To start using your i305 phone:
Make sure your SIM card is in place.
Charge the battery.
Activate your service.
Enable security.

Locating Your SIM Card

Your SIM (Subscriber Identity Module) card is a small piece of plastic located in the SIM card holder in the back of your phone, underneath the battery.

Inserting the Battery

Your phone comes with an Extended Capacity Lithium Ion battery.
1 Remove the battery door. 2 Insert the top of the battery into the battery area.
Press the bottom of the battery to secure it.

Charging the Battery

Your pho ne comes with a standard travel charger.
1 Plug the charger into an electrical outlet. 2 Open the connector cover.

toward the antenna and lifting it out.

Battery Use and Maintenance

The Motorola iDEN Approved Lithium Ion
chargers provide optimum performance. Other chargers may not fully charge the iDEN Lithium Ion battery or may yield a reduced number of lifetime charge cycles.
Extreme temperatures deg rade battery performance. D o not store the batter y where temperatures exceed 140°F (60°C) or fall below 4°F (-20°C).
Lithium Ion batteries have a self discharge rate and without use, lose about 1% of their charge per day.
The battery capacity is degraded if the battery is stored for long periods while fully charged. If long term storage is required, store at half capacity.

Activating Service

The first time you power on your phone, your service is activa ted.
A screen then appears prompting you to select Ok to update your browser information. This screen will only appear during initial activation. See “Enabling Security”.

Enabling Security

•Name — Enter your name. See “Entering

• Line 1 and Line 2 — your phone numbers for phone lines 1 and 2. These are filled in when you receive your first Net alert after enabling secu rity on your phon e.
•Direct Connect — Your Direct Connect number is the number that others use to contact you using Direct Connect filled in when you receive your first Net alert after en abli ng se cu rit y o n y ou r ph on e. To view your Direct Connec t number, scroll to Direct
Connect and press A un der View.
• Group ID — the number of the Talkgroup you
have jo in ed .

•Ckt — Your circuit data number is the number you use if you want to use your phone to transfer circuit data. See “Using Your Phone as a Mode m” on page 48. You receive t his number from Nextel.

You must set up your voice mail box before you can retr ieve messages. See “Setting Up Your Voice Mail Box” on page 61.

Display Options

Two displ ay options appear at the bottom o f most screens. You select a display o ption by pressing the option key below it.

Menus and Lists

Your phone’s features are arranged in menus, submenus, and lists.
To acces s the items in a menu or list, scroll using the navigation key at the top of your keypad. This key lets you scroll up, down, left, or right. Holding down the appropriate part of the navigation key speeds up scrolling.
In this guide, this sy m bol > tells you to select a menu or list item. For example, Settings >
Security means: 1 Scroll to Settings on the ma in menu.

Menu Key

SIM Card Security

Your SIM card stores all your Contacts and protects your personal information. Since this information is stored on your SIM card, not in your phone, you can remove the information by removing your SIM card.
Note: Except for making emergency calls, your
phone will not fu nctio n w ith out the SIM card.
To preve nt unauth orized use of your phon e, you r SIM card is prot ected by a PIN that you enter each time the phone is powered on. You can change the PIN or turn off the requirement that it be entered.

Turning the PIN Requirement On and Off

When the SIM PIN requirement is off, your phone can be used without entering a PIN.
Important: When the SIM PIN requirement is off,

your SIM card is blocked. To unblock your SIM card, you must contact Nextel Customer Care. See “Unblocking the PIN”.

Changing the PIN

Note: The SIM PIN requirement must be turned
on in order to access this feature.
1 From the main menu, select Settings >
Security > Change Password > SIM PIN.
2 At the Enter Old SIM PIN Code screen, enter
the current SIM PIN.
3 Press A under Ok. 4 At the Enter New SIM PIN Code screen, enter
the new 4 to 8-d ig it SIM PIN .
5 Press A under Ok. 6 At the Re-enter New SIM PIN Code screen,
re-ent er the new SIM PIN to conf irm.
7 Press A under Ok.
Changed: SIM PIN displays.

Unblocking the PIN

If you enter your PIN i ncorrectly three times, your SIM card is blocked. To unblock your SIM card, you must contact Nextel Customer Care to get a PIN Unblock Code (PUK).
Important: If you unsuccessfully enter the PUK

1 Press * # m 1. 2 At your Nextel Customer Care represent ative’ s
request, provide the information needed to give
you a PUK cod e.
3 Select Unblock PIN. 4 Enter the PUK code. 5 Enter a new 4 to 8-digit SIM PIN. 6 Re-en ter yo ur S IM PI N .
Note: These steps must be performed in quick
code 10 times, your SIM card is permanently blocked and must be replaced. If this happens, all data is lost. You will get a message to contact Nextel Customer Care. Except for making emergency calls, your phone will not function with a blocked SIM card.

Removing Your SIM Card

your SIM card from your phone unless absolutely necessary.

Note: Protect your SIM card as you would any
delicate object. Store it carefully.
Locking the Keypad
Locking the phone’s keypad prevents its buttons from being pressed. When the keypad is locked, you can on ly:

Important: Emergency calls cannot be placed while
the keypad is locked.
To lock the keypad:
1 From the idle screen, press m. 2 Press *.
If you press a key while the keypad is locked, instructions for unlocking the keypad display briefly.
To unlock the keypad:
1 From the idle screen, press m. 2 Press *.
While the keypad is locked, you can respond to incomin g calls, messages, and alerts just as you do when the keypad is not locked. When finished, press e to return to the idle screen. The keypad remains l ocked.
You also have the option of setting your phone to automatically lock the keypad if there has been no activity for a specified time.

