IMPORTANT SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
When using this machine , basic safety precaution s should always be take n, including the follow ing:
Read all instructions before using.
DANGER - To reduce the risk of e lectric shock:
1. The machine should neve r be left unattended while plugged in. Always u nplug the machine
from the electrical outl et immediately after usin g and before cleaning.
2. Always unplug the mach ine before you change the light bulb.
Replace the bulb with same ty pe rated 15 watts.
WARNING - To reduce the risk of burns, fire, electric shock, or injury to pe rsons:
1. Do not allow this machine to be used as a toy. Close attention is necessary when the ma chine is
used by or near chi ldren.
2. Use this machine only for its intended use as desc ribed in this manual. Us e only accessories
recommended by the manufacturer as co ntained in this m anual.
3. Never operate this ma chine if it has a damaged cord or plug, if it is not working properly, if it ha s
been dropped or d amaged, or dropped into water. Retur n the machine t o the nearest auth orized
dealer or service center for examination, repair, e lectrical or mechanica l adjustment.
4. Never oper ate the machine w ith any air openi ngs blocked. Kee p ventilation openings of the
machine and foot co ntrol free from the ac cumulation of lint, d ust, and loose cloth .
5. Never drop or insert any object i nto any opening.
6. Do not use outdoors.
7. Do not operate wh ere aerosol (spra y) products are being used or where oxygen is being
administered .
8. To disconnect, turn t he main switch to the sy mbol “» ” position whic h represents off, then
remove plug from outlet.
9. Do not unplug by pullin g on the cord. To unplug , grasp the plug, not the cord.
10. Keep f ingers away fro m all moving part s. Special care is r equired around th e machine need le.
11. Always use the proper need le plate. The wron g plate can caus e the needle to break.
12. Do no t use bent needles.
13. Do not pu ll or push fabric while stitching. It may defl ect the needle causing it to break.
14. Switch the machine to t he symbol “» ” position to turn it off when making any adjustments in the
needle area, such as thread ing needle, ch anging need le, threadi ng bobbin, or cha nging presse r
foot, and the like.
15. Always un plug the machine from the electrical outlet wh en removing covers, lubr icating, or
when making any other us er servicing adjustments mentioned in the instr uction manual.
16. This s ewing machine is n ot intended for use by young children or infirm persons w ithout
supervision.
17. Youn g children should be supervised to ens ure that they do not p lay with this machin e.

If this machine is fitted wit h a three-pin non-rew ireable BS plug then please read the following.
IMPORTANT (in the United Kingdom)
Main supply (AC 230/2 40V~, 50Hz)
DO NOT cut off the mai n plug from equipment. If th e plug fitted is not suit able for the power po int
in your home or the cab le is too short to reac h a power point, then ob tain an appropriate safety
approved extension le ad or consult your dealer.
BE SURE to replace the fuse o nly with an identical approv ed type, as originally fitte d and to replace
the fuse cover.
If none the less the main plug is cut off be sure to remove the fuse and disp ose of the plug
immediately, to avoid a possible shock hazar d by inadvertent connec tion to the main supply .
IMPORTANT (in the other countries)
If the available socket out let is not suitable fo r the plug supplied with t his equipment, it should b e cut
off and an appropr iate three pin plug fitted. With alterna tive plugs an appr oved fuse must b e fitted in
the plug.
NOTE: The plug severed from the main l eads must be destro yed as a plug with bared flexible cords is
hazardous if engaged in a live socket outlet. In the event of replacing the plug fuse, use a fuse
approved by ASTA to BS 136 2, i.e. carrying the mark, rating as marked on plug.
Always replace the fuse cover. Neve r use plugs with t he fuse cover omit ted.
WARNING: DO NOT CONNECT EITHER WIRE TO THE EARTH TERMINAL WHICH IS MARKED
WITH THE LETTER ‘E’, BY THE EART H SYMBOL OR COLORED GREEN OR GREEN AND
YELLOW.
The wires in this main lead are colored in accor dance with the followin g code:
Blue Neutral
Brown Live
As the colors of the wir ing in the main lead of th is appliance may not c orrespond with the colored
markings identifying the te rminals in your plug, p roceed as follows:
The wire which is colo red blue must be connecte d to the terminal which is marked with the letter
‘N’ or colored black or blue.
The wire which is colored brow n must be connected to the te rminal which is marked with the letter
‘L’ or colored red or br own.

