USB cable
• Please make sure you use a USB 2.0 cable (Type A/B) that is no longer than 2 metres.
• DO NOT connect the interface cable at this time. Connecting the interface cable is done during MFL-Pro installation process.
• When you use a USB cable, make sure you connect it to the USB port of your computer and not to a USB port on a keyboard or non-powered USB hub.

Use a straight-through Category 5 (or greater) twisted-pair cable for 10BASE-T or 100BASE-TX Fast Ethernet Network.

Install the drum unit and

assemblies
a Unpack the four drum unit and toner cartridge
assemblies and gently shake each of them from side to side several times to distribute the toner evenly inside the assembly.
c Slide all four of the drum unit and toner
cartridge assemblies into the machine as shown in the illustration. Make sure that you match the toner cartridge colour to the same colour label on the machine.
b Remove the protective cover by pulling on the
tab as shown in the illustration.
Note
Do not touch the surface of the packing film. It may contain toner powder which can stain your skin and clothing.

d Close the top cover of the machine.

To avoid print quality problems, DO NOT touch the surface of the drum unit.

Load paper in the paper
tray
a Pull the paper tray completely out of the
machine.
d Put paper in the tray, and make sure that the
paper is below the maximum paper mark a. The side to be printed on must be face down.
IMPORTANT
Make sure the paper guides touch the sides of the paper so it will feed correctly.
b While pressing the green paper-guide release
lever a, slide the paper guides to fit the paper size you are loading in the tray. Make sure that the guides are firmly in the slots.
c Fan the stack of paper well to avoid paper jams
and misfeeds.
e Put the paper tray firmly back in the machine.
Make sure that it is completely inserted into the machine.
f Unfold the support flap a to prevent paper
from sliding off the face-down output tray.

Connect the power cord

Choose your language

DO NOT connect the interface cable yet.
a Make sure that the machine’s power switch is
off. Connect the AC power cord to the machine.
b Plug the AC power cord into an AC outlet. Turn
the power switch on.
a After turning the power switch on, the LCD

The BRAdmin Light software will be installed automatically when you install the printer driver. If you have already installed the printer driver, you do not have to install BRAdmin Light again. Set your IP address, Subnet Mask and Gateway using BRAdmin Light

• If you have a DHCP/BOOTP/RARP server in your network, you do not have to do the following operation. The machine will automatically obtain its own IP address.
• Make sure that version 1.4.2 or greater of Java™ client software is installed on your computer.
• The default password for the machine is ‘access’. You can use BRAdmin Light to change this password.
a Double-click Macintosh HD on your desktop.
c Double-click the file BRAdmin Light.jar and
run the software. BRAdmin Light will then search for new devices automatically.
d Double-click the unconfigured device.
b Choose Library, Printers, Brother and then
Utilities.
e Choose STATIC for Boot Method. Enter the
IP Address, Subnet Mask and Gateway, and then click OK.

Web Based Management (web browser)

The Brother print server is equipped with a web server that allows you to monitor its status or change some of its configuration settings, using HTTP (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol).
Note
• The User Name is ‘admin’ and the default password is ‘access’. You can use a web browser to change this password.

You can print the Network Configuration List to confirm the current network settings. To print the Network Configuration List:
a Turn on the machine and wait until the machine
is in the Ready state.
b Press Menu, 5, 4.

Restore the network settings to factory default

To restore all network settings of the internal Print/Scan server to factory default, please follow the steps below.
a Make sure the machine is not operating, then
disconnect all the cables from the machine (except the power cord).
See Chapter 11 of the Network User’s Guide.
b Press Menu, 4, 0.

Choosing a location

Put your machine on a flat, level, stable surface that is free of vibration and shocks, such as a desk. Put the machine near a standard grounded electrical socket. Choose a location where the temperature remains between 10 °C and 32.5 °C and the humidity is between 20% to 80% (without condensation).
WARNING
• DO NOT expose the machine to direct sunlight, excessive heat, open flames, salty or corrosive gasses, moisture or dust.
• DO NOT place the machine near heaters, air conditioners, refrigerators, water or chemicals.
CAUTION

• Avoid placing your machine in a high-traffic area.
• Avoid placing your machine on a carpet.
• DO NOT connect your machine to electrical sockets controlled by wall switches or automatic timers, or to the same circuit as large appliances that might disrupt the power supply.
• Disruption of power can delete information from the machine’s memory.
• Make sure cables leading to the machine do not constitute a trip hazard.

To use the machine safely

Please keep these instructions for later reference and read them before attempting any maintenance.
WARNING
There are high voltage electrodes inside the machine. Before you clean the inside of the machine, make sure you have unplugged the power cord from the electrical socket. Doing this will prevent an electrical shock.
DO NOT handle the plug with wet hands. Doing this might cause an electrical shock.
Always make sure the plug is fully inserted.
This product must be installed near an electrical socket that is easily accessible. In case of an emergency, you must unplug the power cord from the electrical socket to shut off the power completely.
DO NOT use flammable substances near the machine. DO NOT use any type of spray to clean the inside or outside of the machine. Doing this may cause a fire or electrical shock. Refer to Routine maintenance in the User’s Guide for how to clean the machine.
DO NOT use a vacuum cleaner to clean up scattered toner. Doing this might cause the toner dust to ignite inside the vacuum cleaner, potentially starting a fire. Please carefully clean the toner dust with a dry, lint-free soft cloth and dispose of it according to local regulations.

After you have just used the machine, some internal parts of the machine will be extremely hot. To prevent injury, when you open the top or back cover (back output tray) of the machine, DO NOT touch the shaded parts shown in the illustration.

If you need to replace the plug fuse, fit a fuse that is approved by ASTA to BS1362 with the same rating as the original fuse. Always replace the fuse cover. Never use a plug that does not have a cover. If in any doubt, call a qualified electrician.

Blue: Neutral
