When set to DIGITAL . . .
The DIGITAL IN connector specified in the INPUT SETUP menu is sent to the ZONE 2 AUDIO OUTPUTS.
Only PCM digital input sources are compatible with the ZONE 2 AUDIO OUTPUTS.
Audio will not be available in Zone 2 when a Dolby Digital, dts(-ES), or unknown digital input source is present.
When set to DMIX . . .
A 2-channel downmixed version of Main Zone audio is sent to the ZONE 2 AUDIO OUTPUTS. Downmixes can be generated for Dolby Digital, dts(-ES), and 5.1 analog input sources. To generate a downmix, the input that is selected in Zone 2 must also be selected in the Main Zone (e.g. DVD1). Otherwise, the ZONE 2 AUDIO OUTPUTS will mute. Downmixes cannot be generated when the 5.1a BYPASS listening mode is selected in the Main Zone.
It is recommended to set the ZONE2 IN parameter to DMIX when recording from a DVD player without built-in Dolby Digital or dts(-ES) decoding to a VCR or PVR (i.e. Tivo® or Replay TV®).
Note:
For Dolby Digital input sources, it is recommended to set the ZONE2 IN parameter to analog. For dts(-ES) input sources, it is recommended to set the ZONE2 IN parameter to DMIX. When set to DIGITAL, the unit recognizes dts-encoded CDs as audio signals (not data signals) and outputs loud digital noise from the ZONE 2 AUDIO OUTPUTS .
Note:
If the INPUT SELECT parameter on the ZONE 2 ADV menu is set to AUTO in Software Version 1.0, the ZONE2 IN parameter will be set to DMIX when Software Version 1.1 is installed. Press the SHIFT button, then the STAT button to access the first page of the STATUS menu for the active listening mode. Press the STAT button a second time to access the second page of the menu. Press the STAT button a third time to exit the menu. (If the STATUS menu does not include a second page, pressing the STAT button a second time will exit the menu.)
The 5.1 BYPASS listening mode is now called the 5.1a BYPASS listening mode. Likewise, the 5.1 BYPASS STATUS menu is now called the 5.1a BYPASS STATUS menu. Level meters are no longer available on the 5.1a BYPASS STATUS and 2CH BYPASS STATUS menus.
An alphabetical glossary of listening mode parameters begins in the next column and on page 5-20 of the MC-12 User Guide in the next column. An alphabetical glossary of all listening mode parameters begins on page 5-20 of the MC-12 User Guide (Rev 1).
Note:
Remote control MENU arrows can be used to scroll listening mode STATUS menu parameters when the MAIN command bank is active. STATUS menu parameters are not adjustable.
NEW LISTENING MODE PARAMETERS
This glossary contains additions and revisions to the listening mode parameter descriptions that appear on page 5-20 of the MC-12 User Guide (Rev 1).
2.0 ENCODING (MATRIX, NONE)
The 2.0 ENCODING parameter has been added to the DOLBY D STATUS menu. When the parameter value is MATRIX, matrix-encoding is present in the input signal. When the parameter value is NONE, no matrix-encoding is present in the input signal.
BIT RATE (32 to 3072kbps)
The BIT RATE parameter has been added to the DOLBY D and dts(-ES) STATUS menus. It indicates the rate at which the input signal is encoded. A higher bit rate indicates that less compression was used during the encoding process.
CENTER MIX LVL (-3.0dB, -4.5dB, -6.0dB)
The CENTER MIX LVL parameter has been added to the DOLBY D STATUS menu. It indicates the relative level of the center channel that was used during the mixing process.
DIALOG OFFSET (-31 to 0dB)
The DIALOG OFFSET parameter has been added to the DOLBY D STATUS menu. It indicates the dialog normalization value applied to the input signal. Dolby Digital input sources reproduce dialog at 31 decibels below full-scale (-31dBFS). When the dialog normalization value of the incoming signal is higher or lower, the DIALOG OFFSET parameter indicates the amount of adjustment the unit makes to normalize dialog to -31dBFS.

MIX ROOM (SMALL, LARGE)
The MIX ROOM parameter has been added to the DOLBY D STATUS menu. It indicates the size of the mixing room that was used. When the parameter value is LARGE, it is recommended to set the RE-EQUALIZATION parameter for the selected listening mode to ON (if available).
