MID130TransmissionControlUnit
TheI-Shifttransmissionisatechnologicallyadvanced
automatedmechanicaltransmission,designedspecically
toworkinconjunctionwithVolvo’snewfamilyofheavy-duty
dieselengines.Inordertoworkasatotalpackage,theI-Shiftis
programmedwitheachengines’efciencymapandisoffered
withdifferentsoftwareoptionstofullleachoperatorsneeds.
AllvariantsoftheVolvoI-Shifthave12forwardspeedsandup
to4reversespeedsdependingonprogramming.Itisasingle
countershafttransmissionbuiltupwithasplittersection,amain
sectionwiththreeforwardandonereversegear,andarange
gearsection.Itisanautomatedmechanicaltransmissionand
usessynchronizersinitssplitterandrangegearsbutnotinthe
mainsection.Themainsectionutilizesacountershaftbraketo
meshgearsandequalizeshaftspeedsasneeded.Asingle

TheI-Shiftusescompressedairandelectricalsolenoidsto
performshiftfunctions,clutchcontrolandcountershaftbrake
functions.Allofthesefunctionsaretimedandcontrolledby
theTransmissionControlModule(TCM).Adedicatedairtank
isneededonthevehicletosupplyairforthesecomponents.
Theairisplumbedtothetransmissionviaasupplylineandis
distributedtotheothercomponentsinternally.Theaircontrol
solenoidsarehousedintheTransmissionControlHousingand
intheClutchControlValveAssembly.
AllVolvoTruckmodelswillbeavailablewiththistransmission
includingtheVT,VNSeries&VHDvocationaltrucks.Four
I-Shiftmodelswillbeofferedtosupportthepowerrangesof
theenginesaswellasofferingdifferentgeararrangements:

Therearefourpositionsensorsinthetransmissioncontrol
housing.Thesesensorsmeasurethepositionofthespecic
aircylinderwithinthecontrolhousing.Thesensorsare
inductiveandtheinductivecharacteristicschangedepending
onthepositionofthemetalpinthatfollowsthemovementsof
theaircylinders.

TransmissionControlModule(TCM)
TheTCMcommunicateswiththeGearSelectorControl

theTCMcanbedifferentdependingonthetypeofsoftware
packagesthatareinstalled.TheTCMcontainsthefollowing

LubricationSystem
Thetransmissionislubricatedthroughacombinationof
pressurefromanoilpumpandsplashing.Theoilisledintothe
mainshafttolubricateandcooltherangegears,theinputshaft
andmainshaftbearings.Thecountershaftbrakeandoutput
shaftbearings,arealsolubricated.Thelubricationsystemhas
twooverowvalves.Onevalveensuresthatthetransmission
islubricatediftheltergetsblockedwhiletheotherprevents
excessivepressureinthesystem,e.g.duringcoldstart.The
valvesaremadeupofacompressionspringandavalvepeg.

MID223GearSelectorControlUnit
Thegearselectorisattachedtothedriversseatandcan
befoldedawaytoaidinenteringthecabin.Therearetwo
availableselectorcongurations,abasicandapremium.The
selectorinthevehicleisdependantonwhichprogrampackage
levelthevehicleisbuiltwith.Bothselectorshavegearpositions
ofR(Reverse),N(Neutral),D(Drive),andM(Manual).With
theselectorinthedrivepositionthetransmissionwillshiftas
anautomatic,performinggearselectionsandshiftingwithout
driverinput.Wheninthemanualposition,thedrivereither
selectsthegearsusingthegearselectorbutton(premium
selector)orwilllockthegearthatthetransmissionispresently
operatinginandholdthatgearuntiltheselectorisplacedinthe
drivepositionagain(basicselector).Withthebasicselector,if

isprogrammedintheTCM.Withtheselectorintheneutral
position(N)pressinthefoldbuttonandthelevercanbefolded

themanualpositionisengagedatastopthevehiclewillstartin
rstandholdthatgear.Thebasicselectorisn’tequippedwith
agearselectorbuttonoraeconomy/performancedivemode
button.InsituationswheretheI-Shiftisunintentionallyleftin
gearwiththeparkingbrakeapplied,thetransmissioncontrol
module(TCM)willautomaticallygotoneutralwhenthekey
switchisturnedoff.Thisisdonetoavoidthetransmission
gettingstuckingearduetodriveline“torqueup”.Thereis
agearselectorcontrolmodule(GSCM)thatislocatedin
thecenterofthedash.TheGSCMreceivessignalsfrom
theselectorandinterpretsthesesignalsintocommunication
informationthatistransmittedtotheTCM.
forward.Thedisplaywillthenshowtheprogrampackagelevel
inplaceofthedrivingmode.Thisisfoundjusttotherightof
thepresentgearwithinthedisplay.
Note:LimpHomeModeshouldonlybeusedtogetavehicle
toasafeorsecurelocation.Itisnotmeantfordrivingany
distance.
Attimeswhenasensorfailureorcertaininternaltransmission
damagehasoccurred,“LimpHomeMode”canbeactivated.
Pressthe“L”buttononthegearselectorandmovethegear
levertotheDpositiontoactive“LimpHomeMode”.When

GearSelectorControlModule(GSCM)
ThegearselectorcommunicateswiththeGSCMusing8wires.
Thesewiresareusedtodecodeaswitchmatrixinsidethe
GSCM.
Insidethegearselectorleverthereareanumberofswitches.
Someoftheswitchesarenormalandsomearehall-effect
switches.
TheGSCMislocatedinthecenterofthedashjustrearofthe
VehicleECU.

"LimpHomeMode",onlyforwardgears1,3and5areavailable
forvehicleswiththepremiumselectorandonlyrstgearfor
vehicleswiththebasicselector.Nomatterwhichselectorthe
vehiclehas,reversegear1isavailablealso.Thevehiclemust
bestationarytoshiftgears.The“LimpHomeMode”,willbe
deactivatedwhentheignitionisturnedoff.Thismodeisonly
meanttogetavehicletoasafeorsecurelocation.
