prevent the risk of fire or electrical shock, do not expose the product to rain or any type of moisture.
R Unplug this unit from power outlets if it
emits smoke, an abnormal smell or makes unusual noise. These conditions can cause fire or electric shock. Confirm that smoke has stopped and contact the Panasonic Call Center at 1-800-211-PANA (1-800-211-7262).
Operating safeguards
R Do
not disassemble the product.
R Do not spill liquids (detergents, cleansers,
etc.) onto the telephone line cord plug, or allow it to become wet at all. This may cause a fire. If the telephone line cord plug becomes wet, immediately pull it from the telephone wall jack, and do not use.
R Do not excessively pull the corded handset
cord from the base unit. This may cause the base unit to fall, resulting in injury.
CAUTION
Installation and location
R Never install telephone wiring during an
electrical storm.
R Never install telephone line jacks in wet
locations unless the jack is specifically designed for wet locations.
R Never touch uninsulated telephone wires or
terminals unless the telephone line has been disconnected at the network interface.
R Use caution when installing or modifying
telephone lines.
R This product is unable to make calls when
the call restriction feature is turned on (only phone numbers stored in the unit as emergency numbers can be called).

When using your product, basic safety precautions should always be followed to reduce the risk of fire, electric shock, and injury to persons, including the following:

Preparation

Connections

nnect the handset cord (A) to the handset and the unit. Connect the telephone
C line cord until it clicks into the unit and telephone line jack (B). After line connection, lift the handset to check for a dial tone.
R Use only a Panasonic handset for KX-TS840. R U
se only the supplied telephone line cord. Using another telephone line cord may
not allow the unit to work properly.
*DSL/ADSL filter (not supplied) is required if you have DSL/ADSL service.

Initial setting

Dialing mode
If
you cannot make calls, change this setting according to your telephone line service. The default setting is TONE. TONE: For tone dial service. PULSE: For rotary/pulse dial service.

speakerphone in a quiet environment. If necessary, adjust the speaker volume.
R You can switch to the handset by
lifting it up. To switch back to the speakerphone, press MSP-PHONEN and place the handset on the cradle.

Pause (for PBX/long distance service us

A pause is sometimes required when making calls using a PBX or long distance service. Example: If you need to dial the line access number 9 when making outside calls with a PBX:
1 Lift the handset or press
MSP-PHONEN. R Status indicator light will turn ON
after pressing MSP-PHONEN.
2 M9N ® MPAUSEN 3 Dial the phone number.
Note:
R A 3.5 second pause is inserted each
time MPAUSEN is pressed. Repeat as needed to create longer pauses.

Answering calls

en a call is being received, the unit
h rings and the ringer indicator flashes quickly. You can answer the call by simply lifting the handset.

Making/Answering Calls
Note:

e ringer indicator will flash when
– a telephone number is dialed using
another phone which is in PULSE mode, or
– someone picks up or hangs up
another phone connected to the same phone line.
This is normal.
Adjusting the unit ringer volume

Temporary tone dialing (for

tary/pulse service users)

You can temporarily switch the dialing mode to tone when you need to access touch-tone services (for example, answering services, telephone banking services, etc.). Press MGN (TONE) before entering access numbers which require tone dialing.
For call waiting service users
To
use call waiting, you must first subscribe to the call waiting service of your service provider/telephone company. This feature allows you to receive calls while you are already talking on the phone. If you receive a call while on the phone, you will hear a call waiting tone.
1 Press MFLASHN to answer the 2nd
call.
2 To switch between calls, press
MFLASHN.
