event a malfunctio n occurs or adjustment is required, first follow the troubleshooting table i n
the back of the opera tion manual to inspect a nd adjust the machin e yourself. If the proble m persists,
please consult you r local authorized B rother dealer.

Needle and presser foot s ection
a Buttonhole lever
Lower the buttonhole lever when sewing buttonholes
and bar tacks.
b Needle threader (for models equipped with the needle
threader) (page 17)
c Presser foot holder
The presser foot is installed onto the presser foot holder.
d Presser foot holder screw
Use the presser foot holder scr ew to hold the presser
foot holder in place.
e Presser foot
The presser foot applies pressure co nsistently on the
fabric as the sewing takes place. Attach the appropriate
presser foot for the selected stitching.
f Feed dogs
The feed dogs feed the fabric in t he sewing direct ion.
g Quick-set bobbin (for models equipped with the quick-
set bobbin)
You can start sewing witho ut pulling up the bobbin thread.
h Bobbin cover
Open the bobbin cover to se t the bobbin.
i Needle plate
The needle plate is mar ked with guides for se wing
straight seams.
j Needle ba r thread g uide
Pass the upper thread through the needle bar thread guide.
k Needle clamp screw
Use the n eedle clam p screw to hold the needle in place.
Operation buttons
The operation butt ons help you to easily perform variou s basic sewing machine operatio ns.
The operation butt ons differ depending on the sewing machine model.
a Presser foot lever
Raise and lower the presser foot lever to raise and l ower
the presser foot.
b Reverse/reinforcement stitch button
Press the reverse/reinforcement stitch button to sew
reverse stitches. Reverse stitche s are sewn by keeping
the button pressed down to sew in the opposite
direction. For detai ls, refer to “Sewing reinforc ement
stitches ” (page 29).
■ Buttons provided on some models
c Start/stop button (for models equipped with the
start/stop button)
Press the start/stop button to start or stop sewing. The
machine sews at a slow speed at the beginning of
sewing while the button is depressed. When sewing is
stopped, the needle is lowered in the fabric. F or details,
refer to “Start ing to sew” (p age 28).
d Needle position button (for models equipped with
the needle position button)
Press the needle position button to raise or lower the
needle. Pressing the button twice sews one stitch.
e Sewing speed controller (for models equipped with the
sewing speed controller)
Slide the sewing speed controller to adjust the sewing
speed.

Operation panel
The operation pan el, located on the fron t of the
sewing machine, al lows you to select a stitc h and
specify how the stitch wi ll be sewn.
a LCD (Liquid crystal display)
The selected stitch (
1), presser foot that should be used
(
2), stitch len gth in millime ters ( 3), and stitch width in
millimeters (
4) are displayed.
b Stitch selection keys
Press the stitch selection keys, and then select the
number for the stitch that y ou wish to use. For details,
refer to “Selecting stitching” (page 27).
c Stitch length adjustment key
Press this key to a djust the stitch length. (Press the “– ”
side to reduc e the stitch len gth; press th e “+” side to
increase the stitch length.)
d Stitch width ad justment key
Press this key to a djust the stitch width. (Press the “– ”
side to reduc e the stitch wi dth; press th e “+” side to
increase the stitch width.)
Flat bed attachment
The accessorie s are stored in a compartme nt inside
the flat bed attac hment.

Note
● Put the accessories in the bag, and then
store the bag inside the compart ment. If the
accessories are not in a bag, they may fall
out, and be lost or damaged.

Power supply precautions
Be sure to observe the f ollowing precautions conc erning the power supp ly.

Insert the plug into a wall outlet.

