Introduction
The MSR3000 Magnetic Stripe Reader snaps on to the bottom of
the MC3000 Series mobile computer to allow easy data capture with
the swipe of a magnetic stripe card. Simply remove the MSR3000
when not in use.
This guide describes how to install and remove the MSR3000, and
charge the MC3000 with the MSR attached.
Installing the MSR3000
Insert the mobile computer into the MSR3000, and push in the two
locking tabs.
Pull on the MSR to ensure it is securely in place.
Using the MSR
To use the MSR, ensure the MC3000 has an application which
accepts magnetic stripe data.
The MC3000 supports a terminal emulator which can access MSR
data. To use the terminal emulator, create a new session or connect
using an existing one.
To create a new terminal session to read magnetic stripe data:
1. Select Start - Programs - Communication - Terminal.
2. Double-tap the Make New Session icon.
3. In the Session name box, enter a name for the session.
4. In the Select a modem list, select the name of the modem, or
Hayes Compatible on Com1:.
5. Tap Configure.
6. From the Baud Rate: drop-down list, select 9600.
7. Under Termi nal, check both checkboxes.
8. Check the Manual Dial checkbox.
9. Tap OK.
10. Enter a telephone number. It need not be a valid number.
11. Select the Emulation tab.
12. In the Choose an emulation type list, select DEC VT-100
(default).
13. In the Code page selection list, select Auto-detect (default).
14. Check the Local echo checkbox.
15. If desired, check the Use small font by default box.
16. In the CR -> CR/LF box, check the Inbound checkbox.
Charging the MC3000
To charge the MC3000 while it is inserted in the MSR3000:
1. Insert the charging cable’s connector into the power port at the
bottom of the MSR3000.
2. Connect the other end of the charging cable to the power
supply.
3. Plug the power supply into an AC outlet.
The standard battery charges in approximately 2 1/2 hours.

Removing the MSR3000
Push in the bottom of the two locking tabs and pull the MSR3000
from the mobile computer.
17. In the Automatic Scrolling box, set the scrolling preference to
Verti cal or Horizontal.
18. Tap OK. A terminal emulation window opens.
19. Swipe the magnetic stripe card through the MSR3000, orienting
the magnetic stripe as shown. Data encoded on the magnetic
stripe displays in the mobile computer window on the MC3000.
NOTE Swipe the card in either direction, from left to right, or right to
left. For best results, gently press down on the card while
swiping to ensure contact with the bottom of the reader.
If the MC3000 is idle long enough to enter the Suspend-Resume
state, or if you cycle power to the mobile computer, you may need to
close and restart the terminal program to reinitialize the serial port.
To close terminal emulation, select File - Cancel. The session
appears as an icon in the Terminal folder. You can create a desktop
shortcut for the session, and connect by double-tapping it.

Connecting a Serial Cable
To connect a serial cable to the MC3000 while it is inserted in the
MSR3000:
1. Insert the serial cable into the 15-pin pass-through port on the
bottom of the MSR3000. See Serial Pass-Through Port Pinouts
for pinout functions.
NOTE You cannot use standard MC3000 cables with the MSR3000.

2. Connect the other end of the cable to the serial device.
3. Use the two screws provided with the MSR3000 to secure the
cable to the pass-through port.

invalidate any approval given to this device and may be dangerous.
