The pleasure you get from driving a BMW is the result of fine engineering – always setting the benchmark because it is based on much more than engine power. This is the tradition behind BMW EfficientDynamics. It includes the visionary Hydrogen engine, already used in completely emissionfree BMW Hydrogen 7 vehicles and BMW ActiveHybrid technology, an intelligent, demand-oriented combination of internal combustion engine
and electric motor. Every BMW, in fact, already includes a multi-award-winning BMW EfficientDynamics technology package as standard, boosting dynamics even further while simultaneously reducing fuel consumption and CO2 emissions.
High Precision Injection
In this cutting-edge generation of petrol direct injection, the Piezo injectors are positioned very close to the spark plugs. They inject the fuel at high pressure and with extreme precision. With the four-cylinder models, the injectors’ central positioning means only part of the combustion chamber
needs to be filled with an ignitable petrol-air mixture. The engine can then run “leanly” and
so efficiently, precisely in the heavily used moderate load range.
Auto Start/Stop function
BMW four-cylinder engines with 6-speed manual transmission automatically shut down when the vehicle is stationary, for example
at a red light or in a jam, when the driver activates the clutch and switches to neutral. The engine restarts as soon as the clutch is
activated again. This innovation significantly reduces fuel consumption especially in
city traffic.
Optimum Shift Indicator
Timely gear shifts are one of the most effective and easiest ways to save fuel. This is where the Optimum Shift Indicator, in conjunction with the 6-speed manual transmission, comes in. It shows the driver what gear to use in order
to drive more efficiently.
BMW TwinPower Turbo Technology
With this innovative new exhaust gas turbocharging method, the energy in the exhaust is recovered extremely efficiently thanks to dual-stream flow to a TwinScroll turbocharger (135i). In tandem with Valvetronic
fully variable valve control and High Precision
Injection, this leads to a significant reduction in fuel consumption – coupled with a marked increase in output.
Electric Power Steering 
In comparison with conventional, hydraulic steering systems, the electrical steering only uses energy during actual steering. When the steering wheel position is constant – for example, at high speed along the motorway – the electric motor is inactive*.
Tyres with reduced rolling-resistance
While driving, tyres are constantly changing shape. This uses up energy and thus fuel. Tyres with reduced rolling-resistance have an improved design and use special materials for their road treads and side walls, reducing deformation.
Brake Energy Regeneration
To supply a battery with electrical energy, the generator (alternator) is permanently driven using engine power, which demands additional fuel consumption. Brake Energy Regeneration means the generator
usually only generates electricity when the driver takes the foot off the accelerator or the brake – previously unused kinetic energy is transformed in coasting mode into electrical energy before being fed into the battery.
In this way, electricity is generated while coasting, without consuming fuel.
Some BMW EfficientDynamics features are dependent on the car’s equipment and are not available for all model variants. Your BMW partner will be happy to provide you with information on all equipment details.
*Not for 135i, optional via Servotronic for diesel engines with automatic transmission.

o Xenon Headlights for high and low beam, incl. daytime driving lights, four light rings and automatic headlight range control, for better road illumination at night or in bad weather. o Adaptive Headlights with variable light distribution incl. turning lights, only in conjunction with Xenon Headlights: for optimal and prompt illumination of bends through electro-mechanical control of the moveable lamps as soon as the driver turns the steering wheel. o High-beam assistant helps the driver at night by automatically switching from high to low beam for oncoming traffic and cars ahead, or when street lighting is sufficient.
s Rearlights in LEDtechnology: each taillight is made up of three separate high-performance LED lights, accentuating the tailgate’s dynamic feel.
s Dynamic Braking Lights help vehicles travelling behind you to evaluate your braking more accurately. In the event of an emergency stop, the illuminated area of the brake lights is increased, so traffic following behind can tell in an instant the difference between a light tap on the brake pedal and a hard stop – for increased driving safety.
o Fog lights (standard on 125i and 123d, not available on 135i) integrated in the front apron ensure extra safety in poor visibility. Option includes exterior mirror heating and screen washer nozzles (heated on 125i, 135i and 123d).
o Rain sensor including automatic driving lights control: Once activated, the rain sensor will automatically switch on the windscreen wipers when it begins to rain, adjusting the wiper frequency in line with rainfall intensity. The integrated automatic driving lights control activates the low beam automatically at dusk and in tunnels.
o Lights package includes vicinity lights in the door handles, which upon unlocking the doors illuminate the area outside the doors for 20 seconds to enable safe vehicle access in the dark. Also included: reading lights at the front, footwell illumination at the front, vanity mirror lights for driver and front passenger and ambient light.
o Trailer tow hitch with removable ball head (not available on 135i).
