A typical network using an HP JetDirect 600N print server is
illustrated below. The card must first be installed into the printer
and connected to the network. Then, you must configure the card
for network operation.

Step 3. Before Installing the Card,
Verify That Your Printer Works
To verify that your printer is working properly, print a Printer
Configuration page. Instructions for printing a configuration page
on selected printers are provided below. (For other printers, refer
to the manuals supplied with the printer.) If a Printer Configuration
page will not print, refer to your printer manuals for
troubleshooting instructions.
HP LaserJet Printers and Mopiers
Perform the following steps using the printer control panel:
1. Make sure the printer is on and the READY message is displayed.
2. Press [Menu] until the display reads INFORMATION MENU.
3. Press [Item] until the display reads PRINT CONFIGURATION (or
PRINT CONFIG PAGE).
4. Press [Select] to print. If necessary, press [Go] to bypass
additional messages.
5. The Printer Configuration page(s) show how the printer is
configured.

1. With the printer status Ready, select the Printer Setup Menu
icon on the front panel using the up or down arrow keys (¦Ø).

1. Turn off the printer (or mopier).
2. Identify an available HP Enhanced I/O (EIO) slot in the back of
the printer.
NoteYou can install the card into any EIO slot in the
HP printer or mopier.
3. If the slot has a cover plate, remove it.
4. Insert the card. Align the card with the guide rails in the slot.
5. Press the card into the slot until firmly seated and tighten each
retaining screw a little at a time until both screws are secure.

NoteFor the HP J3111A Ethernet card, you can connect
to the LocalTalk port and to only one of the Ethernet
ports (RJ-45 or BNC).

7. Turn on the printer (or mopier).
Step 5. Verify That the Card Was
Installed Correctly
1. Print another Printer Configuration Page (or Service
Configuration print) as described previously in Step 3 and verify
that JetDirect Configuration Page information also prints.
In HP LaserJet printers, a JetDirect Configuration Page will
print for each EIO slot that contains an HP JetDirect card.
2. In the General Information section of the JetDirect
Configuration Page, locate the message “I/O CARD READY”.
This section of the configuration page also contains productspecific information, such as:
HP JetDirect product number
■
Firmware revision number
■
LAN Hardware (MAC) address
■
Manufacturing identification number
■

For LocalTalk-Only Customers: If you are
not connected to an Ethernet network, “I/O CARD
NOT READY” and “LAN ERROR - EXTERNAL
LOOPBACK” messages may appear. These
messages should stop appearing after three
minutes. To eliminate the messages, attach
an Ethernet loopback connector to one of the
Ethernet ports.

Step 6. Configure the Card for
Network Operation
If the card has been successfully installed and is operating correctly,
you are now ready to configure the card for network operation. You
can configure the card using the following methods:
●
Use the installation and configuration software on the
HP JetDirect CD-ROM. On Microsoft Windows 95/98/NT/2000
systems (Microsoft or Novell NetWare networks), the CD-ROM
installation utility will guide you through the entire printer setup
process.
●
Use HP printer management software (such as HP Web
JetAdmin) or other network utilities. HP printer management
software can be downloaded from HP’s Customer Care Center
(www.hp.com/support/net_printing). For additional information,
see the HP JetDirect administrator’s guide supplied
electronically on the CD-ROM.
●
Use the printer’s control panel (for printers with a supported
control panel) to configure basic network parameters on the card.
See chapter
●
Once the HP JetDirect card has been configured for TCP/IP
operation, use a supported network browser to access the
embedded web server on the HP JetDirect card. See chapter
this guide.
●
Once the HP JetDirect card has been configured for TCP/IP
operation, use the Telnet services provided on the HP JetDirect

Control Panel Configuration
Introduction
In most cases, you will use HP software tools to configure your
network printer. However, if your HP printer or Mopier has a
control panel, you can configure basic network parameters through
the printer’s control panel. Printers with control panel support
include:
●
HP LaserJet 4000, 4050, 5000, 8000, and 8100 Series EIO
printers
●
HP Color LaserJet 4500, 8500, 8550 Series EIO printers
●
HP Mopier 240 and 320 Series EIO Mopiers
●
HP DesignJet 1050C and 1055CM Series EIO printers
NoteTo configure HP JetDirect parameters on
HP DesignJet 1050C/1055CM Series printers
through the printer’s front control panel, see
your HP DesignJet setup guide.
For printers without control panels (for example,
HP LaserJet 2100 Series EIO printers), you must
use HP software tools for configuration.
You can use the printer control panel to do the following:

Enable or disable network protocols
●
Configure IPX frame types
●
Configure IPX source routing for Token Ring networks
●
Configure TCP/IP parameters
●
Configure Apple EtherTalk Phase parameters for Ethernet

After you have configured the HP JetDirect card through the control
panel, you may still need to complete the configuration of your
computer and network operating system for printing. For more
information, see the HP JetDirect software installation
instructions included with this product.
If you reconfigure the card—for example, you disable a network
protocol—your configuration is saved on the card and is maintained
even after the printer is turned off and back on again.
To Restore Configuration Default
Val ue s
You can restore default values by performing a cold reset on your
printer. See your printer documentation for instructions. (Note: To
perform a cold reset on some HP LaserJet printers, turn off the
printer and then hold down [Go] as you turn the printer back on.)
Resetting your printer restores both your printer and JetDirect
configuration to their factory default values. To verify HP JetDirect
default values have been reset, print a JetDirect configuration page
(see chapter 2
).
To Enable or Disable Network
Protocols
When you first install the card from the factory, all supported
network protocols are enabled (or turned on) when you turn the
printer on. If a network protocol is enabled, the card may actively
transmit on the network even when the protocol is not in use. This
may increase network traffic slightly. To eliminate unnecessary
traffic, you can disable unused protocols. Disabling unused
protocols lets you:
●
reduce network traffic by eliminating broadcast messages from
unused protocols (for example, IPX/SPX and TCP/IP).
●
provide better control over who prints to the printer by
eliminating users from other networks who might accidentally
route print jobs to this printer.

●
eliminate unnecessary information on the JetDirect
Configuration Page, which displays status information
for all enabled protocols.
●
display protocol-specific error conditions on the printer’s control
panel. These warning messages are displayed only if all enabled
protocols are unable to print.
To enable or disable network protocols
1. Take the printer offline by pressing [Go]. The “Ready” LED
should be off.
2. Press [Menu] repeatedly until EIO # JETDIRECT MENU is displayed
(# identifies the EIO slot number of the card).
3. Press [Item]until CFG NETWORK=NO* appears.
NO* indicates that access to the EIO JetDirect network menus
will be bypassed. You must change this to CFG NETWORK=YES* to
access the EIO JetDirect menus:
a. Press [Value]. CFG NETWORK=YES appears.
b. Press [Select]. CFG NETWORK=YES* appears.
4. Press [Item] to scroll through each network protocol until the one
you want to change is displayed.

Configuring IPX Frame Types
On IPX/SPX protocol networks (for example, Novell NetWare), the
format of network communication frames must be specified on the
card. In most cases, you can keep the default Frame Type setting,
which is AUTO (“Automatic”). However, you can manually set the
frame type format if required.
Note that the IPX/SPX protocol must be enabled (IPX/SPX=ON*)
before you can configure frame types.

or disable network protocols” in this chapter.
1. Take the printer offline by pressing [Go]. The “Ready” LED
should be off.
2. Press [Menu] repeatedly until EIO # JETDIRECT MENU is displayed
(# identifies the EIO slot number of the card).
3. Press [Item]until CFG NETWORK=NO* appears.
NO* indicates that access to the EIO JetDirect network menus
will be bypassed. You must change this to CFG NETWORK=YES* to
access the EIO JetDirect menus:

Configuring IPX Source Routing
(Token Ring Cards Only)
On an IPX/SPX network, the HP JetDirect Token Ring print server
must be configured with the type of Token Ring source routing used
on the network. In most cases, you can keep the default setting,
which is AUTO (“Automatic”). However, you can manually set
source routing if required.
Note that the IPX/SPX protocol must be enabled (IPX/SPX=ON*)
before you can configure source routing.
The possible routing selections are:
Source Routing Description
AUTO (default)The type of source routing required by the network
environment will be automatically sensed.
OFFAll packets are sent without source routing. The JetDirect
card will only respond to stations that are on the same
ring.
SINGLE RAll packets are sent with source routing. The Single Route
method is used for broadcasts and when the route is
unknown.
ALL RTAll packets are sent with source routing. The All Routes
method is used for broadcasts and when the route is
unknown.
To configure IPX source routing
1. Take the printer offline by pressing [Go]. The “Ready” LED
should be off.

