WARNING!
To avoid personal injury or equipment damage, only qualified personnel should
perform the procedures in this manual.
NOTE
Be sure that the relay is hard-wired to earth ground with no smaller than 12 AWG
copper wire attached to the ground terminal on the rear of the unit case. When
the relay is configured in a system with other devices, it is recommended to use a
separate lead to the ground bus from each unit.

SECTION 1 • GENERAL INFORMATION
INTRODUCTION
The BE1-64F Ground F au lt Re lay d et ects and an nunciates ground fa ults in the normally un groun ded field
circuit of a synchronous ma chine. A short-circuit in a s ynchronous mac hine’s f ield can ofte n be prev ented
by detecting and removing a ground fault before a second ground fault results in serious damage.
BE1-64F relays are compa tible with continuous field voltages up to 600 Vdc and forcing voltages up to
750 Vdc for one minut e. During rever se excitatio n (negative forc ing), BE1-6 4F relays will w ithstand up to
1,200 Vdc for one minute.
NOTE
To ensure protection again st field grounds, the rotor iron must be gro unded. Do
not rely on a ground path through the rotor bearings. Grounding must not be
installed where it bypasses the bearing insulation that prevents shaft currents.
Rotor grounding recommendations for a machine should be obtained from the
machine manufacturer.
Two sets of relay outputs and front pan el indicators are prov ided for fault annunci ation and tripping duty.
One set of output contacts, one front panel indicator, and a latching target indicator annunciate the
detection of a ground fault in the f ield wi nding. A secon d set of out put c ontacts and a fr ont pane l indica tor
annunciate the detection of lower than normal resistance across the field winding and ground.
Replacement of an AB B 64F with the BE1-64F is si mplified beca use the pane l cutout and dr illing pattern
for the BE1-64F matches th at of the ABB 64F.

Sensitivity
Expressed as resistance from field negative lead to ground. See Figure 1-1 for the sensitivity
characteristic. In Fi gure 1-1, the dc fault v oltage is the field v oltage measured from t he negative lead to
the faulted point in the field winding.
