The NEC Versa LitePad™ Tablet PC User’s Guide gives you the in form a tion you n ee d to maximize the us e of your NEC Ve rsa L iteP a d tablet PC. Read this guide to familiarize yourself with th e tablet PC and its featur es. For specific informa tion, see:

Before You Begin
Prolonged or improper use of a computer wor kstation may pose a risk of serious injury. To reduce your r isk of injury, set up and use your computer in the m anner described in Appendix A, Setting Up a Healthy Work Environment.
After compl eting the steps in the quick setup car d th at comes with your tablet PC, your NEC Ver sa LitePad tablet PC is ready to go! To get started, do the following:

About Your Tablet PC
The NEC Versa LitePad™ tablet PC is a very thin light-weight tablet PC designed for mobility and versatility. This tablet PC can go anywh ere you go. Us e i t like a pen an d p a d of pa per. Write, sketch , an d view material dir e c tly on t he screen. Conn ec t the keyboa rd an d mouse a n d use your t ablet PC as a convention al full- featured PC.
With your tablet PC, access office networks and e-mails at anytime, from any location through wireless LAN. With both LAN and wireless LAN cap abilit ies, you can roam while staying conn ect ed to th e enterprise LAN. You can u s e the NEC Ver s a LitePa d ta bl et PC to view the same material as other users, in real-time in r emote locations, and you can discus s and edit documents.
The NEC Versa LitePad comes wi th th e p ower and conn ectivity of a full-featured PC. This tablet PC features a powerful ultra low voltage (ULV) Mobile Intel
®
Pentium® III Processor-M, running at 933 MHz or high e r. You r tablet P C provides a wid e choice of ports an d co nnec tivity, suc h as a C ompactFlash™ Card slot, three USB ports, CRT port, LAN port, and wireless LAN.
Your tablet PC comes with 256 MB of system memory and is easily upgradeable to 512 MB of memory. You have virtually unlimited stora ge ca pacity with th e 20-GB, or higher, 1 . 8-inch, 5-mm hard drive and ext er nal USB opti cal drives, su ch as the stand ar d CD-ROM an d optional CD-R/CD-RW drives.
In addition, the Versa LitePad tablet PC comes with the Microsoft
®
Windows
®
XP Tablet PC Edition operating system prein stalled and
ready to use. Battery life is an important consideration in the design of your system.
The Versa Lit ePad tabl et PC uses the Advan ced Configuration Power Int erface (A C P I ) for s aving en ergy and an easy to replace lon g-life battery pack for long battery operation.

Wireless LAN Switch — Use this switch to turn on or turn off the integrat ed wireles s LA N d evi ce. The wireless LAN d evice in your tablet PC is a module installed in the mini-PCI slot at the back of the tablet. To maximize battery life, slide the Wir eless LAN switch to OFF wh en you are n ot using the wireless LAN.
System Control Buttons — Use t hese but tons to con trol system function s such as chan ging the screen dis p lay from portrait to landscape or landscape to portrait viewing, simultaneous viewing of the tablet LCD and an optiona l VGA monitor, an d logging in your security password. System control button s include Rotate Screen, Esc, Fn, and Secur ity, buttons.
Button combinations provide multiple functions. You can change and s elect button funct ions through the operating system . See “Tablet Controls” in this ch apter for information about each button.
Key Buttons — Use these button s lik e keyboar d keys for navigation and for application shortcuts. Button combinations pr ovide mult ip le functions. Y ou can chang e an d select button function s through the opera ting system .

Status LEDs — K eep informed about the curr en t op eratin g s tatus of your tablet P C with these LE D s . Status LEDs include the Power LED, Batter y LED, HDD LED, and Wirel ess LAN LED. See “Status LEDs” in this chapt er for a descripti on of ea ch LED.
Power Switch — Power the tablet PC on and off with th is switch. You can use the Power switch to save power and optimize battery power when the tablet PC is powered on.
When power is on, slide the Power switch to suspend and resume tablet PC activity. See “Windows Power Management” in Chapter 4 for information about managing system power resources.
Note If you are unable to power off t he system, use t he power
override. Slide the Power switch and hold it in place for approximately 4 to 5 seconds until the system powers off.