Configuring TCP/IP Parameters
Using the control panel of your printer, you can manually configure
these TCP/IP parameters:

You have completed TCP/IP configuration on the card. You must
now configure your BOOTP or DHCP server. Refer to your
system manuals for instructions.
7. If BOOTP=NO*, the printer is configured to accept TCP/IP
parameters from the printer's control panel. Press [Item]
to configure each TCP/IP parameter.
a. IP BYTE 1=<value>* should appear on the control panel first.
To enter the first byte of the IP address, press [Value] until
the desired value appears. (If you press and hold [Value], the
values scroll rapidly.)
b. To save the value, press [Select]. Press [Item] to continue.
c. Configure the remaining bytes of the IP address in the same
manner.
8. You can configure the subnet mask bytes (SM), syslog server IP
address (LG), default gateway (GW), and timeout (TIMEOUT)
in the same manner.
9. To activate the printer and save your changes, press [Go].

Configuring Apple EtherTalk Phase
Parameters (Ethernet Cards Only)
You can configure Apple EtherTalk parameters if the Apple
EtherTalk protocol is enabled (ETALK=ON*), and the PostScript
printer language is enabled.
To ensure the PostScript printer language is enabled, check the
printer’s CONFIGURATION MENU. PERSONALTY=PS* or
PERSONALTY=AUTO* should be set.
To configure EtherTalk parameters
If you haven't already done so, enable EtherTalk by following the
instructions described in “To Enable or Disable Network Protocols”
in this chapter.
1. Take the printer offline by pressing [Go]. The “Ready” LED
should be off.

If your printer has been discovered through HP Web JetAdmin 5.6
(or later), the embedded web server on the JetDirect print server
will provide a link to HP Web JetAdmin for management of this and
other JetDirect devices on the network.

Viewing the Embedded Web Server
Before you can use the embedded web server, the HP JetDirect print
server must be configured with an IP address.
There are many ways to configure an IP address on the print server.
For example, you can automatically configure IP parameters over
the network using BootP (Bootstrap Protocol) or DHCP (Dynamic
Host Configuration Protocol) each time the printer is turned on. Or,
you can manually configure IP parameters using one of the
following methods:
●
the Install Network Printer wizard on the HP JetDirect CD-ROM
●
the printer’s control panel (see chapter 3),
●
Telnet (see the HP JetDirect administrator’s guide supplied
electronically on the HP JetDirect CD-ROM),
●
Using the TCP/IP “arp -s” command,
●
HP Web JetAdmin or other management software.
If the HP JetDirect print server does not receive it’s IP configuration
within two minutesafter power up, a default IP address is
automatically assigned: 192.0.0.192. This address is not a valid
IP address for your network but can be used to initially access the
JetDirect print server. However, to use the default IP address, you
must temporarily set up your system with the same IP network number or establish a route to it.
After an IP address is established on the print server, perform the
following steps:
1. Run a supported version of your web browser.
2. Enter the IP address of the print server as the URL.
The HP JetDirect main web page will be displayed.

HP J3113A 10/100 Base-TX print servers support 10 or 100 Mbps
operation using full-duplex or half-duplex transmission channels.
When connecting to network devices that do not support
autonegotiation, the print server will configure itself for 10-Mbps
or 100-Mbps half-duplex operation. For example, when connected
to a non-negotiating 10 Mbps hub, the print server card will
automatically set itself to operate at 10-Mbps half-duplex.
If the card is not able to connect to the network through
autonegotiation, you can manually set the link operating mode
using link configuration jumpers (P1, P2, and P3) on the card.

Link Configuration Jumper Settings
Link configuration jumpers (P1, P2, and P3) can be used to configure
the card. These jumpers should be used if the card is unable to
establish a network link through autonegotiation. If P1 is changed
to the AUTO=OFF position, then P2 selects the link speed (10 or
100 Mbps) and P3 selects the communication mode (Half duplex or
Full duplex). If you manually configure the card using jumpers P2
and P3, you must match the configuration of the connecting device,
such as the network hub or switch.

Link Troubleshooting
If the HP J3113A print server does not successfully connect to the
network:

both link speed LEDs (10 and 100) will be off
●
a “LOSS OF CARRIER ERROR” will be indicated on the
JetDirect Configuration Page.
NoteThe HP J3113A 10/100Base-TX print server may
require up to 10 seconds to establish a connection
on the network.
Try the following troubleshooting procedures:

Verify cabling connections.
●
Use jumpers P1, P2, and P3 to manually configure the print
server. Verify that the configuration of the connecting network
device (such as a network switch) matches. For example, if you
set the print server for 100Base-TX Full-Duplex operation, the
port on the network switch must also be set to 100Base-TX
Full-Duplex operation. Be sure to power-cycle the printer.