The keypad can be set to lock in 5, 10, 15 or 20 minutes if the keypad is not touched during the specifie d ti me. T o tu r n th e aut o l ock o ff, r epe at s tep 3 and sel ect Off.

Antenna

The retractable antenna on your i305 phone is design ed to be extended during calls.
To extend the antenna, pull gently on the end until the antenna is fully extended and clicks into position.
When finished with a call, retract the antenna by pushing gently on the end until the antenna cli c ks into pl ace.
To optimize your phone’s performan ce, extend the antenna when you make or receive a call, and avoid t ouching the antenna with any bo dy part.
Important: Failure to fully extend or retract the
antenna until the antenna clicks into place causes severely degraded performance, which may result in missed calls, dropped calls, or garbled audio.

Wireless Local Number Portability: Bringing Your Phone Number From Another Carrier
If you are bringing your phon e number from another carrier, your new phone will be active as soon as you receive it. Nextel will prov ide you with a temporary phone number so tha t you can beg in using your phone immediately. Once the number you have brought to Nextel is ac tivated, your temporary phone number wil l be deactivated and service with your previous carrier will be cancelled automatically. You will receive a text message on your Nextel phone letting you know that activation is complete. Simply turn your phone off and back on again to complete activation.
Here is additional information you need to be aware of until the number you have brought to Nextel is active on the Nextel network:

Nextel® Voice Mail

We suggest you set up your voice mail box after the number you brought to Nextel is active on your Nextel phone and your temporary phone number is deactivated. If you set up your voice mail box prior
to this, all messages and all settings (including your greeting and password) will be lo st when the number you have brought to Nextel becomes active.

Text Messaging

During the a ct ivat i on pr oce ss , i t i s p os sibl e t hat t ext messages may not be properly routed to your Nextel phone.

911 Calls

Nextel co ntinues to make efforts to ensure that all 911 call s are min imal ly imp ac ted b y th i s proc es s. If you make a call to 911 from your tempor ary phone number and the call fails, the 911 emergency response cen ter wil l not b e a bl e to ca l l you b ac k on your Nextel phone i f in the meantime your Nextel phone ha s been pr o gram med w ith y our p erma ne nt phone nu mber. As with any wireless 911 call, if your call is disconnected before location and details have been provided , be sure to call 911 again an d advise that you were disconnected.

Making Calls

Your i305 phone makes two types of calls: digital cellul ar phone calls and Direct Connect calls. With Direct Connect calls, you use your phone as a long-range, digital walkie-tal kie.

Phone Calls

1 Enter the number you want to call. 2 Press s to place the call. 3 Press e to end the call.

Direct Connect® Calls

1 Enter the Direct Co nnect numb er you want to
call.
2 Press and hold the PTT button on the si de of
your phon e. Beg in talk ing af ter you r phon e emits a chirping sound.
3 Release the PTT button to listen.
Tip: To let someone know you want to talk to
him or her on a Direct C onnect ca ll, send a call alert. See “Call Alerts” on page 26.

Dialing Direct Connect® Numbers

Every Direct Connect numbe r has 3 parts — an area ID, a network ID, and a member ID — with an asteris k bet we en e ach of t hese p art s. For e xa mple: 999*999*9999.
When you place a Dire ct Connect call, you must enter the whole Dir ect Connect number including the aster isks.
Tip: When you stor e a D i rec t Con ne ct nu mb er in
Contacts it is good practice to include the whole Direct Connect number including the asterisks in case y ou travel wi th your phone, or another Direct Connect user whom you are trying to reach tr avels with their phone, outside of y our network.

Receiving Calls

Phone Calls

When you receive a phone call, your phone rings, vibrates, or lights up its backlight.
Answering
Press s. -or- Press A unde r Yes. -or- Press any number key.

To answer a call by pressing any number key, you must have the Any Key Ans feature t urned on (see “Phone Calls Features” on page 86).

Direct Connect® Calls

When you receive a Direct Connect call, yo ur phone emits a chirping sound or vibra tes.

When you make a call, call icons appear in the text area of the phone’s display.

When you miss a call, this icon appears in the text area:
V You missed a phone call.

Ways to Enter Calls

To enter the number you want to call, you can:
Use the numbers on the keypad
Select the number from the recent calls list
Select the number from Contacts
Redial the last phone number called
Use Speed Dial or Turbo Dial

From the Keypad

To enter the number you want to call, pres s the numbers on the keypad.
If you make a mistake:
To clear a digit, pre ss A under Delete.
To clear all digits, press and hold A under Delete.
To insert or delete a digit anywhere in the string
of digits you have entered, scroll left or right.
To cancel , press e.

From the Recent Calls List

The recent calls list stores the last 20 calls you made or received.
To select a numbe r from the recent calls list as the number you want to ca ll:
1 From the idle screen, scroll down. -or-
From the main menu, select Recent Calls.
2 Scroll to the name or number you want to call.

From Contacts

If you have numbers st ored in Cont acts, you can use these numbers to make calls. For infor mation on entering numbers into Contacts, see “Creating Entries” on page 35.

2 Scroll to the name or number you want to call.
Tip: To find Contacts entries faster, use the
keypad to enter th e first lett er of the name .
3 Place the call now. -or-

If you are making a Direct Connect call, your phone places t he call t o the Dire ct Conn ect n umber st ore d in the Contacts entry, even if the Direct Connect icon is not dis p la yed.
If you are making a phone call:
Your phone places the call to the phone number assign ed to the Contacts t y pe displa yed.
If the Contacts type displayed is not a phone number, your phone places the call to the phone number stored in the Contacts entry.