UNPACKING INSTRUCTIONS
Keep the carton and pack ing materials. You may have t o take or send the machine to be repa ired. If you do not
pack it properly, or do not use the right pa cking material, the ma chine could be da maged.
Please foll ow the diag ram below to unpack t he machine.
● This packing m aterial is design ed to prevent da mage. Save this p acking material if you need to
take or send this machine t o be repaired.

To use the machin e safely
1. Make sure you watch the needle carefully while y ou are sewing. Do not tou ch the balance
wheel, thread take-up lev er, needle, or other movin g parts.
2. Remember to turn off the power switch and unplug the cord:
• when you have stoppe d using the mach ine;
• when you are repl acing or removing th e needle or an y other part;
• if there is a power failur e while you are using th e machine;
• if you are che cking or cleanin g the machine.
3. Do not store anythi ng on the foot control ler.
To give your machin e a longer life
1. Do not store this mach ine in direct sunlight or in high humidity condi tions. Do not use or stor e
the machine near a heater , iron, halogen lamp or other hot objects.
2. Use only mil d soaps or detergen ts to clean the cas e. Benzene, thin ner, and scouri ng powders
can damage the ca se and machine, and should never be used.
3. Do not drop or hit the ma chine.
4. Always check the oper ation manual before you r eplace or fit the presser feet, the needle, or an y
other parts to make sur e you fit them correctl y.
To repair or adjust the m achine
If the machine breaks dow n, or you need to adjus t it, first follow the troub leshooting table in the
Appendix of this opera tion manual to inspect a nd adjust the machine y ourself. If the problem i s still
there, please consult you r local authorized deal er.

Connecting Plugs

Connect the power cord plug into the
machine.

Connect the power suppl y plug into a wall
outlet.
Note
● When leaving the m achine unattended , the
main switch of the mach ine should be
switched off or the p lug must be removed
from the socket-outlet.
● When servicing the ma chine, or when
removing covers or ch anging bulbs, the
machine must be u nplugged.
(For U.S.A. only)
● This appliance h as a polarized p lug (one
blade wider than the other). To reduce th e
risk of electric shock, this plu g is intended
to fit in a polarized out let only one way. If
the plug does not fit fully in the outlet,
reverse the pl ug.
If it still does not fit, co ntact a qualified
electrician to instal l the proper outlet. Do
not modify the plug in any way.
● Use only regular mains household el ectricity for th e power source. U sing other pow er
sources may res ult in fire, electr ic shock, or dama ge to the machine.
● Turn off the main powe r and remove the plug in the following circumstances:
• When you are away f rom the machine
• After using the machine
• When the powe r fails during use
• When the ma chine does not o perate correctly due to a bad conne ction or a disconne ction
• During electrical sto rms
● Do not use extension c ords or multi-plug ada pters with many ot her appliances plu gged in to
them. Fire or electric sh ock may res ult.
● Do not touch the plug w ith wet hands. Elec tric shock may re sult.
● When unpluggin g the machine, alwa ys turn off the main power first. A lways grasp the plu g to
remove it from th e outlet. Pulling o n the cord may damag e the cord, or lead to fire or electric
shock.
● Do not allow the power c ord to be cut, damaged , modified, forcefully be nt, pulled, twisted,
or bundled. Do not place heavy objects on the co rd. Do not subj ect the cord to he at. These
things may damage the cord and caus e fire or elect ric shock. If the cord or plug is da maged,
take the machi ne to your author ized dealer for re pairs befor e continuing u se.
● Unplug the power cord if t he machine is not to be use d for a long period of tim e. Otherwise a
fire may result.

Main Power and Sewing
Light Switch
This switch turns the mains po wer and sewing light
on or off.
1 Turn on (toward the ‘ I’ mark)
2 Turn off (toward the ‘ O’ mark)
Foot Controller
When you press the foot control ler down lightly, the
machine will run at a low speed. When you press
harder, the machine’ s speed will increase. Wh en you
take your foot off the foot controller, the machine
will stop. You should make sure that nothing is
placed on the foot c ontroller when the mach ine is
not in use.

