I Was an Atomic Mutant is the new smash small screen sensation that puts YOU in
control of mankind’s most terrifying accidental abominations. It is the 1950’s, and
scientists have begun to meddle with atomic forces from the dawn of creation.
Hapless creatures stand defenseless in the unstoppable onslaught that the splitting
of the atom wreaks on the landscape. Mutations and stranger things begin running
rampant in the wake of the nuclear testing in the desert. Mankind will have to face
the awesome consequences of its reckless experimenting, and its up to YOU to
teach the puny humans a lesson. YOU didn’t ask to be mutated. YOU were
minding your own business. But now atomic fury rages through your veins,
consuming you with an insatiable desire for revenge and destruction. HOW DARE
THEY awaken protonic and neutronic powers in you? All you want is a normal
existence, but that is gone with the atomic wind. Revenge shall be yours and
destruction shall be complete. The irresponsibly wielded power shall be returned
unto them tenfold as your isotopic force lays waste to all who oppose you.
You will not have mutated in vain. Shout it loud, and shout it proud, for whether you
prevail or are defeated on the plains of battle the world will hear your cry. The tale
must be told and the hard hand of nuclear justice must be dealt. For should you
stand or should you fall, the world will hear you as you declare that
“I WAS AN ATOMIC MUTANT!!”
You will play as one of four incredible monsters, each with its own incredible tale of
tragic mutation.

powerups) You can even find secret extra life powerups. The object of the game is

4) CHOOSE YOUR DIFFICULTY (arcade mode only) At the start of each profile,
you’ll need to select the difficulty you’re going to play under. Once selected, this is
locked into that profile, for that game. You are free, of course, to have up to ten
games tracking at once. The difficulty levels are TINGLING, for beginning mutants,
ASTOUNDING, for most mutants, and BEYOND BELIEF!, for the most
discriminating destroyers! Difficulty affects a variety of factors, including the amount
of health you have, the rate at which your atomic power recharges, and the amount
of regeneration that a powerup will provide.
NOTE There is no difficulty setting for MONSTER MODE.
Once these options are set, you’re ready to stomp and smash. There are several
other options on the screen that you’ll want to check into, though.

BLACK AND WHITE
Through the use of modern computing technology, the Canopy team has taken great
care in adding COLOR to the game. For the first time, audiences can see these
mutants creating their mayhem in full Color. Exhaustive research from existing
models and original color production photos has allowed us to create these scenes
as they would have appeared, had the budget allowed. So, by default, enjoy the
scenes in wonderful CanopyVision color splendor.
We haven’t forgotten the purists, though. We have thoughtfully provided the option
to play the scenes in their original BLACK AND WHITE. Fans will appreciate seeing
this scenes digitally presented in crisp clarity.
NOTE: In Black and White mode, we have colorized the gameplay elements
(powerups) to keep them immediately identifiable. You may also notice slight sepia
enhancements to some effects. We hope you enjoy these necessary and tasteful
enhancements.
GAMEPLAY
ARCADE MODE
When the game starts, you’ll have 3 lives. The object of the game is to
destroy all significant structures in each level. Small things like cacti and cars are not
- 5 -
part of your objective. You can use them as throwable objects, destroy them, or
ignore them, it’s up to you. The DESTRUCT-O-METER in the lower right corner of
the screen tracks your progress. When that meter is full, you will have completed
that level.
Points are awarded for everything you destroy. At the end you will be
awarded a bonus based on your accuracy. Proceed through the levels until all your
lives are lost, and set the high score!
Along the way, you will find ATOMIC POWER symbols, color coded. Each
one of these radioactive goodies will help you out in some way. Some are obvious,
some are hidden in buildings, and you may have to divert from your objective to get
others. The POWERUPS are as follows:
Red--------------------HEALTH UP
Green-----------------ATOMIC POWER UP
Yellow----------------COMBO UP (health and atomic power)
Purple-------------------DOUBLE DAMAGE (limited time)
Blue-----------------INVULNERABLE (limited time)
Blue-Green-----------EXTRA LIFE
You’ll need to watch your HEALTH and ATOMIC POWER. When your
HEALTH is next to zero, it will start to flash. If it runs out, you will lose a life. If it is
your last life, that game is over. ATOMIC POWER has a slow regeneration rate. If
you use it all, it will slowly creep back up to full, assuming you survive that long.
Each weapon takes a different amount of power, so learn to use the big ones
judiciously, and learn how to use the low power usage weapons effectively.
So get to smashing, and see what kind of high scores you can post! The
levels just keep getting harder and harder, and are virtually unlimited, so there is no
end to how far you can go! If you have one difficulty mastered, try starting a game at
a higher difficulty level.
MONSTER MODE
Monster mode is a different kind of gameplay experience. You will only have one
life. Health Up powerups do apply, and Life Up powerups will just give you more
health. Atomic Powerups will do nothing for you, because you have UNLIMITED
POWER!!
It’s not as easy as it sounds, but it’s a lot of fun to stomp around with no restrictions.
Just watch yourself, because those Puny Humans can eat away at your health faster
than you think! See how far you can get!

