HP JetAdmin Printer Management
Software
Introduction
Using HP JetAdmin and other HP supplied software,
administrators can configure and manage print servers and
network printers, provide better overall printer performance, and
share printers in mixed-LAN environments.
The HP JetDirect print servers support multiple protocols and
multiple network operating systems. The HP JetDirect internal
print server is installed in HP printers with a network I/O slot and
allows you to connect a printer directly to the network. The
HP JetDirect external print servers have up to three parallel ports
that connect one to three parallel printers to a network.
NoteUnless otherwise specified, the term print server in
this manual refers to the HP JetDirect print servers
and not a separate computer running print server
software.

Installation Overview
This guide explains how to configure your printer on a supported
network using HP JetAdmin. Each chapter of this guide supports
a different network operating system (such as Novell, Windows NT,
or UNIX) in conjunction with a client operating system.
1. This guide assumes that you have the following:
■
A good working knowledge of your network operating system
and your network utilities.
■
A supported network operating system.
■
A fully operational system.
■
Access to the supervisor account as a network administrator,
or access to an account that has supervisor and print server
configuration privileges.
2. Before you use this guide, complete the following tasks:
■
Make sure your network is up and running.
■
Install and set up the printer according to the instructions in
the printer’s getting started guide or user’s guide.
■
Install any options in the printer (such as a duplexing unit for
two-sided printing).
■
If your HP JetDirect print server came pre-installed in the
printer, follow the instructions in the printer’s getting started
guide or user’s guide to connect the print server to the network.
■
If your HP JetDirect print server did not come pre-installed in
the printer, follow the instructions in the hardware
installation guide for your HP JetDirect print server.
3. Depending on the network environment (network operating
system and client system), install the HP JetDirect software on
either the administrator’s computer or the network server.
■
If the HP JetAdmin software is provided with your printer
software, follow the instructions in your printer’s getting
started guide or user’s guide to install the software.
■
If the HP JetAdmin software is provided on your HP JetDirect
print server CD-ROM or if you downloaded the software from
HP’s web site, follow the instructions in the appropriate
chapter of this guide.

4. Determine how your network is configured and the network
protocols that your printer will use (such as peer-to-peer,
client/server, using TCP/IP or IPX/SPX. Then, using the
appropriate chapter in this guide for your network environment,
configure the printer on the network.
5. Distribute the installation software for the printer (printer
drivers) to each end user or place disk images of the installation
software in a public directory so end users can install the printer

Configuring a Printer in Queue
Server Mode (NDS)
Novell Directory Services (NDS) gives you the ability to have
NetWare 4.x print queues and print servers in any NDS context.
The actual print queue, printer, and print server objects are created
using the Novell NWADMIN or PCONSOLE utilities. The
HP JetDirect print server is then assigned to this configuration
with the HP JetAdmin software using the following procedure.
Before you configure the HP JetAdmin software, make sure the
following tasks have been performed:
●
Internal print servers: The print server is installed in the printer
and the printer is connected to a network.
●
External print servers: The print server has power and is
connected to the printer’s parallel port and network.
●
The printer is turned on, is online, and you have printed an
HP JetDirect configuration page.
If you have not printed a configuration page from your printer, see
the hardware installation guide for your print server or your
printer’s getting started guide for instructions.
NoteIf you are servicing NDS and Bindery queues on the
same file servers, the HP JetDirect print server will
log onto the server twice, taking two user licenses.
There are two main parts to configuring the print server for NDS:
●
Create the print queue, printer, and print server objects using
Novell NWADMIN and assign the objects to one another.
●
Use the HP JetAdmin software to configure the print server.

Configuring a Printer in Queue
Server Mode (Bindery)
You can configure a printer in queue server mode on a NetWare 3.x
and 4.x (Bindery) network. This mode supports 16 file servers and
64 print queues per HP JetDirect print server port. This mode also
prevents other printers from accessing data sent to the configured
queue(s) without SUPERVISOR’s intervention.
Before you configure the HP JetAdmin software, make sure the
following tasks have been performed:
●
Internal print servers: The print server is installed in the printer
and the printer is connected to a network.
●
External print servers: The print server has power and is
connected to the printer’s parallel port and network.

