ELECTRICALNOISE

Amajorcause ofsonarproblems iselectrical noise. This usually appearsonthe sonar'sdisplayas randompatternsof dots or lines. In severecases, It can

completely coverthe screen with blackdots, orcause the unit operate erraticly, or not at all.

Toeliminateor minimize the effectsofelectrical noise, firsttrytodeterminethe cause. Withthe boatatrestin the water, the firstthing you shoulddo isturn all electrical equipmentonthe boatoff. Makecertain the engineis off, also. Turn

on, then turn offASP

all electrical equipmenthas beenturnedon, their effect on the sonardisplay noted, then turnedoff.

Ifyoufindnoiseinterferencefromanelectrical instrument, trollingmotor, pump, or radio, try to isolate the problem. You can usuallyre-route the sonar unit's

powercable and transducercable away from the wiring that is causing the

cables radiate noise when

transmitting,

Whenno noise appearson the sonarunit afterallofthe abovetests, then the

noise source is probably cavitation. Many novices or persons with limited experience make hasty sonarinstallations which functionperfectlyin shallow water, orwhenthe boatisatrest. Innearlyallcases, thecauseofthe malfunction

will bethe locationand/orangleofthe transducer. Theface ofthetransducer must beplacedin a location thathas asmooth flow ofwateratall boat speeds.

Readyourtransducerowners manual forthe best mounting position.