Checking the Needle
The sewing needle m ust always be stra ight and sharp
for smooth sewing.
■ To Check the Ne edle Correctly:
Put the flat side of the n eedle on a flat surface.
Check the needle from the t op and the sides.
Dispose of any bent needles safely.

● Do not allow pieces of c loth and dust to
build up on the foot c ontroller. Doing so
could cause a fi re or an electric sho ck.

Replacing the Needle

Remove the power s upply plug from the
outlet.

Raise the needl e bar to its highes t position by
turning the bala nce wheel counte rclockwise.

Lower the presser foot lever.

Hold the needle with your left hand, an d then
use a screwd river to tur n the needle c lamp
screw countercloc kwise to remove the
needle.

• Do not use a lot of force when loosen ing or
tightening the nee dle clamp screw,
otherwise certain parts of the sewing
machine may be dama ged.

With the flat side of the need le toward the
back of the machine, put the needle in until it
touches the needle stop per.

While holding the ne edle with your l eft hand,
use the screwdriver to tighten the needle
clamp by turning it cloc kwise.
Put the twin needle in the same way.
●
Turn the main power s witch off before
you change the need le. If you leave t he
main power o n and step on th e foot
controller, the machine will st art and you
may be injured.
● Only use sewing-mac hine needles for
home use. Other ne edles may bend or
break and cause injury.
● Never sew with a bent ne edle. A bent
needle will easily break and cause injur y.

● Make sure you push in the needle until it
touches the s topper, and se curely tighten
the needle clamp sc rew with a
screwdriver. If the nee dle is not in fully,
or if the needle clamp screw is loose , the
needle may break or the mac hine may be
damaged.

Changing the Presser Foot
You will have to change t he presser foot depending
on what you want to sew and how.
■ Snap-On Type

Raise the needl e to its highest p osition by
turning the balan ce wheel towa rd you
(counterclockwise) and raise the pr esser foot
lever.

Release the foot by ra ising the lever at the
back of the holder.

Put a different press er foot on the needle pla te
so that the bar on the presser foot is in line
with the slot on the shank.

Lower the pr esser foot le ver and fix the
presser foot onto the shank. If the presser foot
is in the correct place, the bar should snap in.
■ Presser foot installation orientation
● Always turn off t he power before y ou
change the presser f oot. If you leave the
power on and step on t he controller, the
machine will start and yo u may be
injured.
● Always use the c orrect presser foot for
the stitch patte rn you have chosen. If you
use the wrong presse r foot, the needle
may strike the p resser foot and be nd or
break, and may cau se injury.
● Only use presser feet that have be en
designed to be us ed with this machi ne.
Using other any presser fee t may cause
an accident or injury.

correct orientat ion, the needle may s trike
the presser foot, which may bend or
break the needle and cause injury.

Flat-Bed Attachment
The accessorie s are stored in a c ompartment insi de

Note
● Put the accessor ies inside a bag, and then
store the bag inside the compartme nt. If the
accessories ar e not in a bag, t hey may fall
out, and be lost or damaged.

THE CONTROLS
Pattern Selection Dial
Note
● When you use t he Pattern Select ion Dial to
choose a pattern, turn the balance wheel to
the front (counterclo ckwise) to set the
needle in the highest p osition. If the needle
is in the down position when you turn the
pattern selection dial, t he needle, presser
foot or fabric may b e damaged.
To choose a stitch, simp ly turn the pattern selec tion
dial in either direction. Stitch widths an d lengths are
shown on the following p age.

Reverse Sewing Lever
You can use re verse sewing fo r back tacki ng and
reinforcing seams.
To sew in reve rse, push the Reverse Sewing Lever in
as far as possible and hold it in that position while
you lightly push the fo ot controller. To sew forw ard,
release the Re verse Sewing Le ver. The mach ine will
then sew forward.

Using a Free-arm Style
Free-arm sewing is convenient for sewing tubular
and hard-to-r each areas. To ch ange your mac hine to

Winding the Bobbin

Put the spool of thread on the spool pi n and
pass the thread aro und the bobbin-wind ing
tension disc.

Pass the end of the thread through the hole on
the bobbin from the ins ide of the bobbin.

Put the bobbin onto the bobbin-winder shaft
and slide the bobbin-winder shaft to the right.
Turn the bob bin clockwis e, by hand, until the
spring on the shaft slides in to the groove of
the bobbin.
