Adjustment procedure
1. Play back the Track 1 (1 kHz 0dB L+R) of the TEST DISC
(SBC429).
2. Adjust trimming resister (R205) according to AC
voltmeter readings of L ch output level and R ch output
level.
3. The output level difference of the L ch and R ch is
adjusted to less than 50mV.
If R205 is turned clockwise, the level of L ch will become
large, and if it turns to anticlockwise rotation, the level of
R ch will become large.

VSTEM ERROR
[A] VSTEM ERRORS can be broadly divided into the following three cases:
• Case I: Inside SACD Engine PWB - when the IC and MPU cannot communicate (always occur)
• Case II: Outside SACD Engine PWB - when the MASTER CLOCK is not supplied to the ENGINE or each IC (always occur)
• Case III: When the power is ON and the RESET signal is not distributed (seldom occur)

Check (CLK LINE) and (MPU communication interface) on the PWB.
The block diagram below shows how each block relates to others. Check that there is no problem with communication and
clock supply between ICs.

1. The CLOCK flows as next page on the Block Flow diagram below. Check each point.
The Q101 controls the switch and power supply of each CLOCK. Just as the main power is turned on, it switches on Q109,
Q110 and Q128 at once. It determines the timing of turning off unnecessary clocks when the three power supplies are
stabilized.
Here is an outline of how the VSTEM ERRORS are caused:
1) The capacitance of the chemical condensers (C122, C152 and C139) in the power section of Q109, Q110 and Q128 each
cannot be changed, with the power timing thrown off. Sets with a modified clock have the timing misaligned for the above
reasons. These errors are caused by the MASTER CLOCK momentarily functioning abnormally from Q101 (SYCL). After
that, the CLOCK returns to normal, so it is prone to undergo an unexplained VSTEM ERROR.
2) When Q101 will not supply CLOCK to the ENGINE, it inevitably has a VSTEM ERROR.
3) The error is attributed to the fact that the RESET signal is not distributed to the ENGINE when the power is ON or
misaligned timing (as shown on the Block Diagram). Check the flexible wire that connects CX131 and JM03.

[B] SACD Engine OPU Block
1. OPU MOTION SEQUENCE
1) Start the SLEDG MOTOR and move the OPU to the TOC area.
2) Light the laser and move the FOCUS MOTOR up and down.
3) Determine the disc type and the reflectance when the FOCUS MOTOR is moving up and down.

4) Display "CAN’T PLAY" when the disc type and the reflectance cannot be determined correctly. (This action is performed
only once if the unit has a normal OPU. If the OPU is worn out or a substandard disc is loaded, the same message is
repeatedly displayed 3 to 5 times. This is the most typical problem caused by OPU abnormalities.)
5) Start the SPIN MOTOR and TRACKING MOTOR and then PLAY subsequent to the TOC motion. (Any subsequent
functional problem is attributed to an error in determining the disc type in Process 3).

2. SIMPLE METHODS OF DETERMINING MALFUNCTIONS OF THE OPU AND CIRCUITRY
1) If a malfunction occurs to only one of the DISC and CD/SACD, it is mostly caused by an OPU abnormality.
2) Most OPU abnormalities are caused by laser degradation. In this case, the HF (VRF) OUT terminal output measures low.
3) If the laser current is high, the HF (VRF) OUT terminal also outputs a high current. High jitters, signals of the adjacent
tracks and loud noise... These can be erased by upping the R502 (100~820Ω).
4) If the laser current is low, the HF (VRF) OUT terminal outputs a low current. The HF signal cannot be detected and the
PLL and SPIN MOTOR get out of control and stop. These can be rectified by lowering the R502 (100~820Ω).
3. OBSERVATION OF THE HF
HF output voltage while playing CDs/SACDs
1) VRF: The HF from the OPU is first to be measured by the connector (CX241-10 pin) VRF. The VRF output level is not
constant, depending on wear variations of the OPU.
