Safety Information
Please NoteThe following symbols and special messages may appear in this manual or
on the equipment to warn of potential hazards or to call attention to
information that clarifies or simplifies a procedure.
A lightning bolt or ANSI man symbol in a “Danger” or “Warning” safety label
on the equipment indicates an electrical hazard which, as indicated below,
can or will result in personal injury if the instructions are not followed.
The exclamation point symbol in a safety message in a manual indicates
potential personal injury hazards. Obey all safety messages introduced by
this symbol to avoid possible injury or death.
SymbolName

Exclamation Point
DANGER
DANGER indicates an imminently hazardous situation, which if not avoided, will result in death or serious injury.
WARNING
WARNING indicates a potentially hazardous situation, which if not avoided, can result in death, serious injury, or equipment damage.
CAUTION
CAUTION indicates a potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided, can result in minor or moderate injury.
CAUTION
CAUTION, used without the safety alert symbol, indicates a potentially
hazardous situation which, if not avoided, can result in property damage.

10/2008Before you begin
Electrical equipment should be installed, operated, serviced, and
maintained only by qualified personnel. No responsibility is assumed by
Schneider Electric for any consequences arising out of the use of this
material.
Before you beginRead and follow these precautions before beginning any procedure with this
drive.
DANGER
HAZARD OF ELECTRIC SHOCK, EXPLOSION, OR ARC FLASH
• Read and understand this manual before installing or operating the
Altivar 61 (ATV61) drive. Installation, adjustment, repair, and
maintenance must be performed by qualified personnel.
• The user is responsible for compliance with all national and local
electrical code requirements with respect to grounding of all equipment.
• Many parts of this drive, including the printed circuit boards, operate at
the line voltage. DO NOT TOUCH. Use only electrically insulated tools.
• DO NOT touch unshielded components or terminal strip screw
connections with voltage present.
• DO NOT short across terminals PA/+ and PC/– or across the DC bus
capacitors.
• Before servicing the drive:
— Disconnect all power.
— Place a “DO NOT TURN ON” label on all power disconnects.
— Lock all power disconnects in the open position.
— WAIT 15 MINUTES to allow the DC bus capacitors to discharge.
Then follow the “Bus Voltage Measurement Procedure” to verify that
the DC voltage is less than 42 V. The drive LED is not an indicator of
the absence of DC bus voltage.
• Install and close all covers before applying power or starting and
stopping the drive.
Failure to follow these instructions will result in death or serious
injury.
DANGER
UNINTENDED EQUIPMENT OPERATION
Before turning the drive on, or on exiting the configuration menus, check
that the inputs assigned to the run command are deactivated (at state 0)
since they can cause the motor to start immediately.
Failure to follow these instructions will result in death or serious
injury.

WARNING
LOSS OF CONTROL
• The designer of any control scheme must consider the potential failure
modes of control paths and, for certain critical control functions, provide
a means to achieve a safe state during and after a path failure.
Examples of critical control functions are emergency stop and
overtravel stop.
• Separate or redundant control paths must be provided for critical control
functions.
• System control paths may include communication links. Consideration
must be given to the implications of unanticipated transmission delays
or failures of the link.
• Each implementation of an Altivar 61 drive must be individually and
thoroughly tested for proper operation before being placed into service.
Failure to follow these instructions can result in death, serious
injury, or equipment damage.
1
For additional information refer to NEMA ICS 1.1 (latest edition), “Safety Guidelines for the
Application, Installation, and Maintenance of Solid State Control” and to NEMA ICS 7.1 (latest
edition), “Safety Standards for Construction and Guide for Selection, Installation and Operation
of Adjustable-Speed Drive Systems.”

WARNING
LOSS OF CONTROL
• Set the communication error trip time to stop the drive in case the
remote keypad display is deactivated by an unusual event such as
tripping, an operation error, or a power outage.
• Ensure that the communication error trip time is properly set before
deactivating the remote keypad display.
Failure to follow these instructions can result in death, serious
injury, or equipment damage.
PrecautionsAdd the last bullet of this safety statement to the Danger message.
DANGER
UNINTENDED EQUIPMENT OPERATION
• Before turning on and configuring the Altivar 61 drive, check that the
PWR (POWER REMOVAL) input is deactivated (at state 0) in order to
prevent unintended operation.
• Before turning the drive on, or on exiting the configuration menus, check
that the inputs assigned to the run command are deactivated (at state
0) since they can cause the motor to start immediately.
• For more information about the Power Removal Input, refer to the
characteristics and functions table in the Control Terminals section.
Failure to follow these instructions will result in death or serious
injury.

These power ratings and currents are given for an ambient temperature of 50 °C (122 °F) at the factory-set switching frequency, used in continuous operation (factoryset switching frequency of 4 kHz for ATV61H075M3 to D15M3X and 2.5 kHz for ATV61HD18M3X).
Above this factory setting the drive will reduce the switching frequency automatically in the event of excessive temperature rise. For continuous operation above the
factory setting, derating must be applied to the drive nominal current according to the curves shown in the Installation Manual.

Drives with the S337 or 337 extension are designed for use in difficult environmental conditions (class 3C2 in accordance with IEC 721-3-3). They are supplied with
a graphic display terminal.

The ATV61HD15M3X drive is not rated for 200 Vac operation. It is rated for 230/240 V operation only.
6
ATV61H075M3 to D15M3X drives are available with or without a graphic display terminal. Catalog numbers for drives without a graphic display terminal have the
letter Z added at the end, for example, ATV61H075M3Z. This option is not available for drives operating in difficult environmental conditions.
