1. Names of parts
(1) Main body
1 Parallel interface port
The printer is equipped with a bi-directional parallel interface. Connect the printer to a PC (personal computer). This enables transf er of print information to the PC.
2 Main switch
Turn this switch ON ( | ) first, prior to using the printer. It is usually not necessary to turn this switch OFF (O).

1 Touch panel
Displays the various operation menus , etc. Set-up and configuration is accomplished b y lightly touching the corresponding area on the panel. * DO NOT press on the panel with pointed objects or wooden, metal or other hard objects. All ke ys, tabs and indications shown on the touch
panel will be referred to throughout this handbook in quotation marks.
2 Data indicator
Blinks/lit when the unit is used as a printer.
3 Copy/Printer switching key
Press to switch between the basic copier screen and the screen for printer operation.

2. Preparation
(1) Checking the accessories
Prior to using the printer for the first time, verify that the following accessories are included with this product.
• 1 CD-ROM (Printer Server software, Windows 95/98 / Windows NT 4.0 Status
Monitor, On-Line Manual)
• Instruction Handbook (Printer Edition)
* The printer cable is not supplied with the printer driver. Please purchase a bi-
directional printer cable (Centronics IEEE1284, commercially available). For de­tails, refer to the service personnel or the service center.
(2) Connecting the printer cable
Caution
ALWAYS turn the printer and the computer OFF before connecting the printer cable.

Turn the main switch, located on the left side of the printer, OFF (O).
Connect the printer cable to the printer cable port located on the right side of the printer.

Turn the main switch to the printer back ON ( | ).

(3) Installing the Printing System software
Carry out the following procedure to install the Printing System software that is ap­propriate to the operating system that is in use on your computer. The following Printing System software is available with this product.
• Printer Drivers
• Printer Manuals
• Printer Management Utilities
• PrinterMonitor Refer to the corresponding section for the appropriate installation procedure f or each software package.
* The printer is compatible for use with computers running Windows 98.
Refer to the explanations for Windows 95 when attempting to perform set-up and operational procedures under Windows 98.

3. Installing the Printer Driver
This chapter explains the required operating conditions for the printer driver and ho w to install it. The printer driver hands over the print data created by Windows applications to the printer. * For details of the functions of the printer driver, refer to the “Printing System On Line Manual” of the Printing System instruction manual.

3. Installing the Printer Driver
(2) Installing the Printer Driver
Install the printer driver as follows: * The printer can be connected to the computer by one of the following two methods:
local or network. If you want to connect them through network, refer to the opera­tion manual of the operating system (OS).
* The screens shown in the following explanation are those displayed when install-
ing the printer driver for Windows 95/98.
Start Windows 95, Windows 98 or Windows NT.

* If any applications are currently running, exit them.
Insert the CD-ROM supplied with the printer into the CD-ROM drive.

A start window will appear.
Click Install Driver in the lower left corner of the window.

* If the start window does not appear even if the CD-ROM is inserted, double-click
My Computer on the desktop, then double-click the CD-ROM icon.
The Set-up Wizard window will appear, so click Next.

A list of printer models will appear.

Select the printer you are using, then click Next.

The language to be used can be selected. Select the desired language from the bo x, then click Next.

Select the driver type.

From the list, select the type of driver to be installed, then click Next.
Select the connection type: Local or Network.

• Local: The printer is connected directly to the parallel port.
• Network: The printer is connected to the printer via network (using a network inter­face).
* If Local is selected, proceed to step 10. If Network is selected, proceed to step 9.
Enter the network queue name or the path for the network queue in the box.

To select another network queue name, press Browse. If you are going to use a local port for the network queue, click the check box dis­played below, then proceed to step 10. Otherwise, proceed to step 11.
