Read these instructions carefully before using the system; note the warnings on the unit and in the
operating instructions and always keep the operating instructions close to hand. If you sell or give
the device away, make sure you also hand over these instructions.
Never put electrical units into children's hands
Never allow children to use electrical devices unattended.
If swallowed, batteries may endanger life. Therefore keep the unit and batteries out of the reach of children. If a battery is swallowed, seek medical
assistance immediately.
Keep plastic packaging out of the reach of children. There is a risk of asphyxiation.
Set the unit up safely
Place the unit on a sturdy, level surface. It is not designed for use in rooms
that are very humid (e.g. bathrooms). Always make sure that
there is adequate ventilation;
there are no direct heat sources (e.g. heaters) that could affect the unit;
the unit is not in direct sunlight;
avoid contact with liquids and water (e.g. do not place vases close to
the unit);
the unit is not placed close to magnetic fields (e.g. televisions or other
loudspeakers);
naked flames such as lit candles are not placed near the unit.
Leave access to the power connection
Only plug the unit into a mains plug (230 V ~ 50 Hz) that is easy to reach
and is close to the place where you have set the unit up. The mains plug
must be freely accessible so that you can unplug the unit quickly if you
should need to do so.
Do not use extension cables so as to avoid falls.

Page 3
Never undertake your own repairs
If the plug, cable or unit is damaged pull the plug immediately from the
mains.
Never try to open and/or repair the unit yourself. There is a risk of electric
shock. If there is a defect contact our service centre or other suitable specialist workshop.
Storms
Pull the plug and antenna cable out of the mains if you are away for a long
period of time or there is a storm.
CD player
The CD player is a first class laser product. The unit has a safety system that
prevents dangerous laser rays escaping from the unit during normal use.
In order to avoid eye injuries never manipulate or damage the unit's security system.
SAFETYINSTRUCTIONS
Dispose of batteries in an environmentally appropriate way
Do not put used batteries in the household rubbish. The batteries must be
deposited at a collection point for used batteries.
Cleaning the unit
Before cleaning, pull the plug out of the mains. Use a dry, soft cloth to
clean the unit. Avoid the use of chemical solutions and cleaning products
because these may damage the unit's surface and/or labels.

GENERALINFORMATION
About DVD
DVD - Digital Versatile Disc - is a digital medium that saves information.
DVDs are marked with one of the following symbols.
There are different types of DVD with different memory capacities depending on the how the information is stored.
DVD structure
Video DVDs are divided into titles and chapters. A DVD can have several
titles, which may in turn be made up of several chapters. The titles and
chapters are each numbered sequentially:
The first title of a DVD usually comprises licence instructions and manufacturer's information. The next title is usually the film itself. Other titles may
include such items as "making of" documentaries, film previews or information on the actors.
Languages and sub-titlesUp to eight languages and sub-titles in up to 32 languages can be stored
on DVDs. The languages and sub-titles can be played in any combination
for playback.
PerspectiveIn some DVDs it is even possible to change the perspective if the film was
recorded from different camera positions.
Regional codes
As a result of the global sales strategy a code has been developed for DVDs
that allows the recording only to be played on units bought in certain regions.
This code is based on a system that divides the world into six regio ns. E urope is i n Zon e 2 so y our D VD player will only play DVDs
that have the regional code 2. The regional code is printed on the
DVD packaging (refer to the following logo).
Apart from DVDs with the regional code 2, the unit will only play DVDs
with the regional code 0 (suitable for any DVD player).
If you find problems when playing certain DVDs make sure that the
DVD has the country code 2 or 0.