LCD Panel with Protective Cover — View material and write direct ly on the LCD panel with you r ta blet pen. The LCD pa nel uses a 10.4-inch XGA TFT panel for high -r esolut ion, sharp, effect ive visu als. A pr otective coating on the LC D panel provides a durable surface for pen input. You can adjust LCD brightness in Windows XP (see “Startup” in Chapter 2).
Built-in Microphone — Record monophon ic sound dir ectly into your tablet PC.
Battery Pack— Keep the battery pack in s talled and charged to run your t ablet PC anywhere away from a p ower s ou rce. Charge the batt ery before use (see Ch apter 2). Then keep the batt er y charged and r eady for use. Batter y r emoval and r ep lacement is eas y (see Chapter 2).

To customize a button or button com bi nation, use Tablet and Pen Settings in Windows (double tap or double click the Tablet and Pen Se ttin gs icon in th e system tra y or from the Sta rt button, go to Con trol Panel, Printers and Other Hardware, Tablet and Pen Settings, and select Tabl et Buttons).

Wireless LAN An tenna — Pivot the wireless LAN an tenna awa y from the tablet to adjust commun ication with your LAN.
Kensington® Lock Slot — Attach a Kensington security lock or other compatible lock to this slot to secure the tablet PC from theft.
VGA Port — Use this 15-pin port to attach an external mon itor to your PC tablet. With an external monitor at tached, us e the Fn and Rotate Screen buttons to toggle between LCD and Simultan eous LCD/CRT vid e o modes (see the table “Tablet PC Switches and Button s” in this chapt er).
LAN Port — Use thi s port to connect th e syst em to a loca l area network (LAN).
Power Port — Attach the AC power adapter that comes with your system to this port. Plug the AC adapter power cable in t o the AC adapter and into an AC power source.
The AC power adapter uses a stan dard 115-Vac or 230-Vac gr ounded power s ource. K eep the system conn ected to the AC power adapt er an d an A C power s ou rce whenever p ossible to keep the ba ttery pack and internal CMOS batter y ch arged.

Headphone Jack — Lets you plug in stereo headphones. Plugging in h ead phones disables the built-in system speak er.
Microphon e In Jack— Allows you t o connect an extern al microphone for m onophonic recording or am plification through the unit.

Cable Connections
To run your tablet PC on AC power and to charge th e installed battery, connect the AC adapter .
To prevent data loss, fully charge the battery pack before running the tablet PC on battery power. See the following section, “Connecti ng the AC Adapt er,” to charg e the battery.
To use your tablet P C as a full-feat u red PC, connect th e AC ad apter, USB keyboard, mouse, an d C D- ROM drive tha t com e with th e s ystem . See th e following sections for connection information.
Connecting the AC Adapter
Conn ect the AC ad apter and p ower cabl e th at come with your tabl et PC to run your system when an AC outlet is available.
Note Keep the AC adapter connected whenever possible. When
connected, the AC adapter charges the batter y pack, whether the tablet PC is powered on or off.

Connecting the AC adapter
Do not attem pt to disassemble the AC adapter. The AC adapter has no user -replaceable or serviceable parts inside. Danger ous voltage in the AC adapter can cause serious personal injury or death. The AC adapter is intended f or use with a computer and must mee t EN609050 stan dard s.
Do not co ver or place objects on the AC adapter. Keeping the adapt er clear of objects lets the adapter cool properly during use.
Only use the AC adapt er that comes with your NEC Versa LitePad tablet PC. Although other adapt ers look similar, using them can damage your system.

Connecting the USB Keyboard and Mouse

NEC Solutions America recommends that you always operate your system on AC power when using an external device such as a CD-ROM drive.
Startup
See th e Quick Setup card that comes with your NEC Versa LitePad tablet PC to power on the system for the fir st time. The first time you power on the system , the Win d ows operating system s etup requ ires th e connection of a keyboard and mouse to complete th e setup.
To power on the tablet PC, slide the power switch. The power LED ligh ts green to indicate system po wer is on. Aft er a short d elay, Windows starts up an d dis p lays the Windows desk t op .

Use a light touch on th e tabl et screen.
Set up the NEC Ver s a LitePa d ta bl et PC with the tablet s creen, ke yboard, and mouse a t a c omfor table heigh t . When using the ke yboard, keep your forearm s parallel to the floor. Your wrist s shoul d be relax e d and st raight.
While using the keyboard, mouse, and pen, k eep your shoulders and arms as relaxed as possib le.
Take regular breaks from the tablet PC to rest your e yes. Perform stretch ing exercises to relax your fingers, hands, wrists, forearms, and shoulders.

Your tablet PC supports handwriting recognition. When you use a tablet pen to write directly on the screen and create digital ink, your tablet PC can translate your handwriting into keyboard-style text.

The button on th e side of th e pen lets you operate the pen as a mouse with a right click. You can disable/enable this action in the Windows operating s ystem.

