Important information about your
Toyota
Occupant restraint systems
Toyota encourages you and your family t o tak e t he t ime to read Section 13 of this Owner ’s Manual c arefull y. I n terms of helping you understand how you can receive the maximum benefit of the occ upant restraint systems this vehicle provides, Section 1−3ofthisOwn- er’s Manual i s the mos t important Section for you and your family to read.
Section 13 describes t he function and operat ion conc erning seat s, seat bel ts, SRS airbags and child restraint systems of this vehicle and some pot ential hazards you shoul d be aware of. These systems work together along wi th the overall struc ture of this vehicle in order to provi de occupant restraint in the event of a crash. The eff ect of each system can be enhanced when i t is used properly and together with other systems. No single occupant restraint system can, by itself, pr ovide you or your fami ly with the restr aint equal to that which these systems can provide when used together. That is why it is important for you and your family t o understand the purpose and proper use of each of these systems and how they relate to each other.
The purpose of all occ upant res traint systems is to help reduc e the possibility of death or serious injury in t he ev ent of a collision. None of these systems, either individually or together, can ensure t hat there is no injury in the event of collision. However, the more you know about these systems and how to use them properly, the greater your chanc es become of surviving an acci dent without death or serious injury.

Seat belt s provide the primary restraint to all occupants of the vehicle, and every occupant of the vehicle should wear s eat bel ts properly at all times. Children shoul d al ways be secured in child res trai nt systems that are appropriat e for their age and size. SRS (Supplemental Restraint System) airbags are, as their names imply, designed to work wit h, and supplement the seat, seat belts and are not substitutes for them. SRS airbags can be ver y effect ive in reduc ing the risk of head and chest injur ies by reduci ng the chance of contact by the head, chest and knee with interior porti ons of the vehicl e.
In order to be effec tiv e, the SRS ai rbags must deploy with tr emendous speed. The rapid deployment of t he SRS airbags makes the SRS airbags themselves potential sources of death or serious injury if an occupant is too close to an air bag, or if an object or some par t of his or her body has been placed between the occupant and the airbag at the time of deployment. Thi s is just one example of how the instructions in Section 13 of this Owner ’s Manual will help ensure proper use of the occupant restraint systems, and increase the safety they can prov ide to you and your family in the event of an acc ident.
Toyota r ecommends you to read the prov isi ons in Section 13carefully and refer t o t hem as needed duri ng y our time of ownership of this vehicle.