SURR ROLLOFF (500Hz to 20kHz)
When the SURR ROLLOFF (Surround Rolloff) parameter is set within its 500Hz to 20kHz range, the unit applies a highfrequency rolloff to the SIDE L/R and REAR L/R outputs. This rolloff is only applied to output signals generated by the unit. Signals above the rolloff that are part of the source recording are passed through without filtering.
SURROUND EX (AUTO, ON, OFF)
The SURROUND EX parameter provides control of the Surround EX decoding feature. When set to AUTO, the unit engages Surround EX decoding for flagged Surround EX input sources. When set to ON, the unit forces Surround EX decoding for all input sources. When set to OFF, the unit does not engage Surround EX decoding for any input sources.
SURROUND MIX LVL (+0.0dB, -3.0dB, -6.0dB)
The SURROUND MIX LVL parameter has been added to the DOLBY D STATUS menu. It indicates the relative level of surround channels that were used during the mixing process.
WORD LENGTH (16bits, 20bits, 24bits)
The WORD LENGTH parameter has been added to the dts(-ES) STATUS menu. It indicates the word length of the audio data present in the input signal.
New Listening Mode Parameters (continued from page 11)
ES DECODING (AUTO, ON, OFF)
The ES DECODING parameter has been added to the dts(-ES) L7 FILM, dts(-ES) L7 MUSIC, dts(-ES) THX, dts(-ES), and dts(-ES) 2-CHAN listening mode menus. It provides control of the ES decoding feature. When set to AUTO, the unit engages ES decoding for flagged dts-ES input sources. When set to ON, the unit forces ES decoding for all dts input sources. When set to OFF, the unit does not engage ES decoding for any dts input sources.
Note:
When the ES DECODING parameter is set to ON for dts 5.1-channel input sources, the SB level meter will appear on the dts(-ES) STATUS menu.
ES ENCODING (DISCRETE, MATRIX, NONE)
The ES DECODE parameter on the dts(-ES) STATUS menu is now called the ES ENCODING parameter. When the parameter value is DISCRETE, a discrete 6.1-channel input source is present. When the parameter value is MATRIX, a matrix 6.1-channel input source is present. When the parameter value is NONE, a standard dts input source with no ES encoding is present.
EX ENCODED (YES, NO)
The EX ENCODED parameter has been added to the DOLBY D STATUS menu. When the parameter value is YES, the input source is flagged for Dolby Digital EX encoding. When the parameter value is NO, the input source is not flagged for Dolby Digital EX encoding. Dolby Digital EX-encoded input sources that have not been properly flagged cannot be automatically detected.

The ZONE 2 AUDIO OUTPUTS will mute when the ZONE2 IN parameter on the INPUT SETUP menu is set to DIGITAL or DMIX.
The RECORD AUDIO OUTPUTS will mute when the RECORD IN parameter on the INPUT SETUP menu is set to DIGITAL or DMIX.
4. When a Dolby Digital input source is sent to the RECORD AUDIO OUTPUTS, toggling the setting of the DIGITAL BYPASS parameter on the RECORD ADV menu will cause a loud burst of digital noise. It is recommended to stop the Dolby Digital input source before toggling the parameter setting.
5. To accommodate THX level requirements, the MAIN AUDIO OUTPUTS labeled FRONT L/R are about 2dB lower than the ZONE 2 and RECORD AUDIO OUTPUTS when an analog input source is present and about 8dB lower than the ZONE 2 and RECORD AUDIO OUTPUTS when a digital input source is present. The ZONE 2 and RECORD AUDIO OUTPUTS are the same as the input signal.
6. When the 5.1 analog input is selected, speaker setup menu parameters set to NONE on the CUSTOM SETUP or THX SETUP menu will not be redirected to other channels. It is recommended that DVD-A and SACD players are set up with the same speaker configuration as the MC-12/MC-12 Balanced.
7. When the INTERNAL NOISE TEST is in process, it is possible to manually select a speaker just as the unit is about to automatically scroll to that speaker. This might cause the unit to send the noise signal to both outputs. If this occurs, reselect the desired speaker.
