Before Driving Your Jetta Hybrid
1
There are a few things you should know before taking your new hybrid out for a spin
When starting your vehicle
To start your vehicle, step on the brake pedal and
press the START/STOP button in the center console (or
turn the ignition key, depending on your vehicle’s trim).
A chime will sound, the instrument needles will
sweep, and READY will appear in the instrument cluster.
Depending on the battery status, the gas engine will start
or you can drive off with electric energy alone.

Before leaving your vehicle
Your Jetta Hybrid includes a special safety feature.
Suppose your vehicle is in READY mode and the vehicle
is in Park or Neutral:
will sound. That’s because the electric motor is so silent,
you may not be aware that the vehicle is operable.

Energy Flow Diagram
3
“Energy flow” refers to the direction that energy is moving
through your vehicle’s drivetrain. While driving, diagrams
in your multifunction and touchscreen displays will show
one of five “energy modes,” depending on the direction
of the energy flow.
Stationary vehicle mode: No energy flow.
Charge mode: From wheels to battery.
Electric motor mode: From battery to wheels.
Engine mode:From gas engine to wheels (and to battery,
depending on speed and battery charge level).
Boost mode: From combustion engine and battery to wheels.
Important Safety Instructions and Warnings, which you must read, are listed on the last panel under HYBRID DRIVE.
Energy flow diagram
Using the multifunction display
Press the button on the right side of the
steering wheel repeatedly until you see the energy
flow diagram.
Three images will be displayed, representing the gas
engine, drivetrain, and battery. Arrows between the
icons will indicate the direction of the Energy flow.
To change the default Premium VIII
display
Press the SETUP hard key, then press Veh ic l e on the touchscreen.
Using the touchscreen
A color-coding system will show you the direction of
energy flow through the drivetrain.
Press the CAR hard key. The screen will default to the
“Energy flow” option. Different modes will display the
energy flow to the wheels.

Tips for Fuel-Efficient Driving
Here are a few hints to help you receive the best mileage* out of your Jetta Hybrid
5
Overall power usage: Keep an eye on the power meter
gauge, and try to drive within the 30 percent power range
(blue ECO range).
Starting from stop: Shift into Drive, remove your foot from
the brake pedal, and slowly press the accelerator. Quick
acceleration can reduce fuel economy by up to 33 percent
on the highway and 5 percent in the city.
Everyday driving: Refrain from heavy acceleration or
braking abruptly. Avoid idling whenever possible.
Charging the battery: Brake early and steadily with short
pedal movements. Let the vehicle coast to a stop.

Driving More Efficiently: Drive Sensibly, www.fueleconomy.gov
Driving with the Gasoline Engine
Your Jetta Hybrid will use the
gasoline engine alone when:
Accelerating to or driving at higher speeds.**
The battery charge level is low.
The gasoline engine will also
automatically switch on when:
Driving on highways and expressways:Coast as
often as possible when conditions allow. When driving
at higher speeds, increased wind resistance reduces
fuel economy.
Cold weather and frequent short trips: The engine
1
does not operate efficiently until it is warmed up.
Differences in terrain: Hilly, mountainous, or unpaved
roads reduce fuel economy.
o
NOTE: When using the AC, set the temperature to 72
AUTO button for greater fuel efficiency.
F and press the
Boost mode
Driving under both gasoline and electric power.
Your Jetta Hybrid will use the gasoline engine and
electric motor at the same time when the accelerator
is pressed down completely. This uses a large amount
of energy.**
**Always obey speed and traffic laws.
The AC system requires a high amount of power.
The engine temperature is cold.
More braking power is needed (using the brake booster).

Hybrid Power Operation
7
Electric or gasoline power, or both?
Your Jetta Hybrid adapts to your driving needs by
seamlessly switching its power source.
Driving with the electric motor
Depending on the battery charge level, your Jetta
Hybrid will operate solely under electric power when:

the Driving in E-MODE video.
Standard text and data rates apply.
Recharging the battery
Your Jetta Hybrid will turn off the gasoline engine
and charge the battery when:
N>0BC8=6
NA0:8=6
NA8E8=63>F=78;;
E-MODE is available under these
conditions:
You are driving under 42 mph.
Driving with E-MODE
In extended electro-mode drive (E-MODE), the electric
motor is used as much as possible.
While the car is in “Drive,” push the E-MODE button in
the center console.
Your Jetta Hybrid will be able to use the electric motor
longer before switching to the gas engine.
The “E-MODE” icon will appear on the multifunction
display, indicating that E-MODE is active.

The transmission is not in Sport (S) or Tiptronic
The hybrid battery is adequately charged.
If you accelerate too heavily or the battery falls below
a certain charge level, the icon will become smaller,
indicating that E-MODE is in standby. After slowing
your speed below 42 mph (or allowing the battery to
charge), push the E-MODE button again to activate.

Digital E-Power Meter
To stay in electric mode, keep an eye on the digital E- Power meter in your
multifunction display.
As you accelerate under electric power, you will see the horizontal gauge move
closer to the E-Max setting.
When the gauge reaches E-Max, the electric motor is operating at full power.
The gas engine will then activate to provide more power.
9
To help increase fuel efficiency*, keep the gauge under E- Max to stay in
electric mode.
*See back cover for mpg information.
Analog Power Meter
The analog power meter needle on the left gauge
in the instrument cluster indicates your vehicle’s
power status.
As you drive, the needle will point to different areas
of the color-coded dial.
Numbers on the power meter show the percentage
of the vehicle’s power currently in use.

The green area (while coasting or braking) — the
battery is charging. Note that the vehicle does not
charge at OFF or while completely stopped.
The blue area (economic driving) — the vehicle is using
either the electric motor or the gas engine, depending on
the battery’s charge level.
The white area (acceleration or driving at high
speeds**) — the vehicle is powered by the gas engine.