Using the Pens
The slim pen comes s tored in th e tablet PC p en holder. To use the sl im pen, pull it out from its holder. When you are not using the pen, store it in th e tablet PC holder so it’s always there for you to use.

You can set pen actions and pen buttons in Windows. Double tap the Tablet and Pe n Set tings ic on in the Windows syste m tray.

Select the Pen Options menu to set pen action s to work as a mouse and to set the pen button to righ t click.
Replacing Clip Pen Tips
Five tips and a tip grip ring come with the clip pen (9 mm). When you notice pen performance degrading, replace the pen tip as follows.
1. Using the tip gri p ring, pres s the ring t o grip the pen tip in the ring
opening. Pu ll the tip out of the pen .
2. Insert the new pen tip. The flat end of th e tip goes into the pen.

Battery Operation
Your NEC Versa LitePad ta bl et PC comes with a rechargea ble 4-cell lithium ion (Li-Ion) battery pack alr eady installed. The battery pack pr ovi d es the main p ower s ou rce when you are operating the tablet PC on battery power.
For in forma t ion about inst alling or removing t he battery, see t he section, “Replacing the Battery” later in this chapter. For information about using the battery pack, s ee the next s ection.
Note See “Windows Power Management” in Chapter 4 to fully utilize
battery power in your NEC Versa LitePad tablet PC.
Using the Battery Pack
See the table “Ta blet PC Stat us LEDs” in Chapter 1 for a description of the Power and Ba ttery LED status. Also see “Deter mining Battery Status” and “Identifying Low Battery Status” in this chapter for battery power information.
To prevent data loss, fully charge the battery pack before running the tablet PC on battery power (see “Connecting the AC Adapter” earlier in this chapter).
To prevent accident al bat tery ignition o r
explosion, adhere to the f ollowing:
Keep th e battery away from extrem e heat.
Keep metal objects away from the batt ery connectors to prevent a short circuit.
Always run the tablet PC with a battery installed.
Make sure the battery i s properly installed in the battery bay.

Keep the following in mind when using the battery pack.
Use only the battery desi gned for your NEC Versa LiteP ad tablet PC. Mixing oth er manufacturers’ batteries, or using a combination of very old and new batter ies can deteriorate batt ery and eq uip ment performance.
Turn of f po w er to the s ystem after use. Keeping system p o w er on can degrade battery per formance and shorten battery life.
Clean the battery connector s wi th a dry cloth when they get dirty.
Keep the batt er y out of th e r each of chil dren.
Determining Battery Status
Your ta blet P C provi des t ools t o help you ke ep trac k of th e battery’s power level. If your system is configured to display the Power icon on the taskbar , the following ta s k bar icons appear:
An electrical plug ap p ears when the system is connected to an AC power source.
A battery icon always app ears when the system is not connected to an AC p ower s ource.
To show the Power icon on th e taskbar wh en con nected to AC power, tap the Windows St art button, select Control Panel, select P erformance and Maintenance, and select Power Opti ons. From the Power Options Prop erties wi ndow, select th e A d vanced menu and sel ect the option “Always show ic on on the t askba r.”
Use the system’s p ower met er to determ ine batt er y status. Acces s the system’s power meter in the following ways:
If the Power icon is configured to display in the taskbar, point to the Power icon to displ ay the remain ing bat tery power .
Double tap the Power icon on the taskbar to open the power meter.
Go to Start, Control Panel, select Performance and Main tenance, and select Power O p tions. Select th e P ower Meter tab. Power status displays the total battery power remaining.

Identifying Low Battery Status
When batter y power is low (8% or less), the power LED lights yellow (blinks in Standby mode). When battery power is ver y low (3% or less), the power LED lights amber (blinks in Stan dby mode). When your s ystem is in a low battery status, do one of the following:
Save your work, pow er of f th e sys tem, re move the spent battery, and r eplace it with a full y charged bat tery.
Leave the spent battery in the system and connect your N EC Versa LitePad tablet PC to the AC adapter and a wall outlet.
Returning the Battery to its Normal State
If ba ttery performance drops , for e xample, you e xperie nce sh ort er work times, try one of the following procedures to improve battery performance:
Remove and r einstall the batt ery in your NEC Versa LitePad tablet PC and fully r echarge the battery (to 100%).
Refr esh the battery using the Battery Refresh function in the BIOS Setup utility (see “Sta ndard Menu” in Chapter 3).
Extending Battery Life
While on the road, it is important to be aware of the simple things you can d o t o ex tend the life of the system’s batter y:
Keep th e brightness setting low by adjusting the screen brightn ess in the Tablet and Pen Settings menu. To adjust screen brightness, double tap the Tablet and Pen Settings icon in the Windows system tray. Tap the Di spla y tab to select Screen brightness settin g s.
You can adjust screen brightn ess for running the system on AC power and for battery power.
Run s torage devi ces, such as the USB CD - ROM d r ive, on AC power only.

