Setting up the Speakers for Dolby Pro Logic Surround

Proper speaker positioning is essential in order to achieve directional effects and diffused ambience, especially in the case of the surround speakers. Too much direct sound from the surround speakers can make its presence too obvious while too much diffusion may result in a directionless sound image. If it is not possible to locate the surround speakers in the preferred way, experiment with their positioning while keeping in mind the goal is to achieve a diffused and enveloping, but not overly vague, sound field.
1 Position the left and right speakers so
that they form a 45° angle with your listening/viewing position. The surround speakers should be mounted on the side walls as shown in step 4.
6
45°
2 The three front speakers should be
positioned as close to the same height as possible.
3 The center speaker should be positioned
even with, or slightly behind the front left and right speakers.

What Is Dolby Pro Logic Surround ?

New Dolby Surround standard
Dolby Surround is basically a home theater audio system. Dolby Pro Logic Surround is a new standard from Dolby Laboratories Licensing Corporation. It improves sound image by using four separate channels: offscreen audio effects, on -screen dialogue, left-to-right panning, and music. As a result, sound imaging has greatly improved directional accuracy, especially in the case of movie sound effects. You can feel as if you were in the scene. The Dolby Pro Logic Surround can be set to one of three modes depending on the arrangement of your speaker system: NORMAL, PHANTOM, 3CH LOGIC. The low bass sound will come out from the left and right front speakers. We thank Dolby Laboratories Licensing Corporation for its unique directionality emphasis circuitry.
What is Pro Logic?
Pro Logic is a form of playback system. It uses professional decoder technology for movie creators to re-create the sound field of a two-channel Dolby Surround signal.
NORMAL mode
Select this mode when using rear speakers and a small center speaker such as those provided with this system. Since a small speaker cannot reproduce a full bass sound, the low bass sound on the center channel is output through the front left and right speakers.

Troubleshooting Guide

•The unit is not disconnected from the AC power source (mains) as long as it is connected to the wall outlet, even if the unit itself has been turned off.
•Unplug the system from the AC power outlet if it is not to be used for an extended period of time. To disconnect the AC power cord, pull it out by the plug. Never pull the cord itself.
•Should any solid object or liquid fall into the component, unplug the stereo system and have the component checked by qualified personnel before operating it any further.
•The AC power cord must be changed only at the qualified service shop.
In case color irregularity is observed on nearby TV screen
With the magnetically shielded type of speaker system, the speakers can be installed near a TV set. However, color irregularity may still be observed on the TV screen depending on the type of your TV set.
If color irregularity is observed...
Turn off the TV set once, then turn it on after 15 to 30 minutes.
If color irregularity is observed again...
Place the speakers farther away from the TV set.

Precautions
If you have any questions or problems concerning your stereo system, please consult your nearest Sony dealer.
On installation
•Place the stereo system in a location with adequate ventilation to prevent heat build-up in the stereo system.
•Do not place the unit in an inclined position.
•Do not place the unit in locations where it is; – Extremely hot or cold – Dusty or dirty – Very humid – Vibrating – Subject to direct sunlight
On condensation in the CD player component
If the system is brought directly from a cold to a warm location, or is placed in a very damp room, moisture may condense on the lens inside the CD player. Should this occur, the CD player will not operate. Remove the CD and leave the system turned on for about an hour until the moisture evaporates.
To save a tape permanently
To prevent a tape from being accidentally recorded over, break off the cassette tab from side A or B as illustrated. If you later want to reuse the tape for recording, cover the broken tab with adhesive tape.
Side A
Tab of side B
When you are using a TYPE II (CrO2) or TYPE IV (metal) cassette, be careful not to cover the detector slots which allow the tape player to automatically detect the type of tape.

Maintenance

To clean the tape heads and tape path
Contaminated tape heads cause poor recording or sound drop-out in playback. We recommend cleaning after every 10 hours of operation.
Open the tape compartment and wipe the heads, the pinch rollers and the capstans with a cleaning swab slightly moistened with cleaning fluid or alcohol. Wipe the parts shown below:
Deck A Cleaning
swab
Capstan
Pinch roller
Playback head
Deck B Cleaning
swab
Insert a tape when the areas cleaned are completely dry.
To demagnetize the tape heads
After 20 to 30 hours of use, enough residual magnetism will have built up on the heads to begin to cause loss of high frequencies and hiss. At this time, demagnetize the heads and all metal parts in the tape path with a commercially available tape head demagnetizer. Refer to the instructions of the demagnetizer.
To clean the cabinet
Use a soft cloth slightly moistened with mild detergent solution.
To clean the CD
When a CD is dirty, clean it with a cleaning cloth. Wipe the CD from the center out.
