INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR ADDITION OF AN OPTICAL
TACH PACKAGE (TDM) TO BENCH & MINI REACTORS
(X1481B w/o Analog Output; For X1496B Follow Steps 1-6 & 23)
1. Remove belt guard from overarm after removal of (4) attaching screws and lift knob.
2. Install optical wheel disc (1564HC) to the existing driven pulley (858HC2) with (3) 6-32 x 3/8
machine screws.
3. Install the optical sensor assembly (A1001E2) to the overarm (1386HC2) with (2) 8-32 x 3/8
machine screws and (2) 8-32 "keps" nuts. Make sure to position the optical sensor assembly to
insure the optical wheel passes thru the slot of the sensor. The sensor can be adjusted up and
down by means of the sensor mounting screws to position the wheel thru the center of the slot in
the optical sensor.
4. Mount the optical sensor assembly connector to the overarm in the mounting hole provided. Use
(2) 4-40 x 3/8 machine screws and (2) 4-40 "keps" nuts to secure in place.
5. Reinstall the belt guard removed in step 1 with its attaching screws. Reinstall the round lift knob.
6. Connect the external optical harness assembly (A1002E) to the connector underneath the
overarm plate installed in step 4.
7. Unplug the power cord of the modular controller. Remove the (2) screws from the back side (at
the top corners) of the 4840 series controller. Lift the top cover which is hinged at the bottom front
of the case to the open position.
8. Remove and discard the uppermost 2" x 4" metal hole plug from the sloped front panel after
removing (2) attaching nuts from inside surface of the sloped front panel.
9. Use a small screwdriver to pry the red front panel off of the (A1005EEB) optical tach DPM (digital
panel meter) by inserting the tip of the screwdriver into the notch at the bottom center of the tach
case.
10. Insert the DPM into the rectangular opening, previously covered with the metal hole plug
removed in step 8. Take care to install the DPM with the printed circuit board, which protrudes
from the rear, to the bottom side.
11. Slide the rectangular-shaped ring over the rear side of the DPM from inside the sloped metal
cover.
12. Insert (2) small metal tabs (bent edge toward screw head) over #4 x 5/8 flat head machine
screws and insert (2) screws with tabs into holes on each side of the DPM. Turn screws to thread
into metal rectangular-shaped ring installed on the back side of the cover. Tighten screws
securely.
13. Reinstall red plastic cover onto the DPM.
14. Install edge connector of internal tach harness assembly (A1004E) to the back of the tach DPM.
Note the keying slot in the printed circuit board and the keying plug in the edge connector of the
harness must line up to properly to install the harness.
15. Secure connector to the DPM with furnished #4 x 1/2 pan head sheet metal screws thru the hole
in each end of the connector. Slide on the 3/16" long nylon spacer (1852HC), and attach to the
base of the DPM. Do not over tighten screws as it could bulge or push off the front panel.

No. 531M
16. Secure the tach harness to the DPM by inserting cable clamp (186DD2) around the tach harness.
Insert remaining #4 x 1/2 fillister head machine screw thru #6 flat washer, cable clamp, and into
upper R.H. boss (as viewed from the front) on the back side of the DPM. Tighten to secure.
17. Route tach harness under formed metal wire retainer (near hinged area) by removing one wire
retainer attaching screw. Reposition wire retainer, reinstall screw and tighten securely.
18. Remove and discard 3/8 diameter hole plug from hole marked "RPM INPUT" on the back panel
of the controller.
19. Remove nut from the phone jack connector of the tach harness assembly and install the threaded
portion of the phone jack connector thru the hole marked "RPM INPUT". Secure connector with
the nut on the outside of the controller rear panel.
20. Attach the white wire of the tach harness assembly to any available position on terminal #9 of the
terminal block located on R.H. bottom side of the controller.
21. Attach the black wire of the tach harness assembly to any available position on terminal #10 of
the terminal block located on R.H. bottom side of the controller.
22. Close hinged front cover and reinstall the (2) retaining screws removed in step 1.
23. Install phone plug end of external optical tach harness assembly into the phone jack (RPM
INPUT).
24. Reconnect power cord for the 4840 series controller.