The following symptoms indicate that battery life is nearing an end. Replace a battery that displays these symptoms.

Only use batteries that are designed for your NEC V ersa LitePad tablet PC. Installing anoth er manufacturer’s battery or using a combination of very old a nd new batteries can deteriorate battery and equipment performance.

Taking Precautions
To prevent accidental ba t tery ignition, rupture, or expl osion, adhere to the following pr ecautions.
There is a danger of explosion if the battery is incorrectly replaced. Replace only with the same or equivalent type r ecommended by the manufacturer. Discard used batteries according to the manufacturer’s ins tru ct ion s.
To avoid personal injury and pr operty damage, read these battery precautions on handling, charging, and disposing of Li-Ion batteries.
Keep the battery away from heat sources including direct sunlight, open fires, m i crowave ovens, and high-voltage containers. Temperatures over 140º F (60ºC) m ay cause damage.
Do not drop or bump the battery.
Do not disassemble the battery.
Do not solder the battery.
Do not puncture the battery.
Do not use a battery that appears dam aged or deformed, has any rust on its casing, is discolored, overheats, or emits a foul odor.
Keep the batter y dry and away f r om water.
Keep metal objects away from battery connectors. Metal objects in contact with the connectors can cause a short circuit and damage.
If the ba ttery leaks :
If the ba t ter y leaks on to skin or clot hing, wash the area immediately with clean water. Battery fluid can cause a skin rash and damage fabric.
If battery fl uid gets into eyes, DO NOT rub; rinse with clear water immediately and consult a doctor.
Take extra p recautions t o keep a leaking battery away from f ire. There is a danger of ignition or expl osion.

Immediately turn off and unplug the NEC
Versa LitePad tablet PC under the following cond itions:
The power cord is damaged or frayed.
Liquid spills on or into the NEC Vers a LitePad tablet PC.
The system is dropped or the casing is damaged.
Precautions fo r System Use
Follow these precautions when using your NEC Versa LitePad tablet PC and AC adapter.
Avoid dropp i ng or bump i ng the comp uter or the AC adapt er.
Do not stack hea vy obj ects on the tablet PC, the AC adapter, or the battery.
Avoid m ovin g t he NE C V e rsa Li tePad ta blet P C during system oper ation, especially while the hard disk, diskette drive, or other drive is being accessed.
When using the AC adapter, make sure the power source falls within the system’s compatible range of 100-240 volts and 50 or 60-Hz, AC. Never use the AC adapter if the voltage falls outside of this range. (Watch for this when tr avelin g to ot her countries .)
Turn computer power off before attaching or removing non-plug and pla y devices that are n ot warm- or hot- s wappable.
Do not push any foreign objects into the NEC Versa LitePad tablet PC bays, c onnectors, and sl ots.
Do not s et the tablet P C on top of a magnetized area. Doing so can destr oy the data on your hard di s k dri ve . (Some air line tray tables are magneti c.)
Avoid u s i ng the ta blet PC or AC adap ter for ext ended per iods in direct sunlight.

Turn computer power off before cleaning it.
Avoid ex p osing the NEC Ver sa LitePa d ta blet PC or AC ad apter t o extreme changes in temperature or humidity. If it is unavoidable, allow your tablet PC to adjust to room temperature before use.
When cleanin g the system, use a soft, clean, dry cloth. A voi d wiping the displa y surface wit h abrasive material, in cluding rough fabr ic. Do not use a cleaning solution; this may damage th e tablet PC’s case.
If the AC adapt er becom es extremel y h ot , un p lug the adapter and let it cool.
Storage Requirements
Stor e the tabl et PC and AC adap ter in an environm en t that meets the following conditions:
If the temperature of the NEC Versa LitePad tablet PC suddenly rises or falls (for example, when you move the system from a cold pl ace to a warm place) vapor condenses inside t he system. Turning on the system under this condition can damage the internal system components.
Before turning on the system, wait until the system’s internal temperat ure equal izes w ith the new enviro nment an d any internal moisture evaporates .
Maintain s torage temperat ures between -4°F and 104°F (-20°C and 40°C).
Keep the stor ag e area fr ee from vibration and magnetic fields.
Keep the system and its com p onents away from organic sol vents or corrosive gases.
Avoid leavin g th e s ystem and its components in direct sunlight or near heat sources.

