A-dec Self-Contained Water System
Quick Start Guide
About Your
A-dec
Self-Contained
Water System
The A-dec self-contained water system is designed to optimize the quality of
your dental unit water. It allows you to control the quality of water expelled
Selecting a quality source for dental unit treatment water
Performing asepsis and treatment of your waterlines with
proper disinfectant
Maintaining clean dental unit waterlines to prevent accumulation
of contaminates
How the
Water System
Works
Air pressure forces the water from the bottle into the water pick-up tube and out
to various water outputs such as the handpiece control block, syringe, and the
cuspidor cup fill for A-dec 500. A-dec’s self-contained water system is a closed
system isolating your chosen treatment water from the municipal supply.
CAUTION: Use caution when using the self-contained water system with
any dental units equipped with components that might fail
when the water supply is interrupted. Some types of scalers and
water heaters (except the A-dec low voltage inline water
heater/heated syringe tubing) are examples of components that
can be permanently damaged if operated without a continuous
water source.
A-dec recommends not using saline solutions, mouth rinses, or any
chemical solutions, not specified in this guide, in your A-dec
self-contained water system. These may damage the water system
components and cause the failure of your dental unit.
How to
Choose
Treatment
Water
The correct water to use in your A-dec self-contained water system (for patient
treatment) depends on the quality of water available from your municipal source
and the goals you have for using the self-contained water system. It is important
that whenever treatment water is specified for a procedure, that you are
consistent in your water source quality.
About the
Water Bottles
The A-dec self-contained water system has two water bottle sizes (0.7 Liter and
2 Liter). To prevent running out of water during mid-procedure, we recommend
emptying and refilling the bottle with treatment water before running too low.
WARNING: Use only A-dec water bottles. Do not use other bottles, including
glass, PET or PP beverage bottles. Do not use damaged bottles.
They can pose a serious safety hazard if broken while pressurized.
A-dec plastic water bottles cannot withstand heat sterilization.
Attempting to do so will damage the bottle and your sterilizer.

A-dec’s recommendation for waterline maintenance is based on daily use of the A-dec ICX
water treatment tablet. ICX is specially formulated to help prevent contamination and maintain
clean dental unit waterlines.
Before using A-dec ICX for the first time, test your water quality. If results indicate bacterial
counts higher than your water quality goals, proceed to Waterline Preparation, otherwise begin
daily use. Recommendations for dental unit water quality have been published by the
American Dental Association (ADA) not to exceed 200 cfu/ml and the Center for Disease
Control (CDC) not to exceed 500 cfu/ml. European Union Drinking Water Standards specify a
maximum of 100 cfu/ml. Refer to your national regulatory authorities for recommendations
specific to your local area.
Waterline
Preparation
If test results indicate the water does not meet your water quality goals, prepare
the dental unit water system for ICX using Sterilex Ultra.
®
A-dec recommends
following only the initial startup instructions on Sterilex Ultra.
®
Then proceed
with daily use of ICX to maintain dental unit waterline quality.

Monitoring
Water Quality
Based on CDC recommendations,* test or monitor water bacterial counts
weekly (or at other appropriate intervals based on established results). If results
do not meet your water quality goals, repeat steps outlined for preparing your
waterlines. Monitoring can be accomplished using in-office monitoring kits
(e.g., Millipore HPC Sampler). If these are not practical, another option is to use
a commercial water testing service. (*ref.: “Recommended Infection Control
Practices for Dentistry 2003,” CDC)
Step Action
1
Before refilling bottle and at
the start of every day,
empty any remaining water
left in the bottle.
2
Drop tablet into empty
bottle. (To prevent
contamination, avoid
touching the tablet.)
3
Fill bottle with water, and
connect to dental unit.
4
Wait 60 seconds for tablet
to fully dissolve.