OPTIONS
Clicking on the Options button on the main menu brings you to the Options menu.
Here you can select either Display, Controller, or Sound options, or view the Credits.
DISPLAY
The settings within the Display menu are very important to the game’s performance.
Graphics detail depends heavily on your processor speed and the power, memory,
and functions supported by your video card. The higher the detail, the more
processing is required. On slower computers high detail may cause the game to
slow down or run poorly. We have provided a wide range of options that can
significantly affect the playability of the game over a wide range of systems.
Resolution: This selection displays the pixel resolution and color depth. The
resolution depends on both the functionality of your 3D card and the rendering
options selected. Higher resolutions achieve better picture quality, but may lower
performance.
Monster Detail: Set to Normal or Extra to increase or decrease the monster’s
texture detail.
Gamma: Increases or decreases overall screen brightness.
Texture Detail: Set to High or Low. Increases or decreases the amount of detail in
the graphics of the environment, bikes, and riders.
CONTROLLER
The keyboard controls for competing in “I Was an Atomic Mutant!” have been
preset, but can be reconfigured easily. To configure your keyboard controls click on
the action name and then hit the key of your choice to “map” that key to the action.
You can adjust your mouse sensitivity by clicking on either end of the sensitivity
button. See CONTROLS for an explanation of the control functions.
Reset to Defaults: Resets keys to the factory configuration.

MONSTERS
WRATH OF THE SHE-BEAST
She was a woman, and she loved her man. Her whole calling in life was to
keep a happy home. He was busy, working all the time on the TOP SECRET project
that he could not even tell his beloved wife about. She just knew it was of
importance to national security and the future of mankind on the planet.
So she trusted him completely, and did her part for the nation by keeping her
modern home spic and span, and tending to her man.
Imagine her fury, her scorn, billowing forth like the mushroom cloud on that
fateful day. Their house, close to the testing range. Like any other day, she,
humming to herself, and busying herself with the work of the house. Out at the
clothesline, hanging the laundry to dry. The iron, heating up inside to make his
socks pressed and neat. He had left quickly that morning, silently, more intense
than usual. He didn’t even finish his poached egg.
He forgot to warn her of the fiery fury that would be set onto the desert plain
that day. Forgot to tell her to take her lunch inside the lead-lined kitchen that the
government had thoughtfully provided.
And so, when the heat of creation and the isotopic mayhem from between the
cracks of reality swept over her happy home, undoing all the dusting she had done
that morning, she was outside, unprotected, vulnerable.
After all she’d done for him, her reward was micro-cellular mutation on a
massive scale. Wildly careening isotopes infusing her cell structure with genetic
instructions that disregarded the time-honored commandments of conventional
biology.
Grow. Grow! GROW!
She was wracked with pain and confusion as her formerly size 6 petite frame
went big-boned and beyond in mere seconds.
Coming out of her transfigurational daze, she found herself grateful for the
first time for the canvas factory next door. Many days she had glowered out the
window at the industrial facility that blocked her view of the mountains. In her preapple Eve-like state, modesty brought forgiveness as she extracted reasonably
suitable rolls of canvas from the factory floor, and fashioned a makeshift garment.
Now, armed with unspeakable abilities, she stalks the landscape, her electric
washing machine and icebox a shambles, willing to destroy anything in her path to
have vengeance on the man who wronged her. She has nothing to lose, except
several dress sizes.
Her arsenal includes:

SONIC SCREAM:

Hurl tanks, trees, even troops or civilians across the landscape.
A yell that incapacitates all your enemies within its power.
Lash out with a powerful fist of atomic might.
SHE-BEAST STRATEGY
The She-Beast is certainly an empowered woman, especially for the 1950’s.
Her atomic EYE-BLAST is pinpoint deadly on all sorts of enemies and destructible
things. When you’re in the middle of the city, there’s nothing like a good STOMP to
level everything around you. Don’t forget the ammunition all around you. Picking up
and THROWing just about anything will cause mayhem. The more powerful the
object, the more damage it’ll do on impact. Anything that is smaller than a building
can be picked up and thrown, and that includes soldiers and civilians! Sometimes all
those bothersome enemies can get to a mutant, and that’s where your SONIC
SCREAM comes in handy. It’ll stun all enemies in a large radius. If you scream at
an oncoming plane, you can knock out the pilot and send it into a tailspin! PUNCH
at buildings with She-Rage and take them down!
Don’t forget to TAUNT your enemies (default; “T” key), just for fun.
INVADER FROM DIMENSION X
The atom holds many secrets. The mysterious behavior of subatomic
particles may hold clues to the transient nature of our reality. Scientists have
proposed endless realities, and dimensions stretching beyond our conception.
These have only been theories, until now. For in the swirling maelstrom of atomic
disorder unleashed in the testing, the very fabric of our reality has torn. Through this
temporal wound in space-time, emerges the most deadly threat the world has ever
known. An INVADER FROM DIMENSION X. This mechanical juggernaut houses a
single-eyed occupant hell-bent on destruction. Seemingly careless as to the
suffering it rains down upon the tiny beings around it, it stomps and blasts with
wanton impunity until all around it are in ruins. What does it want? Is it a lone
despoiler, or an advance scout in an interdimensional conflict that will destroy
mankind and its reality? Is the dimensional rift laying open, or closed forever to
further incursions from Dimension X? No man can know.
The shocking truth may never be known to the puny humans being flattened
in its wake, but the reality is beyond frightening. The occupant of the terrible
machine is but an infant from Dimension X, an extra-temporal toddler with no
morality that sees the tiny creatures as mere toys to be played with. The machine is
sort of an X-dimensional toddler activity center, whose plasmic light effects prove to
be devastating in our reality.
This creature wants nothing more than to play, and to find its way back home. An
interdimensional infant Crusoe, stranded away from his loving X-family. Humanity
had better hope beyond all hope that mom and dad don’t make it through the rift.

INVADER STRATEGY
The Invader from Dimension X brings with him the awesome power of XPlasma in all its destructive glory. The X-CANNON launches a ball of x-plasma
great distances and is great for taking out aerial opponents. For a special dose of
localized destruction, the X-BASH packs quite a whallop. Don’t forget that you can
uproot anything, including tanks and missile bunkers, and toss it a great distance.
It’s fun to throw a tank at another tank! The WHIPLASH is a low-cost whack of XPlasma that can take out close structures. But your ultimate agent of mayhem has
to be the DEATH RAY, in whose wake nothing will stand!
Don’t forget to TAUNT your enemies (default; “T” key), just for fun.