Routine Cleaning
Clean or dust your system a s follows:
Never use hars h solutions, household cleaners, or spr ay cleaners that cont ain caustic materials on the NEC Versa LitePad tablet PC.
These clean ers a re usually high in alkali ni ty, which is measu r ed in pH. Using these cleaners can harm the magnesium surface.
LCD screen — Carefu lly wipe the LCD scr een with a soft cloth or a screen wipe d es igned for that pur pose. Special screen wipes are available through your local com put er dealer.

Introducing BIOS Setup
Your NEC Versa LitePad tablet P C comes wit h a har dwar e program called the BIOS Setup utility that allows you to view and set system parameters. BIOS Setup also allows you to set password features that pr ot ect your system from unauthoriz ed us e.
Use BIOS Setup to:
set th e curren t time an d date
custom ize your operating system to reflect your com p u ter har d ware
secure your system with a password
launch the Refresh Batter y ut ility an d fully dischar g e your lithi um ion battery pack.
System par ameter in formation, for example, date, time, drive, and secur ity settings, is stored in the system’s complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) memory.
Entering BIOS Setup
Connect your keyboard or use your tablet pen to run the BIO S S e tup utility. You can use some of the tablet PC buttons to access the BIOS Setup utility and to select menu options.
Access the BIOS utility at power-on. Just press the
DOWN button
when the follo wing prom p t ap pears.

Wh en you press the DOWN button to enter BIOS Setup, the system interrupts the Power-On Self-Test (POST) and displays the Standard CMOS Setup m enu. Password Protection
Your NEC Versa LitePad tablet P C supports a pas s word for system security. Keep in mind that you must set the supervisor password bef ore the BI O S Setu p utility a llows you t o set a user pas s w or d.
Once you s et a s uper visor pas s word, you must e nter it befor e you can enter BIOS Setup.
To establish password protection for entering the BIOS Setup utility, you must set the super visor password before setting a user password.
To enter a password, select Set Sup ervisor Password, press
Enter,
enter the pass word, re- en ter th e pa s s wor d to confir m it, and pr es s any key to continue. Repeat the procedure to set th e User password.
Note For security, use different passwords f or Supervisor and User
passwords.

Set a Windows password in Control Panel, Password Pr operties, Change Passwords.

Hard Disk Drive Passwords
Your NEC Versa LitePad tablet PC allows you to establish password protection for the internal hard disk dri ve. Hard disk dri ve (HDD) pass w ord protection r estricts access to the drive, only if the drive is re moved from your N EC Versa L itePad ta blet P C and insta ll e d in an oth er s ys tem . You a re not prompted to enter your hard disk drive passwords while the drive r emains in your current system.
The HDD p asswor d s ar e written to the system BIO S and to the hard disk dr ive to ens ure that th e pa s s word pr ot ection travels wit h the drive when moved from s ystem to system.
Establishing Hard Disk Drive Passwords
To es tablish pas s word protect ion for your syst e m’s ha rd disk drive you must establish a master password, establish a user password, an d enable the establish ed passwords for the internal HDD. Follow th ese steps to establish HDD passwords and to enable HDD password protection.
If you set th e m aster and user passwor d on a hard drive, password security can never be disabled. Passwords can be changed. If the master passwor d is forgotten and t he drive is installed in another syste m, you cannot acce ss the data on the hard drive.
If the hard drive is installed in another NEC Versa system with hard disk drive security enabled, the password must be entered to allow access to the h ard drive. If this NEC Ver sa system does not support hard
disk drive security, you cannot access the data on the har d drive.
1. Enter th e BI OS s etup, highlight and select the Secur ity men u.
2. Select Set HDDs Security Password and press Enter.

Using Hard Disk Dr ive Password Protection
To facilitate the transfer of one or more HDDs between systems, establish a single master password (and store the password in a secure place). For g etting your master password r es u lts in the inability to access t he data on your hard drive. Establish different user pa s s words to limit access to specific systems.
If you set th e m aster and user passwor d on a hard drive, password security can never be disabled. Passwords can be changed. If the master passwor d is forgotten and t he drive is installed in another syste m, you cannot acce ss the data on the hard drive.
If the hard drive is installed in another NEC Versa system with hard disk drive security enabled, the password must be entered to allow access to the h ard drive. If this NEC Ver sa system does not support hard disk drive security, you cannot access the data on the har d drive.
With hard di s k dri ve securi ty enabled on the original NE C Ver s a system, th e system boots nor ma lly.

