LINERLESS ADDENDUM
Use this addendum with the linerless option for the Monarch 9840 printer.
This printer can also print on linered supplies, so a peel edge is included in the printer's box.
Linerless Considerations
Note the following when using linerless supplies:
Only thermal direct perforated black mark supplies may be used. You
Linerless supplies must be printed using the narrow setting. See
“Adjusting the Wide/Narrow Knobs.”
A print speed of 4.0 inches per second is recommended for optimal print
quality. Your System Administrator can send the Print Control Packet or use the Printer Configuration software (available from our Web site at http://www.monarch.com/service/service_upgrades.htm) to change the print speed.
You may need to increase the print contrast. See “Adjusting the Print
Contrast.” Your System Administrator can send the Print Control Packet or use the Printer Configuration software (available from our Web site at http://www.monarch.com/service/service_upgrades.htm) to change the print contrast.
If printing linered labels, set the contrast to 0.
When switching between linerless and die cut (linered) supplies (or from
die cut to linerless supplies), you should use the CLEAN-STRIP (part number 120350) to remove built-up adhesive on the printhead.
Printing serial bar codes is not recommended. Using supply backfeed is not recommended, because of the 0.50 inch
non-print zone on the leading edge (beginning) of all labels.

Lower DIP Switches
If the printer will be unused for extended periods of time, we recommend
leaving the printhead unlatched.
Printing Linerless Labels
To print linerless labels, set the DIP switches on the back of the printer as shown:

Black Mark Supply OFF ON
Thermal Direct ON
On-Demand Mode ON
You must use thermal direct and black mark supplies for linerless applications. The linerless printer must use on-demand mode.
For maximum platen roller life, use only wide or only narrow supplies. Switching between wide and narrow supplies may lead to uneven platen roller wear and possibly reduce the platen roller life. Narrow supplies are two inches wide or less. Wide supplies are greater than two inches.
To prevent jams, do not leave the printhead closed (in the
locked position) longer than 30 minutes without printing.
Open (unlock) the printhead before a break period, at the
end of each shift, and at the end of each day.

Loading Linerless Supplies
Follow the supply loading procedures in your Operator’s Handbook. You may notice a different texture on the platen roller, supply guides, and supply sensor. Linerless supplies do not stick to these textured surfaces. Your linerless machine includes a shelf already installed. You can remove the shelf and add the peel edge if you are not using linerless supplies.
To add the peel edge or shelf:
1. Turn off the printer.
2. Open the cover.
3. Unlock the printhead by turning the retaining latch.

Adjusting the Wide/Narrow Knobs
Knobs are up for linerless supplies.
To change the supply setting, you need to adjust the wide/narrow knobs. You must adjust both knobs to the same position.
For linerless supplies, turn the wide/narrow knobs counterclockwise with a screwdriver until the knobs pop up as shown.
For wide (greater than two inches) linered supplies, push down and turn the wide/narrow knobs clockwise with a screwdriver.
Adjusting the Print Contrast
You may need to adjust the print contrast for optimal print quality.
To adjust the print contrast:
Using a thin screwdriver, turn the contrast knob slightly clockwise for darker print; turn slightly counterclockwise for lighter print.
We recommend you check the bar code print quality with a bar code verifier.
If printing linered labels, set the contrast to 0.
Your System Administrator can change the print contrast by using the Printer Configuration software available from our Web site. Print contrast can also be changed by sending the print control packet with your format. Refer to the online version of the Packet Reference Manual available from our Web site at http://www.monarch.com/products/products_documentation.htm.