Configuring a Printer in Remote
Printer Mode (Bindery)
You can configure a printer in remote printer mode on a NetWare
3.x and 4.x (Bindery) network. Remote Printer mode requires a
Novell NetWare print server, but allows implementation of forms
and provides the best integration with NetWare print utilities (for
example, PCONSOLE or NWADMIN). Using PSERVER.EXE, the
print server consumes one user license for all printers. Using
PSERVER.NLM, the print server does not consume any license
slots.
Before you configure the HP JetAdmin software, make sure the
following tasks have been performed:
●
Internal print servers: The print server is installed in the printer
and the printer is connected to a network.
●
External print servers: The print server has power and is
connected to the printer’s parallel port and network.

Configuring a Printer in Queue
Server Mode (Bindery)
You can configure a printer in queue server mode on a
NetWare 3.x and 4.x (Bindery) network. This mode supports 16 file
servers and 64 print queues per HP JetDirect print server port. This
mode also prevents other printers from accessing data sent to the
configured queue(s) without SUPERVISOR's intervention.
Before you configure the HP JetAdmin software, make sure the
following tasks have been performed:
●
Internal print servers: The print server is installed in the printer
and the printer is connected to a network.
●
External print servers: The print server has power and is
connected to the printer’s parallel port and network.
●
The printer is turned on, is online, and you have printed a
JetDirect configuration page.
If you have not printed an HP JetDirect configuration page from
your printer, see the hardware installation guide for your print
server or your printer's getting started guide for instructions.

same file servers, the HP JetDirect print server will
log onto the server twice, taking two user licenses.
1. Log onto the network with Supervisor privileges.
2. Click Start, Programs, HP JetAdmin Utilities, then click

File Server and Print Queue Support
In Queue Server mode, the HP JetAdmin software supports up to
16 print servers and 64 print queues. To view and modify all file
servers and print queues, log onto all the file servers with Supervisor
privileges. If you are not logged onto a file server that is configured
for a printer, the file server's name is followed by
Configuring a Printer in Remote
Printer Mode (Bindery)
You can configure a printer in remote printer mode on a
NetWare 3.x and 4.x (Bindery) network. Remote Printer mode
requires a Novell NetWare print server, but allows implementation
of forms and provides the best integration with NetWare print
utilities (for example, PCONSOLE or NWADMIN). Using
PSERVER.EXE, the print server consumes one user license for all
printers. Using PSERVER.NLM, the print server does not consume
any license slots.
Before you configure the HP JetAdmin software, make sure the
following tasks have been performed:
●
Internal print servers: The print server is installed in the printer
and the printer is connected to a network.
●
External print servers: The print server has power and is
connected to the printer’s parallel port and network.

This procedure tests the ability of the HP JetDirect print server to
service the Novell queue. It also bypasses the Novell client software
as well as the Windows printer driver and the Windows operating
system. If the file prints by inserting it into the queue, then the HP
JetDirect print server is working properly.
Job Details
Job Details enables you to view and delete your own print jobs and
provides information on the status of your print jobs in the queue.
With HP JetAdmin (version 3.3 or above), Job Details includes the
following information:

Networks (TCP/IP or IPX/SPX)
Introduction
HP JetAdmin software (version 3.3 and above) has three
components to install for Microsoft Windows NT. (Windows 2000
requires HP JetAdmin version 3.42.) The following components are
discussed in this chapter:
●
HP JetDirect Port
●
HP Desktop Status (Microsoft Windows NT version 4.0 or
above only)
●

HP JetDirect Port
The HP JetDirect Port allows network administrators to connect a
port to a network printer and to configure the HP JetDirect print
server for that printer.
After assigning an HP JetDirect Port to a printer on a server, assign
the printer one or more drivers and a share name. Users can then
add remote printers to their
name of the printer on the server. See the sections “Configuring
Windows NT/2000 for Printing” and “Connecting to a Printer from
a Client” in this chapter for more information.

small printer icon in the Taskbar. The icon is green if the printer is
ready, yellow if there is a warning condition (such as toner low), or
red if there is an error condition (such as the printer is out of paper).
You can also access Summary and Properties information by
right-clicking on the desired printer icon and selecting the