If the hard drive is installed in another NEC Versa system with security enabled, you must enter the master password to access th e hard disk drive. If the hard drive is installed in anoth er NEC Versa system with securit y di sabled, the system bo ot s with no password required.
Moving the Hard Disk Drive
Wh en a passwor d protect e d HDD i s moved from it s orig inal s ystem and in s talled in an ot her system , error messag es ap p ear indicating th at the drive is locked. Next, the Securit y Setu p screen appears requi ring the user to en ter the master password to unlock the drive. Highlight the HDD password l ine and enter the master password when prompted.
To tak e a dvan t age of HDD pa s s word protect ion in a nother system , the system must be equipped with the same HDD password protection featu re. To determin e if that system has HDD password, check the Security Setu p in the BIO S S etup to see i f there ar e pr ovis ion s for establishing HDD passwords.
Boot Menu
Th e Boot De vice S e tup menu allows you t o define the boot devices an d boot order of sys tem devic es.

Discar d Chang es and Exit — Exits the BIOS Setup utility without savin g Setu p data . The E S C key or button can be u s e d for t his operation.
Discar d Chang es — Discards changes don e so fa r to any of the setup questions. The F7 key can be used for this operation..
Load Optimal Defaults — Loads the defa u lt valu es for all the setu p options. You can use F9 for this operation.
Updating the BIOS
The BIO S i s cod e tran smitted onto your system’s microprocessor, or central processing unit (CP U). As indicated in th is chapter, you use the BIOS Set up utility to configure your syst em’s software and hardware features. Only use the BIOS Update Diskette for your specific model to update your NEC Versa LitePad tablet PC BIOS.
Note You only need to update the BIOS if NEC makes significant
improvements or fixes to the current system BIOS. Your authorized NEC Solutions America dealer or support representative can help you determine this.
To update the system BIOS you m ust:
Obtain the BIOS Upd ate
Prepare th e BIO S Update D iskette
Perform the BIOS Update.

Preparing the BIOS Update Diskette
Before using the BIOS updat e diskette, you must make the diskette BIOS fla s h ready. Re f er to the readme.txt fil e on th e di s k ette befor e using the diskette.
Follow these instruction s to prepare the BIOS Update Diskette.
Note Preparing the BIOS Update Diskette makes the diskette
bootable. This pr ocedure requires a system that has the MS-DOS® operating system available. Mi crosoft Windows XP does not have an MS-DOS operation. If a boot able disk is required, contact Support Services at NEC Solutions America (see Chapter 9).
1. Scan your hard drive for any computer viruses.
2. Un lock the write protect notch on the disk ette, if n ecess ary.
3. Con nect the USB disk ette drive and insert the di sk ette into the
diskette drive.
4. Type a:\install (wh ere a: is the diskette drive) at the DOS prompt
and fol l ow the on - s cr een instru ction s. Install.bat c opies t he DO S system files from your hard drive ont o
the BIOS Update Diskette to make it BIOS fla sh ready. The system pr om p ts you when the process i s com p lete.
5. Scan the BIOS Upda te Diskette for computer viruses.
The d iskette is ready for use.

Performing the BIOS Update
Make the foll owing preparations before performing the BIOS update. Before you begin, be sure to:
Conn ect the tablet PC to AC p ower and power on the comp ut er .
Remove any bootable CDs fr om any installed USB optical drive.
Enter BIOS Setu p with the DOWN butt on.
Ch eck Boot order on the Boot menu to en s ure that th e USB di s kette drive boots before the IDE ha rd dr ive.
Write down wh at you’ve done to customize your BIOS settings.

Once you have prepar ed the system for a BIOS update, perform th e followin g steps:
1. Insert the BIOS Update diskette into the diskette drive.

Checking/Changing Switch Settings
The NEC Versa LitePad tablet PC has a four-position dip switch on the bottom of the tablet PC. Switches are identified as follows:
Switch 1 — Password Override switch The default setting is “OFF.” If you for get the password you set in the BIO S S etup utility and you cannot access BIOS Setup or Windows, change the setting to “ON” and your current password is era s ed .
Note Clearing the password set in the BIOS Setup utility does not
clear your Windows password.
Switch 2 — Log o Select s witch The default setting is “OFF” for the U.S. logo.
Switch 3 — Cri sis Rec overy Boot fr om Boot Block switch The default setting is “OFF” for a Normal boot. The “ON” setting is for a Bo ot bloc k.

