PROFESSIONAL
PMD650 Portable MiniDisc Recorder
The first in a new generation of portable digital recorders,
Marantz Professional is proud to present the PMD650 Portable
MiniDisc Recorder. The MiniDisc format has received
considerable attention in many professional applications and
the PMD650 fills the need as the first truly professional and
affordable portable MiniDisc recorder.
The basic philosophy was simple - offer the same basic
features as our legendary portable cassette recorders and
establish a new benchmark of features and functions for the
digital age.
One of the most important aspects of these new features
centers around the safety of the recordings. Always a primary
concern with digital recorders, the PMD650 secures all
recordings by writing a backup of the Table of Contents (TOC) at
the beginning of the track (Pre-UTOC). Even if a recording is
interrupted by a power failure, all recorded information can be
retreived. Protection for late recording starts are protected by
the Pre-Record Audio Cache that will store up to 2 seconds of
audio while in the record-pause mode and then add that to the
beginning of the track once recording is started.
To automate recording and save disc space, the PMD650
includes a sophisticated Level Sync Recording (LSR) system.
The LSR system is programmed via the Preset menu and, when
activated, controls the recording of the PMD650 based on the
input sound levels. The parameters of the LSR system include
sound threshold level (-10dB to -60dB), time below threshold
level (2 to 10 seconds), and automatic or manual track
increment.
For maximum versatility, the PMD650 provides various ways to
record onto the disc. Either one or two mic/line sources can be
recorded onto 1 (LP) or 2 (SP) tracks. When recording from one
mic/line source onto 2 tracks, the PMD650 incorporates a dual
mono mode that sets the level of the 2nd track 15dB lower than
the first, so as to make sure that a backup track is available in the
event of a problem or digital overload.
Groundbreaking new features and the design and quality
Marantz is famous for, make the PMD650 the only choice for
professional portable MiniDisc.

APPLICATIONS
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
Broadcast/ENG: From the start, the PMD650 was designed
for Broadcast and Electronic News Gathering (ENG)
professionals. A full complement of professional inputs and
outputs allow total integration with professional broadcast
studio and field equipment. The versatility to record either 1 or
2 tracks with any microphone combination allows
customization for each individual requirement. All of the safety
features built into the PMD650 ensure that an important
interview or sound recording is always safe in any
environment. An optional Reporter Bag (CLC600) provides
storage and protection for the PMD650 and all the needed field
recording accessories like microphones, cable, and batteries.
Recording Studios: The exceptional sound quality, cut and
paste editing capability, and enhanced safety features of the
PMD650 enables it to replace cassette and DAT recorders for
location recording purposes. Back at the studio, professional
inputs and outputs allow total integration with other
professional equipment.
Sound Production: The PMD650 provides a high quality
method of recording sound in the field. The built-in editing
system allows tracks to be trimmed and combined in order to
create custom sound files.
Government: Each MiniDisc can hold up to 148 minutes of
audio from either one or two, microphone or line level sources.
Every track recorded on the PMD650 is marked with the exact
time and date of recording start, providing a reliable reference
for archiving.