THE BRAIN FROM BEYOND INFINITY
The potential of pure mind is vast and untapped. The brain is one of the
greatest mysteries that has ever been considered. Medical science has long
suspected that given the right circumstance, the human brain unleashed could wield
unimaginable power and energy. That day has come upon the earth, and the brain
unleashed from the constraints of the flesh proves to be both mighty and terrible.
A humble hermit, alone, forgotten, with no family or name, lay asleep in the
desert that fateful morning of the test. Known to the few that recognize him as
“Doc”, he has long since crossed over into madness. Subsisting on snake, roach,
and other desert unmentionables, he has eked out a pathetic existence far from the
hallowed halls he used to inhabit. For only a few short years earlier, he was known
to the medical community as Doctor Hieronymous Jarl, world’s foremost researcher
into the brain. Dr. Jarl, it was said, knew more about the secrets of the psychic
world of the mind than all the other researchers combined. Working alone, he was
obsessed with plumbing new depths of psychic abilities, healing, telekinesis, mind
projections, and other unimaginable mental abilities. There was talk that he was on
the verge of breaking through the boundaries of mind and body, and forging a new
reality that transcended the constraints of crude matter that we all are shackled by.
Ridiculed and ostracized by his colleagues, he eventually went into almost total
seclusion.
- 12 -
Then, one day, the local fire department got a call. Something was
happening at Jarl Labs. Something terrible. Upon arrival, they were faced with an
inferno so unnatural, so strange, that there was nothing that could be done. Whitish
blue flame and energy consumed the lab and defied all attempts to extinguish it until
it went out of its own accord. Dr. Jarl was never found. What happened that terrible
day remains the subject of speculation, but it is suspected that Dr. Jarl’s greatest
discovery also became his undoing. No one could have imagined the great doctor
wandering in the wilderness as he did, the secrets he uncovered trapped in a
damaged mind, the power he unveiled waiting to emerge from the damaged flesh in
his cerebrum.
The atomic catalyst unwittingly provided by the military testing has pierced the
scarred flesh of his mind and freed the psychic force from the constraints of his
emaciated body. As his withered frame was atomized by the blast, so was the
power of his mind unleashed beyond the boundaries of space and time.
Unencumbered by the fragile corpus of his ex-humanity, the mind of Dr. Jarl is free
to show the world the purity of the psychic energy. His madness made manifest in
unspeakable power, he now seeks only to conquer and destroy. He is The Brain

His psychic powers include

of this dastardly ray, believes themselves to be harmless squeaky toys. In
this pitiful state, the brain is free to attack unhindered in any way he chooses.

BRAIN STRATEGY
The brain has perhaps the most unusual selection of weapons of any of the
creatures. From a distance, the projectile type PSI-BLAST is a good way to start
destroying structures and enemies. Up close and personal, there’s nothing like a

REPTOMICUS!
Perhaps the most innocent, yet most deadly force the atom has yet
unleashed, Reptomicus hurls atomic fire at his creators with primitive fury that knows
no mercy. His story is simple, his power unstoppable. A simple iguana, basking in
the noonday sun, contemplating its next meal. It’s primitive reptile mind, acting
almost on instinct; eat, sleep, protect. These primitive and uncaring urges magnify
beyond belief when smacked with the atomic firestorm. The very energy of the atom
infusing every primitive breath with fiery radioactive discharge. Growing to
unimaginable height and mutating into a grotesque anthropomorphic form, this once
innocuous creature now stalks the landscape with atomic indigestion that can only
be sated by the constant conflagrating expectoration that lays waste to anything it
touches. Belching atomic flame across the landscape, he inexorably, terribly,
advances upon all, enemies and innocents alike, with the fury of a primeval lizard
mind. It knows nothing but destruction, it wishes only for relief, for some sort of
atomic antacid that can put it’s brimstone breath to sleep. Ah, for the simple lazy
days, and a tasty insect. But those days are gone forever. Now all that remains is
to destroy. Destroy!! DESTROY!!!
Reptomicus is mighty indeed. Towering over all, he dispenses destruction in the
following manner:

REPTOMICUS STRATEGY
- 14 -
Reptomicus learned early in his mutant existence that the best defense is a
good offense. His best strategy is to take out enemies as fast as possible. The best
weapon for this is the FIREBALL, which can take out powerful enemies at quite a
distance. If someone happens to be pestering him at close quarters, the INFERNO
really heats things up. Both the INFERNO and the TAIL WHACK are good when
you’re inbetween lots of buildings, as each can take out several structures. Don’t
forget that anything you can pick up is also a weapon, except for the people. In
addition to being a tasty snack, they’ll give you a couple of health points as well.
The Atomic Bite is good for taking out buildings when you don’t have much power. It
doesn’t take much to take a big building down.
Don’t forget to TAUNT your enemies (default; “T” key).
ENEMIES
It’s not easy being an Atomic Mutant. It seems as if everyone is out to get
you. Here’s a guide to the best the puny humans can muster against your atomic
might.
CIVILIANS
- 15 -
The civilians running around are just there to stomp and smash. If you are
Reptomicus, they are also good to eat. Everyone else just throws them. Puny
humans are fun to throw, and do damage things that they hit. So, go ahead, throw a
housewife at a donut shop. Eat a soldier, they’re tasty! And don’t forget that COWS
are full of methane.