If you set a supervisor or user password in the BIOS Setup utility and then forgot the password , you can clear it.
Use the following pr oced u re to clea r the password.
Before handling any internal components, discharge static electricity fr om yourself by touching a nearby unpainted metal surface.
1. Po wer off th e system, disconnect AC power, and disconnect an y
peripheral devices.
2. T urn over th e tablet PC.
3. Locate the scr ew securing the memory bay cover to th e bottom of
the tablet PC. Remove the screw and lift off the memory bay cover.

5. Using a fine-tipped object, lift the cover and change swi t ch 1 to
“ON” to enable a password overr ide. Th is setting erases your current pa s s wor d s et in the BIOS Setup utility.
Never use a pencil to change switch se ttings . Residue from the pencil can dam age the system.
Leave the other switches at their default settings (OFF). Changing the settings can cause the system to malfunction.
6. Repl ace the memor y modu le cover and scr ew, plug in th e AC
adapter, and power on th e system.
7. At the startup scr een , press th e D OWN bu tton to ent er the BIOS
Setup utility. Select th e Security menu and check that switch sett ing procedu re ha s cl eared the password .
8. Po wer off th e s ystem and dis con nect AC p ower . Turn over the
tablet PC.
9. Turn over the ta blet PC an d remove th e me mor y bay cover.
10. Set switch 1 back to “OFF” (see the previous fi g ure) .

Windows Power Manage ment
Your NEC Ver sa LitePad tablet PC manages its power resources using the Advanced C onfigurati on and Power Interfa ce ( A C P I ) while the system is powered on using AC or battery (DC) power. ACPI enables the operating system t o manag e the power gi ven to each attached devic e and to tur n off a device wh en not in us e.
Take advantage of the opportunity to manage power on your system to:
Minimize battery drain.
Save time. When you return from that urgent call or meeting, you don’t ha ve to reboot, just press the power button to resume system operation.
Windows Power Options Properties
ACPI power management settings are controlled through Windows Power Options Proper ties.

Hibernate
Use the Hibern ate window t o enable hibernate support , see the amoun t of free d isk spa ce, and th e amoun t of disk space req uired to hibernate. When your system h ibernates, it p erform s a save-to-d i s k . Your current working environment is saved to the hard disk. Use the power button to resume from hibernation. Your system returns to its pr evious state.
Note Hibernate is enabl ed by default in Windows.

NEC Customiz e Utility
The NEC Customize utility gives you the option to launch the NEC Versa LitePad Tablet PC Application and Driver CD. Use this option to install a variety of soft ware applications, drivers, and utilities. This utility also pr ovides the option for installin g the NEC wallpaper .
NEC Customize Ut ility Sc reen
The NEC Customize utility screen displays the following option s:
Application and Driver CD — launches the NEC Versa Lit ePa d Tablet PC Appli cation and Driver CD (see “Application and Dr iver CD” in this chapter).

Using the NEC Customize Utility
Follow these steps to use the NEC Customize utility.
1. Double click the NEC Customize icon.

4. If necessary, click Exit to close th e N EC Customize dial og box.
Application and Driver CD
A variety of softwa re appl icat ion s, dri ve rs, a nd uti lities are pr ovided on the Application and Driver (A&D) CD that ships with your NEC Versa LitePad tablet PC. Some of the drivers are already installed as part of your oper a ting system environment.
The additional software on th e A&D CD lets you take full advantage of your system resour ces.

Use the Application and Driver CD to install the software of your choice. Some software applications install their own desktop icon allowing quick access t o the application. You can also access s om e applications through the Start, Programs menu.
Launching the A&D CD
Follow these procedures to launch the Application and Driver CD using the NEC Cus tomize u tility.
Note The NEC Customize utility requires the connecti on of a
CD-ROM drive.
1. Insert the Application and Dr iver CD into the CD-ROM drive.
2. Double click the NEC Customize icon.
3. Select Application and Driver CD. The Application and Driver

Product Recovery CD
The Product Recovery CD contains the NEC Product Recovery ut ility that allows you to r estore your system to its initial installation state.
If you deter m ine that you ne ed to r e s tor e you r sys tem to its i nit i al installa ti on state, use the instru ctions th at fol low.
Note Only use the Product Recovery utility to restore your system to
its initial installation state as a last resort. Check the problem checklist in Chapter 8 f or information about solving pr oblems before using the CD. The Product Recovery utility provides options that either remove or replace exi st ing files, a process that m ay result in data loss.
Before using the Product Recovery CD, enter the BIOS Setup utility, record any customized settings, and restore the BIOS default settings. Save the default settings before exiting the BIOS Setup utility.

