ENGINES.
The
Avery
Company
builds
two
styles
of
Engines
a
Topmounted
style
and
an
Undermounted
style.
There
are
a
number
of
reasons
why
we
do
this.
In
the
first
place
there
are
two
entirely
different
kindsofwork
for
which
traction
engines
are
usedBelt
Work
and
Traction
Work.
These
two
different
kindsofwork
require
that
the
power
be
delivered
at
two
different
points
on
the
engine
the
Fly
Wheel
and
the
Draw
Bar.
The
demands
on
an
engine,
when
delivering
Traction
Power
at
the
Draw
Bar
are
entirely
different
from
those
when
delivering
Belt
Power
at
the
Fly
Wheel.
But
in
spite
of
the
wide
difference
between
the
two
kindsofwork
for
which
engines
are
used
and
the
demands
which
these
two
different
kindsofwork
make
on
an
engine,
the
general
plan
followed
by
almost
all
manufacturers
has
been
to
build
over
their
light
belt
power
engines
by
using
heavier
gearing,
brackets,
etc.,
but
the
same
general
construction,
and
furnish
these
built
over,
heavier
engines
to
meet
the
demand
for
an
engine
that
is
to
be
used
for
plowing
and
other
heavy
traction
work
as
wellasfor
belt
power.
The
strains
on an
engine
when
doing
belt
work
are
not
to
be
compared
with
the
severe
pulling
and
twisting
strains
which
come
on
an
engine
in
plowing
and
heavy
hauling,
and
yet,
the
ordinary
traction
engine
called
by
the
name
of
a
heavy
hauling
engine
is
no
more
or
less
than
a
built
over,
heavier
belt
power
engine
having
a
construction
originally
designed
for
belt
power
only,
without
the
least
consideration
of
ever
using
the
engine
for
traction
purposes.
Follow
down
through
the
years
the
development
from
the
Stationary
Engine
to
the
present
Topmounted
Traction
Engine,
and
this
will
be
plainly
apparent
to
you.
These
facts
were
all
taken
into
consideration
by
the
Avery
Company,
and,
realizing
the
widely
different
and
far
greater
demands
on
an
engine
which
was
to
be
used
for
heavy
traction
work
than
on
one
which
was
to
be
used
largely
for
furnishing
belt
power,
the
Avery
Company
instead
of
building
over
their
topmounted
engine
by
using
a
heavier
construction
and
then
calling
it
by
the
name
of
a
plowing
and
heavy
hauling
engine
designed
and
built
an
engine
especially
for
heavy
traction
work
with

claim
we
make
in

to
the

of
the
Undermounted

The
importance,
for
heavy
traction
work,
of
this
change
of
construction
from
the
Top-

to
the

is
more
Durable,
More
Powerful,
and
Easier
to

WHY
THE
AVERY
DOUBLE
UNDERMOUNTED
ENGINE
IS
MORE
DURABLE
In
the
construction
of
Topmounted
Engines
the
cylinders,
gearing,
ground
wheels
and
other
parts
are
all
bolted
fast
to
the
boiler.
The
boiler
shell
serves
as
the
main
frame
work
and
must
bear
all
the
severe
pulling
and
twisting
strains
caused
by
plowing
and
heavy
traction
work.
Every
experienced
traction
engine
operator
knows
what
the
result
is,
for
these
strains
on
the
boiler
are
the
greatest
cause
of
leaky
cap-screws,
loose
brackets,
leaky
flues,
and
other
serious
difficulties.
Even
those
who
are
not
already
familiar
with
the
handling
of
engines
will
readily
see
that
there
could
be
no
other
result
when
it
is
remembered
that
practically
all
boiler
shells
are
only
J/^
or
5/16
of
an
inch
in
thickness
and
that
in
Topmounted
Engines
this
thin
shell
must
bear
all
the
strains.
It
is
entirely
different
with
the
construction
of
the
Avery
Undermounted
Engine.
The
entire
working
parts,
including
the
cylinders,
gearing,
ground
wheels,
etc.,
are
all
mounted
on
an
independent
steel
frame
work.
The
cylinders
are
boltedtothe
steel
frame
not
the
boiler.
The
gearing
and
ground
wheels
are
all
fastenedtothe
steel
frame
not
the
boiler.
The
loadisall
pulled
by
the
steel
frame
not
the
boiler.
The
boiler
is
entirely
free
from
all
pulling
strains
the
steel
frame
work
takes
them
all.
And
besides
being
relievedofall
pulling
strains,
the
strength
of
the
boiler
is
not
weakened
by
being
punctured
full
of
holes
for
attaching
brackets,
as
in
the
case
of
Topmounted
Engines.
It
is
plain
to
see
that
an
Avery
Double
Undermounted
Engine,
with
its
independent
boiler,
has
a
construction
that
will
last
much
longer
and
stand
up
in
much
better
shape
under
heavy
pulling
strains
than
Top
or
Boiler
Mounted
Engines.
This
is
a
point
to
consider
strongly.
WHY
THE
AVERY
DOUBLE
UNDERMOUNTED
ENGINE
IS
MORE
POWER
FUL
There
are
two
principal
reasons
why
an
Avery
Undermounted
Engine
is
more
powerful
on
the
draw-bar
pull.
The
first
reason
is
that
with
the
Undermounted
construction
there
is
no
rearing
or
jumping
up
of
the
front
wheels,
as
often
happens
with
Topmounted
Engines
when
pulling
heavy
loads.
The
second
reason
is
found
in
the
fact
that
the
pull
of
the
cylinders
through
the
gearing
and
back
to
the
load
is
in
a
straight
line
instead
of
down
from
the
top
of
the
boiler
at
an
angle,
as
with
Top-
mounted
Engines.
Study
into
this
point
in
the
Undermounted
construction
and
you
will
find
ittobe
an
important
reason
why
an
Avery
Undermounted
Engine
is
more
powerful
on
the
draw-bar
pull.
The
result
is
that
users
everywhere
continually
tell
us
of
the
wonderful
pulling
power
of
these
Engines
in
comparison
with
others.
As
one
Avery

He

to

this
fact.
It

a

and
we

it

a
chance,

WHY
AN
AVERY
DOUBLE
UNDERMOUNTED
ENGINE
IS
EASIER
TO
HANDLE
There
are
a
number
of
reasons
why
an
Avery
Undermounted
Engine
is
easier
to
handle.
Some
of
them
are
given
below:
All
Engine
parts
are
low
down,
and
hence,
much
handier
to

to

and
to

All
working
parts
can
be
reached
while
standing
on
the
ground.
No

over
a

The
grease
and
oil
that
drops
from
the
machinery
falls
on
the
ground
instead
ofonthe
boiler,
leaving
an