8. Toggling the setting of the SURROUND EX parameter produces low-level clicks in the front speakers.
9. When the DIG OUT RATE parameter setting is adjusted, the RECORD AUDIO OUTPUT labelled S/PDIF will mute momentarily – even if the DIGITAL BYPASS parameter is set to ON. The DIG OUT RATE and DIGITAL BYPASS parameters are located on the RECORD ADV menu.

15. The level meters on the ANLG IN LVL menu might not indicate accurate input levels when a 5.1 analog input source is present and the ANALOG BYPASS parameter on the MAIN ADV menu is set to ON.
16. The level meters on the ANLG IN LVL menu and the listening mode STATUS menus appear in combinations of green, yellow, and red when the on-screen display has a blue-screen background. Green indicates low input levels, yellow indicates normal input levels, and red indicates the onset of overload.
17. References to the INPUT GAIN parameter on page 3-7 of the MC-12 User Guide (Rev 1) refer to the AUTO GAIN parameter on the ANLG IN LVL menu.
18. The factory-default setting of the COMPONENT OSD parameter on the MAIN ADV menu is OFF. When set to ON, the component on-screen display appears on a full blue-screen background. See page 3-14 of the MC-12 User Guide (Rev 1).
19. When the REAR L/R parameter on the CUSTOM SETUP menu is set to NONE, the unit redirects rear channel signals to the SIDE L/R outputs. See page 3-21 of the MC-12 User Guide (Rev 1).
20. The SUB LIMITERS menu has been renamed the BASS PEAK LIMITERS menu. The menu and its parameters still function as described on pages 3-28 and 3-29 of the MC-12 User Guide (Rev 1).
21. The MONO listening mode menu has been updated to include a SUB L/R LVL parameter and a CUSTOM menu option. This menu is shown on page 21 of this document.
Errata Notes (continued from page 13)
10. When the MAIN command bank is selected, pressing the 7/5 button on the remote control will not toggle between 7 and 5-channel playback if the REAR L/R or SIDE L/R parameters on the CUSTOM SETUP menu are set to NONE. The message, "FEATURE UNAVAILABLE DUE TO CONFIGURATION" will appear on the on-screen and front panel displays.
11. When the SHIFT command bank is selected, pressing the THX button on the remote control selects the appropriate THX listening mode for the current input. Pressing the THX button again adjusts the SURROUND EX parameter, cycling through the AUTO, ON, and OFF settings.
12. When the SHIFT command bank is selected, pressing the dts button on the remote control selects the appropriate dts(-ES) listening mode for the current input. Pressing the dts button again adjusts the ES DECODING parameter, cycling through the AUTO, ON, and OFF settings.
13. The ANLG IN LVL parameter on the RECORD ADV menu affects the digital RECORD AUDIO OUTPUT labelled S/PDIF. This parameter prevents the internal analog-to-digital converter from overloading. It can be adjusted while listening to an input source.
14. The level meters on the ANLG IN LVL menu indicate signal levels for the selected input, whether an analog or digital input source is present. For example, the level meters will indicate digital input signal levels when a digital input source is present.

21. The 5.1 MONO, 5.1 MONO LOGIC, and 5.1 MONO SURR
listening modes are designed for playback of Dolby Digital mono input sources. When a Dolby Digital 1.0 input source is present, the unit will automatically select the 5.1 MONO LOGIC listening mode. The unit will not automatically select
5.1 MONO LOGIC for other Dolby Digital mono input sources.
22. The rear panel TRIGGER OUTPUTS will be deactivated when
the unit is placed into standby. However, when the TRIGGER parameters on the TRIGGER SETUP menu are set to REMOTE ONLY, the corresponding TRIGGER OUTPUT will not be activated when the unit is powered on. Instead, this TRIGGER OUTPUT must be activated using the remote control commands described on page 2-12 of the MC-12 User Guide (Rev 1).
23. The Mute button LED lights whenever mute is activated, either
automatically or manually. For example, the unit will briefly activate mute when switching input sources or listening modes.
24. When the preferred listening mode selection parameters on
the INPUT SETUP menu are set to USE LAST, the unit will revert to the previously-selected listening mode when the current input is deselected, then reselected. However, when the 2-CHANNEL listening mode is selected with the 2CH button on the remote control, the unit will revert to the listening mode that was selected prior to the 2-CHANNEL listening mode.
