HDD Handling

HDD Handling Precautions

Precautions
This unit is equipped with a hard disk drive (called “HDD” below). An HDD is a delicate and sensitive data storage device that can be damaged by shocks, vibrations, static electricity, high temperatures, high humidity, and noise, resulting in damage to data in the HDD or failure of the HDD to record properly. Read the following precautions carefully before using the unit, and handle the unit with care.
Protect from excessive shock and vibrations
Exposure to excessive shock or vibrations can damage the HDD and destroy data stored in the HDD.
• Although the HDD in this unit is protected by shock absorbing material, it can still be damaged by exposure to excessive shocks. Be sure store the unit in a shock-resistant container when you detach and transport it. When handling the unit, be careful not to drop it or throw it.
• When you place the unit on a desk or other surface, place it so that it rests stably on the feet at all four corners, in a location where it is in no danger of tipping over or falling off. Data in the HDD may be damaged if the unit tips over or falls off the desk. If you think the unit may have been subjected to excessive shock, check to be sure that it is operating properly before using it.
• Do not place the unit near equipment that generates vibrations.
Do not use in areas of low atmospheric pressure
Do not use the HDD in areas of low atmospheric pressure (areas 3,000 m (9,843 feet) or more above sea level). Doing so can damage the unit, destroy data, or result in failure to record properly. Do not use the unit at elevations of 3,000 m (9,843 feet) or more above sea level or in environments where the atmospheric pressure is 0.7 atm or lower.
Do not use in high-noise environments
When the unit is used in an environment subject to loud noise, the HDD may fail to record properly due to vibration or shock.
Power off before disconnecting battery pack or AC adaptor
Do not remove the battery pack or disconnect the AC adaptor during recording or playback. Inadvertent removal can destroy data in the HDD. Before removing the battery pack or disconnecting the AC adaptor, check to be sure that the unit is powered off (the POWER indicator is off).
Use within specified temperature and humidity ranges
Store and use the unit only in locations where the temperature and humidity are within the specified storage and operating ranges. The HDD may fail to record properly in environments where the temperature is too high or too low, and use in such environments may damage the unit. The unit is equipped with a sensor to measure the ambient temperature and may stop operating when the temperature is too low or too high. The indicators allow you to check the temperature detected by the unit. If the unit stops operating because the detected temperature is out of the operating range, wait until the temperature returns to the operating range before using the unit again.
HDD Handling Precautions
10
Save video data to archive media
To guard against inadvertent data loss, regular saving of video data to other archive media is recommended.

Outline

Outline
Destroy or erase data before disposal
Note that data in the HDD may not be completely erased when the HDD is formatted. We recommend using commercially available data erasure software to completely erase all data on the HDD before selling or giving the unit to someone else. If you plan to dispose of the unit, physical destruction is recommended. You can make it very difficult to recover previously recorded data by physically destroying the HDD.

Package Configuration

The following accessories are supplied with the Sony PXU-MS240 Mobile Storage Unit. Be sure to confirm the contents of the package before use.
• PXU-HC240 HDD Cartridge (1)
• USB cable (1)
• PHU connection cable (1.2 m (3 ft 11 in)) (1)
• AC-NB12A AC Adapter (1)
• Power cord (1)
•CD-ROM (1)
• Operating Instructions (1)
• Warranty book (1)

Features

The PXU-MS240 is a mobile storage unit that allows you to transfer and store SxS memory card data recorded with an XDCAM EX series camcorder onto a removable 240 GB HDD-cartridge. The ability to copy SxS memory card data onto the HDD without the use of a computer is convenient for temporarily storing data while recording on location. The PXUMS240 also uses the same battery pack as the camcorder. In addition USB 2.0, the unit is also equipped with eSATA interface for transferring data from SxS memory cards and the HDD cartridge, allowing highspeed transfer to computers for data editing.

Large 240 GB storage capacity while on location
The supplied HDD cartridge is inserted into
Outline
a slot on the unit during use. The cartridge’s large 240 GB capacity allows storage of up to about 800 minutes of data recorded in HQ mode (about 1,040 minutes in SP mode). As the HDD cartridge is removable, you can replace it with an optional PXU-HC240 HDD Cartridge to back up even more data. The BP-U30 Battery Pack (optional) used for XDCAM EX camcorders can also be used with this unit, allowing extended use in outdoor locations. This, in combination with the large storage capacity of the HDD cartridge, prevents missed shooting opportunities while on location.
Fast backup of SxS memory card data
• Copy function By inserting an SxS memory card removed from an XDCAM EX camcorder into the card slot on this unit, and simply pressing the COPY button, you can copy the entire content of the card’s recorded data onto the HDD cartridge. The process of backing up data is easier than with a computer. The maximum rate of data transfer from an SxS memory card to the HDD cartridge is approx. 600 Mbps. You can copy the content of a 32 GB SxS memory card that is filled to capacity (about 100 minutes of data in HQ mode) in about 10 minutes.
• Verify function Each time data is written to the HDD while you copy data from an SxS memory card to the HDD cartridge, this function checks whether write errors have occurred. If a write error occurs during a copy operation, the operation is stopped. By verifying that data has been
backed up properly, you can safely reuse the SxS memory card.
• Playback on XDCAM EX camcorders, recorders, and other devices By connecting the supplied PHU connection cable to the USB connector on the unit and the card slot on a camcorder, you can preview clips stored on the unit on the LCD screen of the camcorder.
1) Direct recording of video from the XDCAM EX camcorder to this unit or HDD cartridge is not supported.
1)
Use as high-speed read/write adaptor
By connecting the unit to a video editing computer via eSATA interface, you can transfer 240 GB of data to the computer in about 80 minutes, or about 1/3 the time it would take via USB 2.0 connection.
2)
You can also use the USB cable to connect the HDD cartridge directly to the computer, without the main unit of the mobile storage
3)
unit.
2) The transfer time may vary depending on your computer system and other conditions.
3) When using the HDD cartridge as a standalone device, be sure to use the AC adaptor to supply power.
Drop-shock protection for HDD
The unit is equipped with a 3G (3-axis acceleration) sensor that prevents damage to the HDD by automatically retracting the recording heads of the inserted HDD cartridge when acceleration rises above a certain level. The HDD cartridge also features a drop-shock protection system that uses a newly developed shock absorbing material to protect the hard
4)
disk.
4) The shock protection functions do not guarantee proper functioning and protection from damage.
