The C-76 Classic Water Bath Shaker is a shaker utilizing an eccentric counterbalanced drive to provide horizontal plane rotary motion in a 1/2” (1.3 cm) circular orbit. A Proportional/Integral (PI) Microprocessor controller with instantaneous digital feedback controls the speed over a range of 50-300 RPM. It also provides temperature control over a range of 7°C above ambient to 80°C. For lower temperatures, an optional water bath cooling coil is available.
The shaker may be operated either continuously or in a timed mode via a programmable timer for shaking periods of 0.1 hour to 99.9 hours.
In addition, the C-76 is equipped with visual alarms that alert the user to the following conditions:
The end of a timed run
Deviations in shaking speed
Deviations in temperature
Power failure
A wide variety of platforms can be used with the C-76. Dedicated platforms are available for a variety of flask sizes. Universal platforms, utility trays, utility carriers and test tube racks are also available.

3.1 Physical Location

It is essential that the instrument be situated in an area where there is sufficient space for the shaker and platform to clear walls and potential obstructions during operation.
The surface on which the unit is placed must be smooth, level, and able to support the shaker under full load operating conditions.

3.2 Environment

The shaker is designed to operate optimally in the following ambient conditions:
5 - 35°C
20 to 90% Relative Humidity, non-condensing

3.3 Drain Valve Connection

The unit should be placed in close proximity to an open drain. It is recommended that a 3/8” ID hose be connected to the DRAIN VALVE for draining the bath. The DRAIN VALVE is located near the rear of the unit, on the side opposite the ON/OFF SWITCH (see Figure 1 below).
11

3.4 Cooling Coil Connections

If your water bath is equipped with an optional COOLING COIL, prepare the coil for operation:
1. Remove the rear panel of the WATER BATH ASSEMBLY from the unit (see Figure

3. Slip two lengths of 3/8 inch (9.5 mm) ID hose with hose clamps over the coil
ends. The hoses should be long enough to suit water or coolant supply and return (drain) length requirements. Be careful to note or label the operation of each hose.
4. Allow 1/8 inch (3 mm) to 3/16 inch (5 mm) of hose to extend beyond the hose
clamps and secure in place. Ensure that the clamps do not damage the hose.
5. Feed the two lengths of hose through the grommets on the rear panel and reattach
the rear panel to the unit.
6. Connect and secure the two remaining hose ends to their appropriate connections.
One line must go to an open drain or return to a coolant supply, and the other line must be adapted to a water or water supply. If tap water will be used as a coolant, the supply hose should be attached to a control valve to minimize water use.

4.2 Platform Assemblies

The C-76 can be used with a wide variety of New Brunswick 12-inch X 16.5-inch (31 X 42 cm) platforms, which will accept a variety of clamps for flasks, test tubes, etc.
A platform, which is a separate item, is required for operation. Refer to the Replacement Parts and Accessory Information section of this manual for details.

4.3 Baffles

The C-76 Water Bath is equipped with both front and rear BAFFLES (see Figure 4 below) to protect laboratory equipment and personnel from oversplashing. The
BAFFLES are interchangeable. They clip on and off for easy installation and removal.

4.4 Optional Cooling Coil

The optional COOLING COIL enables the shaker to maintain accurate temperature control within 7°C of coolant temperature to 80°C.

4.5 Optional Gable Covers

The optional GABLE COVERS, available in PLEXIGLAS and STAINLESS STEEL, are designed to maintain culture sterility by allowing condensation from the bath to run down the sides of the cover, and not drip directly on the contents of the bath. The
PLEXIGLAS GABLE COVER is recommended for bath temperatures up to 60°C; the STAINLESS STEEL GABLE COVER is required for temperatures over 60°C.

5.3 Installing Flask Clamps

Flask clamps purchased for use with universal platforms (see Section 9.2) require installation. Clamps are installed by securing the base of the clamp to the platform with the correct type and number of screws. All clamps are shipped complete with hardware.
Clamps for 2-, 2.8- and 4-liter flasks are shipped with an additional girdle to keep the flasks in place. The girdle is an assembly of springs and sections of rubber tubing. One girdle is already in place on the clamp, the other is packed separately. To install these double girdle clamps:
1. Place the clamp on the platform, aligning its mounting holes with holes on the
platform. Secure the clamp in place using the flat Phillips head screws provided (#S2116-3051, 10-24 x 5/16-inch). Use Figure 9b to help you identify the proper screws, as three different types of screws are shipped with the clamps.

first girdle down the legs of the clamp as far as it can go. The tubing sections will rest against the platform, and the springs will be under the clamp base.
4. Place the second girdle around the upper portion of clamp body (just as the first girdle
was initially). Make sure that its spring sections rest against the clamp legs, while its rubber tubing sections sit against the flask, in between the clamp legs.
NOTE:
The upper girdle secures the fl ask within the clamp, a nd the bottom girdle keeps the flask from spinning.
New Brunswick flask clamps are used on a variety of shaker platforms. Flat head screws of different lengths and thread pitch are used to secure the clamp. To identify the proper screw for your shaker application by reference to the head style, consult Table 1 below, find the proper screws and set the others aside:

aluminum, phenolic and stainless steel platforms.
NOTE:
To minimize the development of rust inside the water bath:
If you are using tap water in the bath, make sure the water has a low
iron content.
If you are using distilled water, mix it with a small amount of tap water
and/or add dissolved salts. Any ultra-pure (distilled, de-ionized or reverse osmosis) water tends to leach the iron from the stainless steel, encouraging oxidation.

The minimum water level required for operation is ½ inch (12.7 mm) above the top of the
PLATFORM. For most applications, the maximum allowable level of water in the bath is 2
inches (5 cm) above the top of the PLATFORM. The maximum level is measured with flasks in the bath.

7.1 Cleaning Surfaces

Clean the exterior surfaces of the unit with a damp cloth. You may also use any standard household or laboratory cleaner. Do not use abrasive or corrosive compounds, as they may damage the unit and void the warranty.
The water bath should be drained and flushed on a weekly basis to prevent mineral deposits from building up on the inside surface of the bath. Mild household or laboratory detergent can be used in the bath. A plastic scouring pad such as “Scotchbrite” may be used to remove any buildups or deposits. This can also be used to remove scratches from the stainless steel surfaces of the bath.