Other playable formats
MP3
The MP3 format is a Windows compression format for audio data. MP3
files have to be saved with the file extension *.mp3 so that they can be recognized.
In contrast to traditional audio CDs, MP3 CDs can be sub-divided into directories (folders, albums) and files (tracks, titles) - just like a data CD for
your computer.
This unit recognizes up to 999 titles. Folders and titles are read in alphabetical order.
MPEG4 and DiVX
MPEG4 is a compression technology for multimedia/video data ("MPEG" =
"Moving Picture Experts Group").
DiVX is a brand name for a video compression-decompression technology
based on the MPEG4 format. This unit supports DiVX 4 and DiVX 5.
GENERALINFORMATION
Available surround sound formats
The unit can read two surround sound formats.
Dolby Digital 5.1
In Dolby Digital sound format the audio material is saved digitally. To do
this up to five separate full frequency audio channels (front left and right,
centre, rear left and right) and an effect or depth channel (5.1) are saved
separately. Sound media with the Dolby Digital format are shown by these
trademarks.
Because each channel is completely independent a realistic sound is created with a "three-dimensional" listening sensation whereby the sound is
given distance, movement and a relative position in the room.
Your unit can read and decode this audio data and outputs to the 5.1 outputs. On the other hand the original signal can be sent to an external decoder/amplifier via the digital outputs.
dts (Digital Theatre Systems)
The dts abbreviation is used for a less frequently used sound format in
which up to 6 (5.1) separate channels are saved to a sound medium.
Sound media with the dts format are shown by these trademarks.
Your unit can read this audio data and sends it to the digital outputs ("DIGITAL OUT") for decoding.

CONNECTIONSANDCONNECTIONOPTIONS
The unit can be connected in various ways to other input and output devices:
to a television
to a video recorder
to a receiver, e.g. stereo system
Make sure that all units are switched off before connecting them.
Only connect the units to the mains when the other connections are
complete.
Setting up the unit
Place the unit on a sturdy, level surface. Always make sure that
there is adequate ventilation
no sources of heat affect the unit;
the unit is not in direct sunlight;
you avoid contact with liquids or water
the unit is not placed close to magnetic fields (e.g. televisions or other
loudspeakers).
Some aggressive furniture paints can weaken the unit's rubber feet. If necessary, place the units on a suitable underlay.
The DVD player connections
Your recorder has standard video, SCART, S-video and component outputs. The S-video cable provides better image quality than the video cinch
cable. In turn the SCART cable provides better image quality than the Svideo cable.
quality is achieved via the component outputs. An increased image frequency is output using the Progressive Scan procedure. This reduces flickering images to a minimum and displays movements in a more fluid manner.
It goes without saying that your TV must be able to process this format for
it to be used. The PROGRESSIVE SCAN function does not work with a
SCART or other video connection.
Basic settings for video mode
The basic setting installed at the factory for the video mode (V-MODE button) is
to select a different video mode (refer to refer to “Video mode”, P. 14).
After connecting the DVD player and selecting the video channel, if you
can not see an image or see a very poor or heavily colour cast image, select
a different video mode using the

Connection options between the DVD player and television
Connection with the television via the SCART cable
The SCART cable is the simplest connection between the DVD player and
the television. As long as your television can process RGB signals you will
get a very good quality image from this option.
Connection with the television via the S-VHS cable
If your television does not have a SCART connection you can connect with
the unit via the S-VHS cable (S-VIDEO socket). This will provide good image quality.
Please note the colour codes for left/right on the cinch plugs.

SPEAKER SETUP
If you use the analogue 5.1 output you change the loudspeaker settings
from this menu.
DOWNMIX
LT/RT: the left and the right channel are used.
STEREO: Stereo sound is produced. Select this setting if you are not
using the analogue 5.1 outputs.
OFF: Activate the analogue 5.1 outputs.
Only when the downmix is set to OFF are the other menu points activated because it is only appropriate to make settings for the loudspeakers if this is the case:
Switch on/off loudspeaker groups
You can switch the individual loudspeaker groups on and off from the
CENTER, REAR and SUBWOOFER menu points.
Channel delay
If you connect separate loudspeakers they should ideally be set up in a circle (refer to left side of the diagram). If this is not possible you can compensate for differences in the circle shape here.
In the example below (refer to the right side of the figure) the left and right
rear loudspeakers are moved by 100 cm.
SETTINGSINTHE SETUP MENU
` Use the navigation button to enter the graphical field next to the
REAR DELAY entry. Use the or button to increase or de-
crease the value.
For a difference of 100 cm select 3 ms.
The maximum variation for the centre loudspeaker is 5 ms (milliseconds),
for the rear loudspeakers 15 ms.
The circle line is defined by the front loudspeakers. That is why you can not
select the front loudspeakers.
TEST TONE: Here you can hear a buzzing sound from each in-
dividual loudspeaker. Use this function to set the
size and delay individually.

use to set the volume difference for quiet and loud passages with a scale

(cinema sound). This setting is only appropriate if nobody
will be disturbed.

quieter and quiet passages are louder. This setting is appropriate, for example, at night.