● If a power outage oc curs while the sewing
machine is being ope rated, turn off the
sewing machine and unplug the power
supply cord. When restar ting the sewing
machine, follow the nece ssary procedure to
correctly ope rate the machin e.
(For U.S.A. only)
● This appliance h as a polarized p lug (one
blade wider than the other). To reduce th e
risk of electric shock, this plu g is intended
to fit in a polarized out let only one way. If
the plug does not fit fully in the outlet,
reverse the pl ug.
If it still does not fit, co ntact a qualified
electrician to instal l the proper outlet. Do
not modify the plug in any way.
● Use only regular hous ehold electri city for the power sou rce. Using other p ower sources may resu lt in
fire, electric s hock, or damage to the machine.
● Turn off the main pow er and remove the pl ug in the follow ing circumstance s:
• When you are away from the machi ne
• After using the mach ine
• When the powe r fails during use
• When the ma chine does not o perate corre ctly due to a ba d connection o r a disconnect ion
• During electri cal storms
● Do not use exten sion cords or multi -plug adapters with m any other applianc es plugged in to the m. Fire
or electric sh ock may result.
● Do not touch the plug with wet hands. E lectric shock ma y result.
●
When unplugging the machine, al ways turn off the main power fi rst. Always grasp t he plug to remove it from
the outlet. Pullin g on the cord m ay damage the cord, or lead to fire or e lectric shock.
● Do not allow the power cord to be cut, damaged, modified, f orcefully bent, pulled, twisted, or bundled.
Do not place heavy objects on the cor d. Do not subject the co rd to heat. These thing s may damage the
cord and cause fire or electr ic shock. If the c ord or plug is da maged, take the machine to your
authorized dealer for repairs before continuing use.
● Unplug the power cord if the machine is not to be used for a long period of tim e. Otherwise a f ire may
result.

Foot controller
Insert the foot controlle r plug into its jack/socke t on
the rear side of the sewing machine.
a Foot controller jack/socket
When you press the foot control ler down lightly, the
machine will run at a low speed. When you press
harder, the machine’ s speed will increase. Wh en you
take your foot off the foot controller, the machine
will stop.
You should make sure th at nothing is placed on the
foot controller when t he machine is not in use .
Note
● When the foot con troller is plugged in, the
start/stop button cannot be used to start or
stop sewing (only for models equipped with
the start/stop but ton).
Sewing speed controller
(for models equipped with
the start/stop button)

Slide the sewin g speed control ler to the left or
right to select the desired sewing speed.
Slide the sewing speed controller to the left to
sew at a slower speed, or slide the speed
controller to the right to se w at a faster speed.

• The speed set using the sewing speed
controller is the foot co ntroller’s maximum
sewing speed.
Changing the needle s top posit ion
Normally, the sewing machine is set to leave the needle in
the fabric when sewing is stopped. Instead, the machine can
be set to leave the needle raised when sewing is stopped.

Turn off the sewing machine.

Hold down the “–” side of (stitch selection
key) on the left and turn on the sewing machine.
After turning on the sew ing machine, release
the “–” side of (stitch selection key ).
X The needle st op position changes to the
raised position.
Memo
• Perform the same operation to chang e the
needle stop position to the lowered position.
● When connecting the foot controller, b e sure
to turn off the sewing ma chine in order to
prevent the m achine from ac cidentally bei ng
started.
● Do not allow pieces of cl oth and dust to build
up on the foot co ntroller. Doing so c ould
cause a fire o r an electric shock.

THREADING THE MACHINE
Winding the bobbin
This section describes how to wind the thread o nto the bobbin.
• For details on the fast bobbin winding, see page 13.

Pull up the spool pin as f ar as possible, and
then put a spoo l of thread on this pin.

Pass the thread around the pre-tension disk.

Pass the end of the thread through the hole on
the bobbin from the ins ide of the bobbin.

Put the bobbin onto the bobbin winder shaft
and slide the bobbin wi nder shaft to the right.
Turn the bob bin clockwis e, by hand, until the
spring on the shaft slides in to the groove of
the bobbin.

Turn on the sewing machine.
● Only use bobbi ns (part code : SA156, SFB: XA5539-151 ) that have been designe d for this sewi ng
machine. Using ot her bobbins may ca use damage to the ma chine.
● We designed the bobbin t h at comes with this machin e. If you use bobbins from other models, the
machine will not work prop erly. Only use the bobbin th at comes with this machine or bobbins of the
same type (part code : SA156, SFB: XA5539-151 ).

While holdi ng the end of the thread, gent ly
press the foot controlle r or press (star t/
stop button) (for mod els equipped with th e
start/stop button) to wind the thread aroun d
the bobbin a few times . Then stop the
machine.
Note
● If the sewing mach ine is to be operated
using the foot controll er, connect the foot
controller before turn ing on the machine.
● When the foot con troller is plugged in, the
start/stop button cannot be used to start or