Guidelines for Using the Product Recovery CD
Follow these guidelines when using the Product Recovery CD.
Use AC power.
Conn ect a USB keyboard or mouse.
Remove all op tional hard ware s uch as CF Car ds, USB d evices, an d monitors.
Carefully review the Pr oduct Recovery CD options in the next secti on before p roceeding.
Choose your restore option care fully to
prevent losing data and applications i nstalled on your syst em.
Product Recovery CD Options
Th e Produ c t Recovery CD and ut ility pr ovides you with F ull Di sk Drive and Partiti on Only restore opti ons. Move the cursor over each option on the NEC Product Recovery utility screen to display a desc ri ption of the option in the wind ow at the ri ght si de of the screen.
Full Disk Drive — Completely rebuilds your hard disk dr ive, destroying all exi sting da ta in the process . Select this opt ion if you wish to restore your hard disk drive to its initial installation state.
Note Use the Full Disk Driv e restore option if your hard dis k
consists of one partition (drive).
Partition Only — Lets you pr eser ve your existing hard di sk drive partition structure and allows you to format only the primary partition without affecting the extended partition(s). Partition Only formats drive C: (of a multiple partitioned drive) an d restor es drive C: to its initial installation state. To use the Partition Only option, drive C: must be equal to or greater than 1 GB. Additional par ti tions, for ex ample, drives D:, E:, etc., remain intact.
Note Use the Part ition Only restore option if your hard disk is
partitioned into two or more partitions (drives).

Exit — Exits the NEC Product Recovery utility.
Full Disk Drive Restore
If your preinstalled software becomes unusable and you cannot boot from the hard disk, use the Product Recovery utility to restore your system to its initial shippin g configuration. The Full Disk Drive restore option erases the ha rd disk completely before rein stalling th e files.
The Full Disk Drive restore option deletes all files on the har d drive and replaces them with the ori ginal factory ins ta lled files.
Only use th e Full Disk D r ive rest ore option if the preinstalled softwa re is unusable.
Use the Product Recover y utility to perform a Full Disk Drive restore as follows.
1. Check th e Product Recovery CD title and make sure that it is the
correct CD for your NEC Versa Lit ePad tablet P C an d operatin g system.
2. Pu t CD1 int o the CD-ROM dr ive tra y, close th e dr ive door, an d
re boot you r syst em .
3. Read the License Agreement s cr een that a p p ears. Use th e
keyboa rd or mou se to accept or d ecline the agreement. If you decline the agreement, the recovery utility exits.
4. In the NEC Product Recovery utility screen, choose Full Disk
Drive to restor e your hard disk drive to its original factory installed state.
Choose your restore option care fully to prevent losing data and applications i nstalled on your syst em.

5. Read the Warn ing scr een .
A warning displays indic ating that your hard di s k is abou t to be erased.
6. Sel ect Con tinue to proceed to perform a F ul l D isk Drive restore.
If you select Back, the recovery utility returns to the prior screen, which has an exit op tion. If you select Contin u e, an NEC screen loads.
7. At the NEC screen, cli ck Continu e to start th e r eco very pr ocess.
A screen with progress bars is displayed a nd indica tes the pr ogre s s of the recovery.
Do not turn off or dist urb the sy stem duri ng
th e recover y process.
At the prompt for the next CD, r emove CD1 in ser t CD2 int o the CD-ROM d rive. Select
OK to start loading CD2.

8. At the prompt, remove th e CD from the drive. Press Enter, click
Reb oot, or press
Alt-R t o reboot your system.

Partition Only Restore
If your preinstalled software on drive C: of your multiple-partition ed drive be comes un usabl e a nd you c annot boot fr om the hard disk, use the Product Recover y utility to restore your primar y partition to its initial shipping configuration.
Use the P art i t ion Onl y rest ore option on ly if your hard disk drive consists of multiple partitions and if drive C: contains the operating system and related drivers. Move all other data and applications t o other partitions ( drives) or the Partition Only restore process will erase them completely.
The Par t ition Only r estore op t ion deletes all files on drive C: and rep la c es the m with the original factory installed fi les. Onl y u s e the Partiti on Only restore option if th e prei nstall ed software on drive C: i s unusable.
Use the Product Recovery utility to perform a Partition Only r estore as follows:
1. Check th e Product Recovery CD title and make sure that it is the
